Jaap Berghuis (1945-2005)

Schermafbeelding 2019-05-29 om 16.14.11

To be honest …i lost track of Jaap Berghuis in the last decades. Berghuis was educated at Ateliers 63 and one of the most promising young artists in the Seventies, but somehow after his shows at the gallery Art & Project, the collectors lost interest in his works and to me it now seems that this was not just.

Recently i encountered a truly wonderful painting at auction (i was outbid) and the amazing Art & Project BULLETIN publications that Berghuis made for van Ravesteijn and van Beijeren in their series of Bulletin publications. It shows now that Berghuis may have been ahead of his time since his painting now look as fresh as it must have been 40 years ago.

An important Antonio Calderara portfolio

Schermafbeelding 2019-04-20 om 12.41.26

Recently i acquired for my inventory one of the most important of all Calderara portfolio’s published just a few years before his death. It is the Tempo Spazio Luce portfolio published by the recently closed Galerie Nouvelles Images in 1975. The edition size, only 40 copies. 18 serigraphs….all signed with initials and numbered. Condition mint. I consider this period as Calderara’s best. The prints are as delicate as most of his prints from this period and these are not the small prints that are offered elsewhere but the large printed sheets that are 50 x 50 cm.

A beautiful and impressive set held togethjer in a special box, which is now 44 years and a rare offer for the Calderara fan. Box is Near Mint+, but all prints are in pristine /mint condition.

Ko Oosterkerk ( 1928-2012)

Schermafbeelding 2019-09-10 om 14.58.54

Jacobus Willem (Ko) Oosterkerk. It has not been recently that Ko Oosterkerk was admired for his black and white , highly abstract etchings. Almost in a contstructivist way he builds his compositions, but always was free, where the constructivist set their limitations.

A few years ago (2016) there was an exhibition at the Kampen Museum, which showed all the qualities of his work through the years. Just have a look at all these wonderful works by searching with Google and you will be amazed how timeless these works are. I leafed through the van Abbemuseum catalogue from 1975 and noticed the quality of all his works. I can highly recommend this artist who is on the verge of becoming much more popular, but now still is very affordable.

Frank Mandersloot (1960)

Schermafbeelding 2019-05-31 om 17.01.51

Frank Mandersloot is still one of the great sculptors in the Netherlands . Piules of furniture, draperies seemingly random placed, but always making curious and interacting with the space in which it is placed.

Educated in Den Bosch he nowadays is a valued teacher at the Rietveld Academy. For me the Frank Mandersloot catalogue is one of the best the Museum Boymans van Beuningen has published in the Nineties. Designed by 8vo from London it is a highlight among their publications. The catalogue is available at www.ftn-books.com

Carlo Battaglia (1933-2005)

Schermafbeelding 2019-08-30 om 15.47.20

Intrigued by the catalogue i found on Carlo Battaglia, i started to look into the life of Carlo Battaglia and noticed he became friends and worked together with Robert Motherwell, Ad Reinhardt and Mark Rothko. But i noticed other aspects in his works. after seeing a large room with Battaglia paintings on photo at studio LA CITTA. I was impressed and at the same time it reminded me of Mondriaan and LeWitt

Schermafbeelding 2019-08-30 om 15.47.59 he must have been influenced by Piet Mondriaan, because just look at the similarities ….just coincidence?

left is Battaglia / right is Duinlandschap by Piet Mondriaan

On the other hand he could have been an inspirator to Sol LeWitt in later years. Battaglia is first and then comes Sol LeWitt with his Horizontal Lines.

Still i like his works, This is the kind of art that inspires me and never bores.

www.ftn-books.com has publications available on all the artists mentioned

Battaglia served in the Italian Air Force from 1958–59, and in 1962 moved to Paris. In 1967, he lived in New York City, where he established friendships with Reinhardt, Motherwell and Rothko.

In 1970, 1978 and 1980, he was invited to the Venice Biennale, exhibiting his series about Maree (“Tides”) for the first time in 1970, which introduced a theme that would be prominent throughout his life. Battaglia’s most prominent exhibitions include retrospectives at Palazzo Grassi, in Venice in 1967, Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara in 1976 and the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf in 1978.

He also participated in a number of group shows about Italian contemporary art held in many international venues, including the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington in 1974, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 1977 and the Hayward Gallery in London in 1978. In 1978 and 1980, he participated to the 40th and the 43rd Venice Biennale. From 1980 on, he increasingly isolated himself and painted in total solitude.

Adriaan Rees (1957)

One of the most astonishing and surprising books i came across during my search for art books in the last year is certainly this Adriaan Rees book. Published in english and chinese. Containing cut outs, double pages , velvet cover this is a true artist book. Central theme within the book is the sculpture SCREAMING IN A BUCKET . Adriaan Rees is an exceptional sculptor in many ways.  Here is the text he wrote on himself and published it on his site.

EXPLORING WANDERER

Adriaan Rees (1957, Amsterdam) lives and works in China and Amsterdam. Rees is famous for his large-scale projects and assignments for public space. He makes sculptures and installations in many materials such as ceramics, bronze, glass, textiles, plaster and stone. He also works with photography and video.

When he works with clay, traces of his hands and the use of extreme power can easily be seen at the surface. He is approaching his sculptures almost as a landscape or a human body, sometimes in a sensual, sometimes in a brutal way. He is an artist who is not predictable, someone who always surprises with new ideas and approaches, a cosmopolitan artist.

Exploring wanderer, 2015

From 2000 Rees increasingly travelled to Asia, specifically to Japan, Korea and China. He is intensely affected by these cultures and settled in Jingdezhen, China where he works in his own studio among the thousands of craftsmen locally.

Tradition and innovation, humor and seriousness, monumentality and intimacy, vulnerable and tough, traditional and contemporary, religion and war, fantasy and reality. All this you can find in his sculptures: it is a dialogue between cultural traditions like Europe and Asia.

His work can be found in collections around the world, in museums, private collections and in public space. Rees teaches in The Netherlands, Germany, Finland, USA, Japan and China and frequently gives lectures about his own work, art and art in public space.

He also works as an art advisor and curator. Since 2008 he is the initiator and project leader for the Exchange project 400 years Delft – Jingdezhen. This project brings artists, designers, archaeologists and museums from both cities together. Famous are the Blue Revolution shows in museums in Delft (NL) and Jingdezhen and Donguan (CHN). The shows attracted more than 40.000 visitors in Delft, more than 80.000 in Jingdezhen and more than 200.000 in Donguan.

Rees was the curator of these shows.

Klaar van der Lippe (1961)

Schermafbeelding 2019-08-26 om 15.56.24

I knew the name and person of Klaar van der Lippe, because of her presence in a dutch survival television series, but it was not until 4 years ago that i came across a publication on van der Lippe published with in the series on new dutch sculptors ( also Baerveldt). The book shows in an excellent way why her works is important. In an almost casual way she alters her surroundings. Rearranging, replacing almost everything within sight , creating a new space and sculpting it into something very “Klaar van der Lippe”. The book which is now for sale at http://www.ftn-books.com shows some of these projects .
