Erik Oldenhof (1951)

Schermafbeelding 2019-08-19 om 13.24.13

One of the reasons why i started this blog is to introduce artists and their works to a larger audience and here is one of these artists. Erik Oldenhof has had a lng time careeer now and his abstract art leans towords Zero and more abstract painting. However his technique reminds me of Jakob Gasteiger who molds his paint after he has applied it to the canvas. This is what Oldenhof must also do when i look at his paintings. There is a growing interest in his works, but still they can be bought at fairly reasonable prices at galleries and art loan institutions and whenever you find a painting by Oldenhof put up for auction they can be outright cheap. Still this stands in no relation with the artistic values. Oldenhof his paintings have a personality of their own and will not bore for a long time to come.

www.ftn-books.com has a nice Erik Oldenhof publication available

Carel Visser…the 1975 van Abbemuseum catalogue

Schermafbeelding 2019-08-19 om 12.15.01

This is the catalogue which started it all for Carel Visser in the Netherlands. After having had his exhibition at the Art & Project gallery in 1974. Visser was considered to be one of the great talents in the dutch art scene. the result…. museum exhibitions like this first one at the van Abbemuseum in 1975

and in the following years consecutive exhibitions at the art & Project gallery, the Stedelijk Museum, Kröler Muller museum, Haags Gemeentemuseum and Museum Boymans van Beuningen. All these contributed to the fame of Carel Visser in the Netherlands resulting in many more gallery exhibitions, commissions and exhibitions abroad too. Carel Visser has become now one of the recognized leading sculptors and the catalogue which is now for sale at www.ftn-books.com is arguably one of the most important ones in the long list of publications Carel Visser has made during his career.

Leo Divendal (1947)

Schermafbeelding 2019-08-18 om 10.19.12

Leo Divendal…… Photographer, publisher, gallery owner, writer, musician, artist book maker, bookseller and antiquarian.

Why this blog on Leo Divendal, first of ll it is rare that so many talents have come together within one person and…..then there is of course the connection with the Gemeentemuseum where Divendal curated some 20 years ago, together with Willem van Zoetendaal some exhibitions in the Fotokabinetten.

The second reason is that i bought a Divendal special publication recently. Het Glazen Oog is a Divendal special from 1991 which features some of the greatest dutch photographers from last century.

This and other publications are now available at www.ftn-boooks.com

But possibly the main reason is that i noticed that Divendal and i have the same approach to art and artists and that the both of us like the same artists and have an admiration for them. Here is the link to the Leo Divendal site ( https://www.leodivendal.nl/atelier/) in which you can discover all those nice publications which many of them are also available at www.ftn-books.com

Schermafbeelding 2019-08-11 om 14.45.55

Chaim Levano was born on January 1, 1928 in Heerlen, Limburg, Netherlands. He was an actor, known for Warum Ulli sich am Weihnachtsabend umbringen wollte (2005), De zwarte meteoor (2000) and Baantjer (1995). He died on February 17, 2016 in Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands.

This in short all that i found on Levano, but there must be much more, since a very impressive publication, including a DVD on his career was published by Huis Clos. Everything is done with the utmost tastte. design by Piet Gerards, photography by Koos Breukel and a movie by Kees hin. This is a AAA production and now available at www.ftn-books.com

Joost Swarte and Vienna Moderne

Schermafbeelding 2019-08-08 om 15.29.50

Today was book market day and i went to the stalls at the local book market. I am always looking for the thin little books and this is one of the titles i found today. I went through a stack of books and there this book was. At first I thought it was a JOOST SWARTE  cover, but studying it more closely i noticed that this could not have been done by Swarte , since the book was published in 1979 and the drawing done by Rudolf Tropsch in 1901.

iI always have admired Joost Swarte for the way he set up his drawings and how he has done his research, but the drawings by Tropsch show that some 80 years earlier other artists had the same approach to their subjects. The book on Vienna Moderne is now available at www.ftn-books.com

Kiki’s Paris: Artists and Lovers, 1900-1930 (1989)

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-22 om 12.23.51

A portrait of Montparnasse in the first decades of the century, this attractive book of some 650 black-and-white photos uses, as a focal point, the artist, artist’s model, singer, dancer and actress Kiki (born Alice Ernestine Prin). Proclaimed “Queen of Montparnasse” in 1929 by the newspaper Paris-Montparnasse , she was outrageous, charming, beautiful, talented–and so is the Paris that emerges. We see the cafes–Dome, Rotonde, Coupole, etc.–where notable artists Matisse, Modigliani, Picasso, Man Ray, Stein, Leger, Cocteau, Brancusi, Soutine and hundreds of others hung out, the studios in which they worked, the parties they went to, the vacations they took and the galleries where they exhibited.

The text, deliberately understated, takes a back seat to the photos, offering introduction, explanation and anecdote. Kluver, president of Experiments in Art and Technology, and Martin, a staff member at the the same foundation, have assembled a lavish, information-packed look at the people and places of an important, exciting era in art history.

Fritz Wotruba (1907-1975)

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-22 om 11.59.45

A truly visionary artist Fritz Wotruba was. He is almost forgotten, but deserves to be recognized as one of the great European artists who shaped modern art and combined this with great architectural designs. Wotruba is like a cubist sculptor, but his shapes consist of parts put together and seen from nearby it seems as they have no relation with each other. But from further away figures emerge.

His sculptures are magnificent, but when you once have seen his architecture you are completely sold .

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-22 om 12.04.52

This is the discipline in which he excels and is a one of a kind artist. Fritz Wotruba has had several exhibitions in the Netherland in the 50’s and the 60’s, but is after these events almost forgotten. Instead in Austria he is still one of the greatest Modern Artists. Catalogues of these events are available at www.ftn-books.com
