An important discovery among the many invitations i acquired recently. It is an original sketching by Förg for what presumably could be a wall drawing in one of the rooms of the Gemeentemuseum during and after his 2003 exhibition. In that time Förg was experimenting with loosely painted forms on canvas and walls.
On the painted paper sheet is the studio stamp of Günther Förg in Freiburg and the paper is devided into two parts. The upper part is painted with a deep green and handwritten the text Gemeentemuseum in blue ballpoint, underneath in pencil Den Haag 2003. Left of the green a text in blue ballpoint ” Moikan (?)” The lower part of the design/drawing/painting is in a “leather brown” color and in pencil beside “Israel” is written . On the lowest part of the sheet the studio stamp in black ink.
My educated guess is that this is a proposal for a wall drawing in one of the rooms of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and this highly collectable item is now available at www.ftn-books.com.
For many among us Günther Förg is the painter of lead surfaced paintings and one great print maker, but there is another quality in which he excels. Förg was a great photographer and made some high quality photo books on the almost forgotten ( Bauhaus )architecture of Tel Aviv and Moscow. The book on Tel Aviv i have sold a very long time ago, but was fortunate to find a Moscow copy with his photographs on a recent book market. This is a truly outstanding publication. Large sized , printed and published by Snoeck and of the highest print quality. The book shows the excellence of his photographs and makes you wonder why art lovers all over the world are not familiar with this part of Förg’s work.. The photographs look like still lives and do not only have an artistic quality but a historic quality too. Where the Tel Aviv book is of the highest quality, this Moscow book even looks better. It is a publication of a rare quality and a highly collectable photography/art book.
Günther Förg, together with Sol LeWitt, this artist is one of the most promising artists for the future.
With Abstract painting, Graphic art and photographs, Günther Förg has made a name for himself in the world of Art.
Because he was discovered in the late eighties by some dutch curators a.o Flip Bool, directors ( Rudi Fuchs) and Wim van Krimpen as a gallery owner, he received at an early stage of his career some important exhibitions in the Netherlands. Among them there was a gallery presentation in the van Krimpen gallery in Amsterdam. At that time Wim van Krimpen had some nice young artists who were presented in his gallery. Among them Piet Dirkx ( yes… from the Piet Dirkx daily) and Günther Förg, who had a chance to present some lead paintings and large photographs at the gallery. With this exhibition, an extremely nice set of 4 color lithographs was published in a small edition of only 25 copies. I loved and love the works by Gunther Forg and i am fortunate to have bought 2 of these sets at the time they were published. One litho from the set is depicted on the cover of Gunther Forg/ The complete editions 1974-1988 and within the book the set is spread over 2 pages (64 and 65) and illustrated. So far the history of the set which was published in 1987 by galerie van Krimpen.
A leap in time brings us to ca. 2000 when i spoke Wim van Krimpen and told him we had met before at the time i bought the sets and he told me i was lucky , because about 15 sets were destroyed because his cellar at one time flooded and the sets could not be saved, leaving in total about 10 sets that were sold at the gallery and were among collectors.

Since his death in 2013 Günther Förg works are in high demand at auctions and with art dealers and i believe this demand will not end for a long long time. Günther Förg’s art is original and exquisite and this set which is now on offer is one of the best he ever has published . Look at the FTN art page for additional information.
Born in Switzerland in 1937, Niele Toroni rose to fame in an era that other Swiss artists were very much under the influence of constructivism…. Lohse and Honegger among them. Toroni left that stage behind him and developed a minimal style of his own. The main difference between these two and Toroni is that Toroni progressed his art into a form of MINIMAL ART in which he altered the space by painting with a regular space between them brushstrokes in squares onto a surface using one specific color. He usually uses one specific brush no 50. The imprints made with this n°50 paintbrush are repeated at regular intervals of 30 cm. His works are found in many modern art museum collections including the Stedelijk museum and the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. In which one of the 4 Staircases is painted by Toroni ( the others by LeWitt, Forg and Tuzina).
These four staircases are there for over 25 years now and have proven to be very important In Situ works of art. All artist have become famous contemporary artists and really make one look at these staircases with different eyes. They are not ordinary staircases any longer , but works of art and part of a great collection.
The year 1988…the exhibition…the first major Günther Förg exhibition organized by the Haags Gemeentemuseum and curated by Rudi Fuchs. On show large lead paintings with constructivist patterns on them and emphasized by Günther Förg his photography of blown up architecture and portraits. Impressive exhibition and one of the first Fuchs curated for the Gemeentemuseum. In Amsterdam a little earlier in time, Wim van Krimpen, who became director himself of the Gemeentemuseum, organized a Günther Förg show and published with this show a beautiful set of lithographs in a very small edition of 25 ( 1987). Large sized sheets of quality paper printed with 4 typical Günther Förg works. I bought the set and had it on the wall for over 10 years, removed it from the wall and forgot about it until….Wim van Krimpen became the director of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and i told him we had met before on the occasion of me buying this set in his gallery. He said i was lucky to have the complete set. I asked him why. He told me he stocked what was left after the show in his basement to “save them for a rainy day”, but unfortunately he had a leakage in his basement and all were damaged and destroyed. I asked him how many series there were left within the edition and he told me that more than half was destroyed. This would mean that only 10 copies of each print have survived.
A great loss, but still there are some to be found if you keep searching for them 😉
The second time i met Günter Tuzina was with his exhibition in 1992 in The Haags Gemeentemuseum and noticed that he still followed his own artistic path. Making variations on his windows with crossed lines in color schemes which were very recognizable and typical for the works by Tuzina. At the time Tuzina executed a walldrawing for one of the staircases in the Gemeentmuseum which is beside the LeWitt, Toroni and Forg staircase drawings still on show. I think Tuzina is one of those artists you can see work of and immediately know it is by Tuzina. A few years ago i was impressed by a work which was for sale at Christie’s but unfortunately it was out of my budget and sold for twice+ the estimation, but one can get lucky too, because a little before that i noticed these 2 beautiful drawings on the local book market, which were made in a series of 55 for the Bebert publishing house. Both are signed and numbered and all the drawing on each of them is done by hand and all have a different background color. These are from the same edition of 55 copies but the background colors vary and therefore these are unique and…..these beauties are now for sale at
