Two different Malevitch titles

On a recent book market visit i found 2 totally different publications on the same artist. Malevich being the subject it occurred to me that there was a great difference between both publications. One rather modern with the emphasize on his early works proved that the interest in his early works was not there from the early beginning. The other being earlier…. a Louisiana / Denmark Museum publication from 1959. Shows the influence of Willem Sandberg in its catalogue design and its approach is totally different. Only a few early works are depicted and the focus is on his Suprematist works, which were being discovered as highly important in those days. The ultimate “BLACK SQUARE” being the final result of his search in constructivist painting.

the Spanish Pavillion 1937

Last week i spend 2 days in Madrid and visited the Reina Sofia museum, because i wanted to show my son and his friend the “Guernica” painting by Picasso. The painting was shown for the first time in the spanish pavillion in 1937. The Republican government sought to garner international support by assembling modern works by sympathetic artists that express powerful and overt political outrage, including a large painting of an upraised fist by Joan Miro and unveiled on the ground floor was Picasso’s Guernica. But not only because of the art the building was important. Its architecture was certainly avant-garde for that time. Simple materials and influenced by le Corbusier the building itself was far ahead of its time.

The Spanish Pavillion in the Paris International Exhibition of T937 aimed at getting support from the international community in their detense of the Spanish Republic. The Government commissioned the Pavillion to the architects Josep Lluis Sert and Luis Lacasa, who designed a modern and low-cost building, with elements and materials From the traditional Spanish culture. It was consciously built as a modest and cosy space, featuring referents of a modern architecture inherited from Le Corbusier. A reasoned sample of art, culture and propaganda was shown in it, with an intention of bearing witness to the horrors of war while highlighting the optimism and ongoing productivity of the Government. The building housed the works of Alexander Calder, Josep Renau, Joan Miro, Julio Gonzalez, Alberto Sanchez and José Gutierrez-Solana amongst others. Yet, the most internationally acclaimed piece was Picasso’s Guernica, commissioned by the Government as a main artistic appeal.

Julio Gonzalez (1876-1942)

This blog was long due, because i personally think he is one of the all time greatest sculptors. The first time i noticed his works was some 30 years ago, ehren i first bought the Willem Sandberg designed publication that was publihed on the occasion of the 1955 Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam exhibition. This ia a classic by Willem Sandberg. A beautiful photo of Gonzalez in his studio on the cover  and with the use of the typical 2 kinds of paper within the catalogue. A brown rough paper for the text and the white paper for the photographs. these catalogues by Willem Sandberg are becomong more scarce by the year, so pick these up while you can.

Back to Gonzalez who’s works can be characterized as a symbiosis between the surreal and abstract forms. These abstract sculptures or masks are fascinating to look at  and with the use of scrap metal you always wonder what parts were used to make the composition. Is it something fabricated?….. or is it the original part which is used? Either way, the result is striking, their sizes not too small and not too large, these sculptures are to be admired by all.
