Two “scarce” Stedelijk Museum additions

bloc parent b

bloc parent c

It has been a long time since i encountered the No. 183 catalogue ,published by the Stedelijk Museum in 1958. The publication is a leporello like publication which folds out and describes the contributions by three French artists. The design done by Willem Sandberg makes this one stand out and it is one of the most scarce publications by the Stedelijk Museum. The artists André Bloc, Claude Parent and Charlotte Perriand. an absolute must have for the admirers of these artists and a highly collectable item for all interested in the Stedelijk Museum publications. (now available at www.ftn-books.com)

The second one is even more scarce and it is one i never have encountered before in all these years that i sell Stedelijk Museum publications. Designed by Wim Crouwel it is only a 4 page publication. Specially made for the Werkgroep Plakat Praag / Politieke affiches uit Tsjechoslowakije ( ODPOVĒDNOST)/ 1965. This is another highly desirable item for Stedelijk Museum/Crouwel collectors.

the Stedelijk Museum Bulletins

corbijn bulletin

Art & Project was not the only art gallery who published a regular bulletin in the Netherlands. In 3 consecutive decades, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam published their Bulletin series on a regular basis. Their Bulletins were more informative and less a small piece of art. I thought they were less interesting, but now some 15 years later I have become to appreciate these Bulletin publications. Great design, very informative and always “up to date”. Over the decades some very important and highly collectable Bulletins have been published. The series consists over 400 bulletin publications among which are some true classics which are available at ww.ftn-books.com. My thought about the Bulletin series has changed over the years and I think these publications are from an art point of view important. They show the exhibitions which were held over the years and include some of the best art ever. For me the following Bulletins can not be missed in any serious art book collection: Ben, Memphis, Keith Haring on the Velum, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt on his drawings. This is to name just a few……..

Pieter Holstein (1934)

Holstein works are on the border of comics and illustrations. They have a message to be told and within the picture one can discover a complete story even fantasize about the figures and what they are doing. It is a kind of art which is timeless and easy to admire. Figures and drawings are detailed without being realistic. As said a bit like comics are drawn and made.

The Stedelijk Museum recognized the qualities of these drawings in an early stage and made a beautiful catalogue together with the exhibition in 1970. The SIPKE & PIET boek is a typical Holstein production. Drawings and design ( WIm Crouwel), make this a highly collectable item.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Marino Marini (1901-1980)

Schermafbeelding 2019-12-28 om 15.15.52

When i think of Marino Marini, i think of the guided tour we had at one time on the estate of Joop van Caldenborgh. He collected the Caldic collection and recently was the founder of the museum Voorlinden near Wassenaar.

marini caldic

The Marini sculpture from the Caldic collection / Cavaliere (1952) is one of the first sculptures you will see when you enter the estate and it is placed on the corner of a “fragile” red brick wall and both the times i saw the sculpture i was scared it would fall, but beside that i was struck with the beauty of the sculpture. A typical Fifties work of art and important! because many great italian sculptures were made during the Fifties and Sixties, but only a few can be found in dutch public collections.

There was a raised interest in italian art during both these decades and the Stedelijk Museum, Boymans van Beuningen and Haags Gemeentemuseum, all presented the best from Italy in those years, but only a few of the presented works of art stayed in the Netherlands and became a part of the public collections of these museums.

Still some very nice publications were published to accompany the exhibitions and some are availabel at www.ftn-books.com

Gilbert & George…the N…. Sh.. pictures

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Why abbreviations for this blog title. It is because of Facebook and Pinterest censorship. They do not allow to show some more explicit great modern art because of the subject. However i must ask your attention for this great catalogue for one of the most controversial exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

gilbert naked shit ed

There is a life long friendship between Rudi Fuchs and Gilbert & George so it was the most natural venue for Gilbert & George to present this controversial series. Amsterdam, a liberal city had no problems with it . SO the show was held in 1996 and the catalogue published with it is one of the most collectable catalogues by this artists duo.

Rudi Fuchs wrote in his foreword:

Seeing these moving works for the first time, seeing their melancholy and sadness, I was reminded of paintings from long ago, for example Massaccio, of THE EXPULSION FROM PARADISE, Adam with his arm around Eve who was weeping, the two of them utterly lonely, going into the misery of human life.

This tells it all….controversial but beautiful and impressive

This catalogue is still available at www.ftn-books.com

the 500 first Stedelijk Museum publications…A very important list

Schermafbeelding 2020-07-24 om 15.06.36

Last Thursday i encountered finally one of the list I was hoping to find for a long time. The list is made in the beginning of the Eighties when interest rose in acquiring and collecting the Stedelijk Museum publications. Since the start in the Mid ’30s from last century, over 1100 publications have been published by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and this list contains the numbers and titles of the first 500 numbered publications. Willem Sandberg, Piet Zwart and Wim Crouwel, 3 of the greatest of Dutch designers all can be found on this list and i noticed of the 500 titles on it I have over 400 currently available at www.ftn-books.com

Beside the one on the list, there are of course many others published by the Stedelijk Museum FTN books has available. Take a look, save and share this very important document. the list is in PDF format and can be downloaded with the link below:

Polariteit and Polarität, 1961 exhibition

No difference in name of the exhibition. Just a different spelling. One is for the 1961 Stedelijk Museum and the other for the 19761 Recklinghausen exhibition. Both are designed by Willem Sandberg, almost identical covers and the use of different sorts of paper is equal too. …….But there is a difference. The German catalogue contains 208 pages and the dutch only 140 pages. I am still wondering if the complete exhibition was at the Stedelijk Museum or that the Recklinghaus exhibition was much more complete. I prefer the german one and i wish i could have seen this one. It is such a great exhibition and must be counted as one of the greatest exhibitions from the second half of last century.

Both catalogues are now available at www.ftn-books.com

100 Meesterwerken by Willem Sandberg

Schermafbeelding 2020-03-24 om 14.13.48

This is arguably one of the best Willem Sandberg publications of all time. An impressive cover, the use of multiple kinds of paper, the best art works from the Paris Modern Art Museum and an unbeatable price, because these are still available, but become more rare every year. I managed to collect 4 copies of this excellent 1952 catalogue of which 2 are now for sale at a special price of USD 35.00.

Please inquire at wvdelshout@ziggo.nl for a direct sale at this price.

Cuban posters

A recent auction of famous movie poster by Sotheby’s inspired me to have another look at the 70’s Crouwel designed catalogue which was made for the Cuban poster exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum. In 1971 the Stedelijk Museum had the foresight of organizing a Cuban poster exhibition. They recognized the outstanding quality of these posters. Political images were presented in colorful and powerful posters, but the auction shows a different side of these Cuban posters. Their interpretation of famous classic western movies. The Cuban designs were “classic” films with a twist. These posters were used to advertise famous titles in Cuba. Their strong designs and vibrant colours recall Havana in its heyday. The Cuban poster catalogue from 1971 is available at www.ftn-books.com

NUL/Zero and Al Held exhibition

This can not be coincidence…. On the left there is the NUL exhibition catalogue for the Peeters, Armando, Schoonhoven exhibition and on the right there is the Al Held catalogue from 1966 , designed by Wim Crouwel for the Held exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The white fond and the strong circle part on the back must have impressed Crouwel, since he used almost exactly the same layout as the ZERO/NUL catalogue which was published 2 years earlier for the Haags Gemeentemuseum exhibition.

www.ftn-books.com has both catalogues available and of course the special stitched multiple by Henk Peeters which was published shortly before his death.
