Ans Hey (1932-2010)

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-21 om 09.31.30

A typical career of a dutch artist. an artist who has had her share of admirers during her life but who never has reached true “stardom” in the dutch art scene.

This is changing rapidly. Since a few years her works are offered at auction. Affordable auctions which prove that her works are better than average since the auction results pass their estimates by a fair percentage. Ans Hey is foremost a sculptor who loved to work with stone. She sculpted and modelled and polished her stones sculptures until the result reached a level of perfection. Het inspiration was nature and the human body, making these sculptures understandable for practically all/ www.ftn-books.com has a nice etching by Ans Hey and of course the very best publication which was acquired recently at a local book market.

Martien Coppens (1908-1986)

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-19 om 15.24.02

Martien Coppens is a little like Vincent van Gogh. One difference…. van Gogh is a painter and Coppens is a photographer, but both have in common that they were fascinated by daily life of the people in Noord Brabant. Van Gogh found his subjects in the neighborhood of Zundert and Coppens photographed the people from DE PEEL.

Farmers, peasants, laundry women these were the people Coppens photographed.

Coppens is considered very important for the Cultural Heritage of the Netherlands since he photographed, daily life work and scenery in a time that the Netherlands grew from an agricultural into an industrial country. This is the main reasons why the Nederlands Fotomuseum acquired the photos by Coppens from his estate and decided to restore them all in 2008. The result… one of the most important dutch publications on a dutch photographer ever. This book is now available at www.ftn-books.com

Wim Izaks (1950-1989)

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-18 om 14.50.43

Almost violent in his approach of his canvas. Bright colors, large mouvements, complex compositions in the true Lyrical abstract tradition. studied at AKI under Roger Raveel, who valued his works as important and promising.

Izaks died at an early age but had an extremely large production. His paintings come up for sale occasionally and are sold by the Izaks foundation who uses these funds for publications on Izaks and a yearly stipendium for promising young artists.

Camille Bombois (1883-1970)

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-18 om 14.38.50

Camille Bombois (February 3, 1883 – June 6, 1970) was a French naïve painter especially noted for paintings of circus scenes.

Bombois was born in Venarey-les-Laumes in the Côte-d’Or, under humble circumstances. His childhood was spent living on a barge and attending a local school until the age of twelve, when he became a farm worker. During his free time he drew and competed in wrestling competitions at local fairs. He became a champion local wrestler before joining a traveling circus as a strongman and wrestler.

In 1907, Bombois fulfilled his dream of moving to Paris, where he married and worked as a railway laborer, eventually finding a night job at a newspaper printing plant handling heavy newsprint rolls. Despite the exhausting nature of his job he painted from dawn to dusk, sleeping little. He showed his paintings in sidewalk exhibitions, but his earliest paintings, revealing the influence of the old masters in their subdued use of color, attracted few buyers.

1914 marked the beginning of four-and-a-half years of military service in World War I. Bombois spent much of it on the front line, earning three decorations for bravery. Upon his return home, encouraged that his wife had succeeded in selling a number of his paintings in his absence, he resumed his routine of night labor and daytime painting. In 1922, his sidewalk displays in Montmartre began attracting the attention of collectors. The art dealer Wilhelm Uhde “discovered” him in 1924, and exhibited Bombois’ work in the Galeries des Quatre Chemins in 1927. In 1937, his works were shown in the exhibition “Maîtres populaires de la réalité” in Paris. His first solo show was in 1944 at the Galerie Pétridès. Critics compared Bombois’ work to that of Henri Rousseau, which it resembled in its naïve drawing, crisp delineation of form, and attention to detail, although Bombois was less of a fantasist than Rousseau.

The paintings of his maturity are bold in color, featuring strong contrasts of black, bright reds, blues and electric pinks. Drawing from his own experiences, he often painted circus performers and landscapes with fishermen. His paintings of women are emphatic in their carnality, and his landscapes are notable in their careful attention to space, and to the effects of reflected light on water. Bombois’ works are on view in many public collections, notably the Musée Maillol in Paris. The above text was found on Wikipedia

A tribute to Cor Rosbeek ( 1944-2019 )

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-16 om 14.29.57

Recently one of the driving forces in the dutch museum publications world died. I remember Cor Rosbeek as one of the most gifted of all printers in Europe. On those occasions that we met professionally he came up with practical solutions and had always in mind the quality of the finished product.

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-16 om 14.30.15

He made the impossible possible with a printing press and found solutions for the product that were thought to be impossible to realize. One of his best publications was the Diary of Anne Frank for which he made the facsimile reprint. Cor Rosbeek was a printing genius and realized many beautiful publications with the greatest of practically all (dutch) designers. His series of Rosbeek publications is known all over the world. In these publications everything comes together….great design, typography, layout, choice of papers and subject make these publications a monument for Cor Rosbeek. Some of these highly collectable publications are available at www.ftn-books.com

Jozef Cantré (1890-1957)

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-15 om 11.28.00

Jozef Cantré is well known in the Netherlands, He is originally from Belgium and lived for the main part of his life in Belgium, but by the end of WWI he fled to the Netherlands and stayed with some fellow artists in Blaricum. It is at that time that some dutch collectors took an interest in his works and acquired paintings, drawings, sculptures and woodblock prints. For me personally i think i like his woodblock prints the most of all. They have a rare graphic quality . www.ftn-books.com has some of his woodblock prints for sale ( for more information mail to wvdelshout@ziggo.nl).

Cantre had a very productive artistic life and together with his brother  Jan Frans Cantre, Joris Minne, van Straten and Frans Masereel he was part of the great “five”. These artists were among the very best woodblock artists from their generation and inspired each other. Personally i admire Frans Masereel the most. His woodblock prints are like comics that make up a story, but Jozef Cantre is a very close second.

an affordable Chanel bag..Coco in the City

Schermafbeelding 2019-04-10 om 14.44.45

A few years ago there was a special exhibition on Chanel at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. On the occasion several items were published. There was a catalogue, a poster and a special cotton bag. The last two items are now available at www.ftn-books.com.

There was also the Irma Boom / Chanel book of which the museumshop had a few copies, but these sold out within a few days even thought their price was HIGH!

The bag however is the original exhibition bag which was made specially for this occasion. A nice bag with the silhouette of Coco Chanel. A highly collectable item for sale at www.ftn-books.com

Erté / Romain de Tirtoff (1892-1990)

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-12 om 14.10.22

It was at the time i was living in Paris, that i frequently walked the rue du Seine , it is the place where all the art galleries used to have their exhibitions. Among them there was one who was showing the most beautiful Erté drawings and gouaches. I wondered why a gallery in Paris had such a huge selection (they had a few hundred of these drawings in stock ) but later i realized that the reason probably was that many of the theaters in Paris commissioned Erté their costume designs for their plays and shows. If i had known at that time that Erte was going to be one of the most important Art Deco artists i should have borrowed some money and bought me some Erté’s .

Later i managed to buy 2 drawings at auction at a fair price and these are sold some 20 years ago, but the memory of these walks along the gallery window in the rue du Seine remains.  I should have kept these auction drawings too, but decided at that time to make some profit on them.

As it is …. there are only a few publications that rest me and all these are available at www.ftn-books.com
