Anton Pieck in fashion again.

Schermafbeelding 2020-09-17 om 15.37.05

People from my generation remember the many Post and Christmas cards by Anton Pieck each family received . I even remember my parents chosing a stork with baby in his beak as a birth announcement. Pieck was huge….Piewck was popular and …Pieck stood for the most famous fairy tale park in the Netherlands…..de Efteling….

But after i few decades people got tired of the romantic scenes, populated by Dickens figures. Yes, the “DE EFTELING” attraction park was still there, but only because it had grown into a full blown entertainment park and the fairy tale forrest was almost forgotten.

But some 15 years ago , because some originals fetched excellent prices at auction, people started to notice Anton Pieck again. All because they recognized the quality of his great illustrations and drawings of town scenes and landscapes. There was of course a small  Anton Pieck Museum, but the Frans Hals Museum / de Hallen in Harlem was the first to dedicate a retrospective to Anton Pieck, the artists, in 2008.  A popular well attended exhibition which published a great catalogue together with the exhibition. ( now available at http://www.ftn-books. com) and these days i am selling Anton Pieck books all over the world and people collect and appreciate them. Anton Pieck is in fashion again.

Maddy Arkesteyn (1966-2012)

Schermafbeelding 2020-07-21 om 13.19.58

A promising career was ended much too soon because of a deadly disease which ended her life in 2012. But Maddy Arkesteyn has left us some impressive works in public collections and an excellent catalogue which was published by Centrum Beeldendende Kunst in 1994. This catalogue shows that Arkesteyn needed space for her works. These are not intimate little paintings but large installations in which she uses all materials that are nearby or at hand. Educated in Maastricht at the Academie Voor Beeldende Kunst and finishing her educations at the Ateliers ’63 in 1989-1991.

Leo Divendal (1947)

Leo Divendal…… Photographer, publisher, gallery owner, writer, musician, artist book maker, bookseller and antiquarian.

Why this blog on Leo Divendal, first of ll it is rare that so many talents have come together within one person and…..then there is of course the connection with the Gemeentemuseum where Divendal curated some 20 years ago, together with Willem van Zoetendaal some exhibitions in the Fotokabinetten.

The second reason is that i bought a Divendal special publication recently. Het Glazen Oog is a Divendal special from 1991 which features some of the greatest dutch photographers from last century.

divendal

This and other publications are now available at www.ftn-boooks.com

divendal aa

But possibly the main reason is that i noticed that Divendal and i have the same approach to art and artists and that the both of us like the same artists and have an admiration for them. Here is the link to the Leo Divendal site ( https://www.leodivendal.nl/atelier/) in which you can discover all those nice publications which many of them are also available at http://www.ftn-books.com

Joost Swarte (1947) pins.

Schermafbeelding 2019-03-26 om 14.55.26

I do not exactly know how many pins by Joost Swarte there have been published during the last 35 years or so, but i have counted 25 of which the most part can be found on Google . These pins are among the very best small collectibles there are. Most of them were published by HET RAADSEL in the early Nineties, but others were published on the occasion of an event  (Film Festival) or commissioned by a large corporation for their museum store (PTT museum). This is a world of small collectibles by Joost Swarte which has not been explored that much. The number of pins published can be overseen and prices are still fair , although rising quickly after recent auctions of these small objects.

http://www.ftn-books.com has 2 collectable Joost swarte designed pins available.

Arjanne van der Spek (1958)

Schermafbeelding 2018-11-18 om 15.08.54

Is it luck or did it had to be this way?,….. because a few months ago if finally could purchase for the FTN collection an important and i think beautiful and intriguing sculpture by Arjanne van der Spek. It must have been some 25 years or more ago that i think Gerrit Jan de Rook introduced me to Arjanne van der Spek.  It was during the exhibition she had at the Gemeentemuseum and was joining Frank van Hemert in their joint presentation. A just starting, promising sculptor, who had finished her education and studies at the Ateliers 63 just half a decade earlier. She had her first solo exhibition at the Tanya Rumpff gallery who had started her gallery a few months earlier. I went to the gallery to see the other drawings and sculptures other than the ones i had seen and admired at the Gemeentemuseum and i really fell for her sculptures. As i explained to her a few weeks ago …they were intriguing and completely different than the sculptures i had seen before. The use of wood, steel, ceramic and tissues all in one sculpture were new to me. Unfortunately i could not afford a sculpture, but time changes everything  and a few weeks ago i was able to buy KNAP KNAP KNA from the former Klein Breteler collection, who had the work acquired from gallery de Vries in Haarlem. The work was not sold during auction, but i was able to buy it in the aftersale. I informed Arjanne that i had bought the KNAP KNAP KNAP and she was delighted to hear it found a new home. She thought it to be one of her best works and is still very fond of it so i offered it on loan when ever she wanted to use it in an exhibition:

‘Knap Knap Knap’ (2009)

a mixed media object (ceramic, wood, paint, brass) in two parts, 70x100x40 cm

Provenance: Acquired from Galerie Rob de Vries, Haarlem

It is a large work which makes it not that easy to place although outside placement under a roof is an option.

I added this work last week to the FTN art section and for those interested in buying please inquire at wvdelshout@ziggo.nl
