Part of the inside of both publications is the same. Covers are the same , but here comes the difference. Backcovers are different and there are less pages in the Steendrukkerij de Jong catalogue. It is clear that Steendrukkerij de Jong used the same design by Wim Crouwel he made for the van Abbemuseum for this iconic Sixties catalogue. But where the van Abbemuseum is scarce, The Steendrukkerij de Jong publication is nowhere to be found anymore. This is probably because it was a simple “handout” publication for the exhibition at the printers. My guess is only a few hundred were printed and this is one of the only surviving ones. Jaap Mooy is a dutch artist who is increasingly recognized as being important for Modern Art in the Netherlands. He witnessed the development of abstract art and was in the last decade of his artistic life an abstract painter pur sang. There are many influences to be recognized within his art. There is a bit Lucebert, Karel Appel, Tajiri, Jean Arp and Tinguely, but also influences of Bauhaus in his collages.
Still this kind of art is getting more important by the year, because it shows the way abstract painting was developing over the years in the Netherlands and Jaap Mooy was an important artist contributing to this development.
It was in the earliest years of his career that Wim Crouwel was invited to design the catalogues of the van Abbemuseum and in these years several iconic publications were published that were designed by Crouwel. I have encountered over the years many of them and have a nice selection for sale at www.ftn-books.com, but until last month i never had seen the Tajiri catalogue from 1961. It was one of the earliest of Tajiri his catalogues for a major museum, but Wim Crouwel must have felt the same about the catalogue as Tajiri did. Both must have the iedea that is was important for them personally. The typography on the cover is outstanding and the photograph by Cas Oorthuys even enhances it. This is a thin 12 page catalogue with a special 4 page inlay ( with photographs of sculptures), but every page shows the quality of Wim Crouwel his design in combination with the works by Tajiri.
Ferdi was the wife of dutch Pop Art painter and sculptor Shinkichi Tajiri and was married to him until her tragic death in 1969. If i look at her work now, the first other artist i think about is Niki de Saint Phalle. I really do not know if they have known each other but it is possible when you look at the time frame, they possibly knew and inspired each other. Ferdi, educated by Ossip Zadkine, used large pieces of cloth and textiles to assemble her figures female form inspired figures for which she has become very well known in the Netherlands. Recently, I think it was 2012 , the Rijksmuseum acquired WOMB TOMB with the help of the heirs of her estate
Her husband Shinkichi Tajiri is nowadays a recognized and settled name and specially known for his large Pop Art sculptures. Ferdi is far less known. Her works appear sometimes at auction but that is it for this moment. It is time that some dutch museum shows new interest in her because her works fascinate and deserve to be known abroad too. The stedelijk Museum published a very nice catalogue with her works which was designed by Wim Crouwel and some 15 years ago another important book was published in which her works were shown together with toise from her husband. A month ago i was contacted by Ryu Tajiri ( the widow of Maarten Ploeg ) with a question regarding 2 paintings that were possibly in the collection of our family. The first was one of my very first acquisitions “OK hoofd” which i bought after seen it in the “Keus van de Kunstenaar” show at the Gemeentemuseum. The second one was a much smaller painting which landed in the collection of my parents, after they had traded in a much larger work which they could not hang in their small house. I know that Maarten Ploeg was married to a daughter of Shinkichi Tajiri, but what i did not know is that there has been a small but excellent publications on the collectors of Maarten Ploeg works. If you search you will find the book “PLOEG IS OK” , but it will not be an easy search since i only have one copy which was presented to me by Ryu and i could not find a second one on the internet.
Ryu contacted me because she was trying to trace several paintings by Maarten Ploeg that were sold by Rob Jurka . I could help her with 2, because they are still in my collection.
There are not many publications on Ploeg. There is the Metropolis M publication, De Keus van de Kunstenaar and the Ploeg is OK, one but to my knowledge that is all…. except…….there will be a large publication of over 500 pages published by te end of the year. Crowdfunding is now ended and the project can be executed. As i read the publication will be 500 pages and an edition of only 350 copies. Tajiri…. Photographer, Painter, sculptor, graphic artist . He has practically explored every discipline art has. His claim to fame were his large sculptures and specially the KNOTS are more than impressive. As a person he is even more fascinating, because he was in the middle of things, because of his studies and travels he had met many very important artists.
In 1949 he went to Paris to study with Ossip Zadkine and then Fernand Léger. He met Karel Appel and Corneille in Paris and shows at the 1949 COBRA exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. In 1951 he went to Germany and taught at the Werkkunstschule Wuppertal. In 1955 he won a Golden Palm at Cannes, for his first short film, The Vipers, because of his experimental use of the language of film. From 1956 he lived in the Netherlands, since 1962 in Baarlo. He worked as a sculptor and painter. He exhibited at the famous Kassel documenta II, 1959; III, 1964 and IV, 1968. From 1969 Tajiri taught at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste at Berlin. 1969 and 1970 Shinkichi took pictures of every part of the Berlin Wall. In 1970 he went to Denmark and directed the award-winning documentary Bodil Joensen – en sommerdag juli 1970 about Bodil Joensen. In 1975 and 1976 he recreated the Daguerreotype: surreal portraits, nudes and daguerreotypes of the Wall.
On this last subject www.ftn-books.com has a very nice publication available. Daguerreotyoes were Tajiri’s other specialty.
