This blog is devoted to the “golden” paintings by Remo Bianco. The studio Delise catalogue , which contains many examples of these golden paintings, is now available at http://www.ftn-books.com. The reason is that the paintings remind my of the golden minimal painting by Tomas Rajlich. Different but somehow they have a same approach to the canvas. They devide the canvas into equal parts and the golden layer is vissible in each adn every square.
The Tableaux Dorés series was executed by Bianco from 1957 as a development from his Collages. They represent one the most well-known cycles of the artist, and also the one that lasted the longest amount of time.
Bianco observed: “In 1957, in Milan, I applied some small sheets of gold leaf to a collage surface, after having painted it as a monochrome. The result was a two colour artwork, like a herald. This experience was probably the most ongoing of my researches. I continued this research for years, sometimes alongside other new Collages and other research”.
The two-colour backgrounds, oil or enamel paint, to which the gold leaf is subsequently applied, often have a white part alongside a red, blue or green surface, as well as other coloured surfaces. There are also some Tableaux Dorés with a monochromatic background or made with straw or fabric. These works stand out because of the light that radiates from the golden “tessera” (squares) the surfaces of which, irregular and frequently appearing veiled by shadows, create a counterpoint to the preciousness and fragility of the material. As expressions of a “contemplative maturity”, the Tableaux Dorés can be interpreted as “a sort of curtain that the artist brings down so that the viewer’s eyes can investigate the surface and beyond it but, at the same time, they shun theatricalism, instead proposing absolute silence” (P. Biscottini 2005).
Last year i stumbled upon this title…PORTRAIT OF THE ART WORLD…..published in 2002 by Yale, hardcover edition, 160 page filled with artists photographs. It is outright a fun book to own and even important because it portraits most of the arists in their studios, so you have a peek into the working space of these famous artists. This is the other Jan Hendrix. A contemporary of Jan Hendriks, but one that works from outside the Netherlands too and has a studio in Mexico. This land and its culture has a direct influence on his works. Hendrix is inspired by nature and this shows in practically all his works. The reason for this second blog on a “HENDRIX/HENDRIKS” is the catalogue i recently acquired . Just a site this time and an absolute tip for people who are interested in artist and their creative process. Artist are all photographed in their studios, which gives a great inside where and how art is created. The list contains numerous names of great artists and over the years has grown into one of the great sites to find information on art and their artists. Harke Kazemier, an artists himself has composed and edited this list from 2005 onwards.

Readers of this blog know of my admiration for Ossip. It started when i first saw one of his small figures at the Artoteek and wanted to own it for my collection. Far too expensive it was, but when i left the Gemeentemuseum and started FTN books. The museum and my colleagues presented me with the same sculpture i had seen at the Artoteek. It sparked the interest in Ossip and his art and since i have visited numerous times his studio and made frequent purchases.
Ossip name was becoming more and more familiar among collectors and it meant that prices for his works were on the rise.
But in a period of over 15 years i have bought frequently and managed to collect some very nice works through galleries and auctions. It is time to contact him once again and see for myself what kind of works he is making this time, because every time i visit his studio he amazes me with the progress and inventions he makes with his figures and mobiles. Piet Mondriaan was famous for his studios he occupied in Paris and New York and his Paris studio at the Rue du Départ was even a subject for a special exhibition at the Beurs van Berlage who had it rebuild in their main hall in 1994.
With the exhibition they produced together with the Benschop architects an impressive model kit of the studio, which even contains some of the paintings Mondriaan made in this famous studio. During the Nineties some of the DE STIJL icons were produced in Model Kit versions ( Meudon, Rietveldhuis) but this is probably the rarest of them al, since i understand it was not sold, but only presented to the sponsor and its relations. Moreno Bondi, just another name i encountered in a book…..a beautiful book, large sized excellent printing, but with one problem….i never had heard of Bondi, so i bought the book and looked into it and it did make me curious to find out more on the artist. At first he reminded me of Poen de Wijs, but there is more to the artist. It appears he organizes visits to his studio in Rome and explains his art to the visitors. Whenever i go to Rome this is certainly high on my list of wishes. Sizes are not the normal size of paintings but size starts at 150 x 150 cm. Really

It must have been somewhere around 1985. After a trip to the US and whta must have been a visit to Donald Judd’s studio, Flip Book, curator of the Modern Art department of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag came back with the story of a purchase he had made of a Donald Judd sculpture. I heard that the price paid was around 60.000 guilders and personally i thought it unheard that a sculpture like this would have such an elevated price tag. I thought it much to expensive for a sculpture like this, but as time progresses. i became wiser and it became clear to me that Flip had made a wonderful and very important acquisition for the Gemeentemuseum. The sculpture has been since in the Beeldentuin of the Gemeentemuseum and is still as, or perhaps even more, impressive as it originally was.
I realized that the important purchases for the collections of the Gemeentemuseum were all done from the late Sixties until the first years of the Nineties. It started with Minimal art by LeWitt, Judd and Andre, continued with some Schoonhoven, Weiner in the Eighties and perhaps the last important acquisition is the carrousel by Bruce Nauman. Since very little important acquisitions have been made, with one exception. I think the Paul Thek object will prove to be important in the future.
Just because personally i think that Ossip is one of the most important contemporary artists in the Netherlands and because he has an exhibition currently at galerie Ramakers, i want to share the documentary that was broadcasted yesterday on dutch television. It shows Ossip (Snoeck) and his father Jan Snoeck at work in their studios. They both have a very personal and authentic approach to their art and the universe Ossip creates and has created with his “sculptures”
