KD at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1963

kd c

Willem Sandberg was a visionary designer and director for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He was one of the first who recognized the importance of designs by artists for daily used items and so he decided to invite 4 artist to design special curtains and tissues for a ” KD” exhibition/ Kunstenaars Dessins.

The artists? …Karel Appel, Jef Diederen, Ger Lataster and Dick Elffers. These four made some wonderful designs which were presented in the KD exhibition. With the exhibition a catalogue was published in 1963 which has become one of the rarest of Stedelijk Museum catalogues of all time. Three reasons why this has become rare. Less than 500 copies were made. The paper used was fragile and it was a thin catalogue of only 12 pages and folded and last but not least…. the photography was done by Ed van der Elsken which made the remaining copies desirable and collectable. Still at least one copy is still on the market and available at www.ftn-books.com

Co Westerik ( 1924-2018) dies at the age of 94.

Yesterday morning the family of Co Westerik announced the death of this great dutch painter. His works are present in practically every large dutch museum and some admiring collectors ( the late Frits Becht ao) managed to buy more than average numbers of paintings from him and that is quite an accomplishment since his production was low…..extremely LOW. In many a year he managed to complete only as few as 3 paintings, making his work a rare work to add to a collection. It was different with his prints and drawings, because here his production was “normal”. One quality all his works have in common……it is the extreme detail and craftsmanship that make his works of high quality and stand out from the rest. At the time i worked at the Gemeentemuseum  i met the artist on several occasions, but i only remember that i spoke to his representatives concerning catalogue and postcard productions. Even on these occasion he was highly (rightfully) concerned about the result. But in the end he had the publication as he had visualized it. The costs did not matter to him….the result did. ww.ftn-books.com has many titles available on Co Westerik.

Hamish Fulton (1946)

Schermafbeelding 2018-06-18 om 12.36.43

An earlier blog on Fulton told the story i met Fulton and he graciously signed 20 copies of his book “100 walks” to be sold in the shop of the Gemeentemuseum, but this time i want to tell you about the special publications Fulton has made in the Netherlands. As far as i know there are 4 publications that are worth mentioning of which 3 are available at www.ftn-books.com.

  • the Art & Project publication is rare and very hard to find
  • the 100 walks is available at www.ftn-books.com
  • the van Abbemuseum / Hamish Fulton is available
  • the Stedelijk Museum Hamish Fulton publication from 1973 is the rarest of them all and…..available

These publications are real finds when you find one and true artist books which are highly collectable Fulton items. Hamish Fulton is becoming more an more important, s as long as these publications are available add them to your collection.

Wim Crouwel and the van Abbemuseum

Schermafbeelding 2018-06-11 om 12.20.40

Before Wim Crouwel became the main designer for all publications published by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in in the 60’s, 70’s and early Eighties (TD). There was a short 4 years that he made some beautiful publications for the van Abbemuseum Eindhoven. In these you can recognize the early Wim Crouwel. Size, use of multiple ( colored) papers, typography and layout are all typical for the early Wim Crouwel. www.ftn-books.com is fortunate to have a nice selection of these early WimCrouwel designed publications. Pictures tell a better story than words can . In this case , this certainly true. So here are some nice van Abbemuseum publications by Wim Crouwel.

IJmuider Kring

The book that is for sale at www.ftn-books.com is also in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. There are several reasons for it; First the IJmuider Kring is growing more important each year.

Schermafbeelding 2018-06-08 om 15.32.09

Guy Molin made a short 46 min documentary on the IJmuider Kring in 1986 and since art collectors began to realize the importance of the Kring and the importance of the participating artists grew steadily. Who where the participating artist in the IJMUIDER KRING:

Pieter Defesche, Gerard van den Eerenbeemt, Theo Kuypers, Jon Marten, Lei Molin, Jaap Mooy and Reyer Kras

The foreword in this important book was written by famous dutch author Bert Schierbeek and the publisher Reflex made a wonderful publication on the Kring. Worth collecting , hence the objectnumber. in the Stedelijk Museum collection.

Pop Art exhibitions in the Low Countries.

According to my information the first large scale Pop Art exhibitions in the Netherlands took place in 1964. With it was the famous Wim Crouwel designed catalogue published with the upper right corner  “folded”.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A spectacular cover and an example for many other designers to follow this and being inspired by this cover for the years to come. Since, other exhibition  followed of which many publications are available at www.ftn-books.com. One other has certainly to be mentioned because it followed in the year after the Stedelijk Museum exhibition took place. In this case POP ART was combined with the French/Belgium wave which followed in the steps of Pop Art, Le NOUVEAU REALISME.

This way the United States Pop Art mouvement was combined with the European Pop Art artist like Martial Raysse.

Since other Pop Art exhibitions took place all over Europe, but the Netherlands  and Belgium stayed interested in this fascinating art. I remember recent exhibitions in Schiedam, Nijmegen, Kunsthal Rotterdam, Brussels and the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag all being successful, making Pop Art an established art form…Pop Art is here to stay.

Art prices… gallery versus auction

auke de vries gele labels

Today i added to my inventory a book by Auke de Vries for his Museum Wiesbaden exhibition from 1990. i knew the title and had sold copies before, but what made this one special is that on ca. 10 of the pages yellow post-it’s were fixed with gallery prices in guilders. I leafed through the book and was surprised to find the prices to be as steep as 50.000 guilders. It was not long ago that i attended 2 auctions where several small and larger sculptures by Auke de Vries were sold , fetching prices between euro 2500 and 4000 for a larger sculpture.

Schermafbeelding 2018-06-06 om 11.49.22

I compared these with the 1990 gallery prices within the Wiesbaden catalogue and found that prices had devaluated with over 60% when compared with the actual auction prices including premium in 2017. Of course the gallery fees are  between 40 and 50%, but when you consider that money has devaluated too in these past two and a half decades the devaluation of Modern Art of a very good artist like Auke de Vries is over 80% compared with the original gallery price. Should i then still buy art?……YES! because you can have tremendous pleasure from it. You search for and find good art and enjoy it at home when you bought or rent it and yes… you support the artist with your buy, but if you ask me , should i buy art as an investment? my advise would be …be careful for the artist you select, because most of them will not be worth very much after a few decades.

But when you are patient, that means a period of 20+ years, you will discover that works by the artist you admire start to appear at auction and are much more affordable and even can be bought by most collectors for as little as a few hundred euro.  I can give you an example of a great Arie van Geest which recently was added to our collection for an extremely fair amount.

Schermafbeelding 2018-06-06 om 12.02.46

You only learn of the auction records by artist like Warhol, Koons and Hirst, but you can ask yourself…are these works by these artists really that special or are they a marketing product… a true hype? if i did not know who the artist is and  did not know the value of a work …would i buy it ? In the case of Auke de Vries i personally would do so at the price level that i recently experienced at auction, but for the prices in the Wiesbaden catalogue i would “pass”. Art should not be bought as an investment and i dare say that the great collectors in the world never have bought art for its value, but because they admire the artist and his or her works and you should do the same, because there is still some great art to be found and bought at fair prices. www.ftn-blog.com and www.ftn-books.com have art for sale which is published in edition and is still affordable.

A nice special comparison between Vincent van Gogh and Arman

At the gallery Marianne & Pierre Nahon,  Arman presented his series that he made while inspired by one of the most famous Vincent van Gogh paintings LA NUIT ETOILEE.  A painting that inspired other artists too.

For instance Don McLean made his Starry Starry Night as . a tribute to this painting and the life of Vincent van Gogh.

But Arman took his inspiration not from the music but from the composition, colors and the swirl of the paint. The series is fantastic and shows the strength of Arman. He mixes his personal style with that of van Gogh. The catalogue from 1994 is now available at www.ftn-books.com together with many other Arman publications.

A very special Wim Couwel publication for the H.N. Werkman 1964 exhibition

Some combinations are hard to beat and this one is surely a classic. Wim Crouwel was not yet promoted to the position of designer of the catalogues of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and had just left the van Abbemuseum with his designs. In the in between period he did some free lance works and one of these was the catalogue he designed for the H.N.Werkman exhibition of 1964 in the Groninger Museum and this catalogue became the standard for all his future designs. He chose a slim sized catalogue, but within the book he used some of the papers which he had used in the van Abbemuseum catalogues and would use again for the Stedelijk Museum catalogues. Making it simple but still complex.

On the cover a bold and typical Werkman print which emphasized the graphic quality of the catalogue. The back…. a typical red with clear black and white lettering. This is in my opinion one of the very best graphic designs ever made in the Netherlands and i am proud to still have a copy for sale of this beautiful and splendid Wim Crouwel catalogue.

Ferdi ( Ferdina Jansen 1927-1969)

Ferdi was the wife of dutch Pop Art painter and sculptor Shinkichi Tajiri and was married to him until her tragic death in 1969. If i look at her work now, the first other artist i think about is Niki de Saint Phalle. I really do not know if they have known each other but it is possible when you look at the time frame, they possibly knew and inspired each other. Ferdi, educated by Ossip Zadkine, used large pieces of cloth and textiles to assemble her figures female form inspired figures for which she has become very well known in the Netherlands. Recently, I think it was 2012 , the Rijksmuseum acquired WOMB TOMB with the help of the heirs of her estate

Schermafbeelding 2018-05-23 om 11.06.30

Her husband Shinkichi Tajiri is nowadays a recognized and settled name and specially known for his large Pop Art sculptures. Ferdi is far less known. Her works appear sometimes at auction but that is it for this moment. It is time that some dutch museum shows new interest in her because her works fascinate and deserve to be known abroad too. The stedelijk Museum published a very nice catalogue with her works which was designed by Wim Crouwel and some 15 years ago another important book was published in which her works were shown together with toise from her husband. Both are available at www.ftn-books.com
