Barend Blankert excels in realism with a twist. In some cases his works remind me of Teun Hocks ( tomorrows blog) , but most of the time one feels an “unease” in the scene. Wether the object/person is curled up on the floor, on the edge of a bed or crouching at a table. You feel a pity for the person in the painting. Blankert does not hesitate to refer to other painters in his paintings. There is this great example of the two boys in the Seurat painting BAIGNEURS A ASNIERES (in the National gallery collection). The two boys in the Blankert painting are exact copies of the ones in the Seurat painting, but where the painting by Seurat is crowded by others. The two boys are alone in an empty room, making the scene a sad one.

His first exhibtion was held in 1966 at galerie 20 and since Walter Nobbe has had a loyal following of admirers. He was a master in drawing and painting the male figure and since his early days as an artist he belonged to the ABN group. Together with Pat Andrea and Peter Blokhuis he formed this group of young painters who were considered as the “creme de la Creme’ of dutch new realistic painters. Nobbe deserves a reappreciation of his art.
It has beside a high level of Craftmanship some great artistic components that make these work stand out from other from this era. Nobbe has had a loyal following. Specially in Den Haag and surroundings his works are well known. Pulchri and Gemeentmuseum have had his works frequently on show during exhibitions. Still, ask about Nobbe outside the region and his name becomes less familiar and that is a pity.

Yesterday morning the family of Co Westerik announced the death of this great dutch painter. His works are present in practically every large dutch museum and some admiring collectors ( the late Frits Becht ao) managed to buy more than average numbers of paintings from him and that is quite an accomplishment since his production was low…..extremely LOW. In many a year he managed to complete only as few as 3 paintings, making his work a rare work to add to a collection. It was different with his prints and drawings, because here his production was “normal”. One quality all his works have in common……it is the extreme detail and craftsmanship that make his works of high quality and stand out from the rest. At the time i worked at the Gemeentemuseum i met the artist on several occasions, but i only remember that i spoke to his representatives concerning catalogue and postcard productions. Even on these occasion he was highly (rightfully) concerned about the result. But in the end he had the publication as he had visualized it. In the time the PC. Hooftstraat in Amsterdam was not a fashion street, but an ordinary city street with a butcher, a grocery, baker, vegetables shop and even a garage. In those days there were some galleries who held residence in the P.C. Hooftstraat,. Among them there was gallery IKON, which presented religious icons and yes, i was the shopkeeper …it was one of my first jobs in the art world. At one day Carel Willink passed by , returned and entered the gallery. Hat, walking stick, bow tie . He really looked like a bohemian. Now almost 35 years later i still remember the person, but as an artist i lost interest. His technique is phenomenal, but in the last years of his life he only took consignments and made portraits for famous dutch people. One exception… . The (nude) portrait he made of his wife Sylvia is exceptionally beautiful.
