Kijkduin an unknown artist village near DEN HAAG

Schermafbeelding 2021-08-18 om 16.15.48

Kijkduin has became part of the City of Den Haag, but in its early years of its existence around 1920 it became part of a large plan . a new villa park  was planned. #Meer en BOSCH # was to become an exclusive part of the city near dunes and sea with architecture of the very best of dutch architects and best of all…..yes…. a large part of the original plans were realised, but Kijkduin is still unknown by the majority of architecture fans and vistors to Den Haag. Villa’s by Duiker made this one of the most wanted and exclusive parts of Den Haag and surroundings and very well worth a visit and a walk in the park and after a walk on the beach and for those who visit Kijkduin and still not tired please walk another 500 meters to the HEMELS GEWELF by James Turrell.

Gerard Verdijk (continued)

Schermafbeelding 2020-05-13 om 15.35.39

There was a time that Den Haag had multiple important art galeries, but it now looks like practically all have disappeared. I do not why , but many have stopped their business. One of them must have been Roger Verstraten , since it was about 8 years ago that I encountered at the local book market a box containing all kinds of small publications on Gerard Verdijk. Being a collector of his works I bought the box and many have since become part of my personal library, but one publication was present with multiple copies in the box and 2 of these were signed by Gerard. I did not discover this until recently I leafed through them and noticed that, besides my own personal copy, another one was signed and dedicated to Roger Verstraten. The little book ” VERGETEN DAT JE HET VERGAT ” was published on the occasion of the Artoteek exhibition in 2000.

The second signed copy of this book, which was published in an edition of only 750 copies, is now available at www.ftn-books.com

Ossip ( 1952 )….continued

Schermafbeelding 2020-05-03 om 13.16.25

Readers of this blog know of my admiration for Ossip. It started when i first saw one of his small figures at the Artoteek and wanted to own it for my collection. Far too expensive it was, but when i left the Gemeentemuseum and started FTN books. The museum and my colleagues presented me with the same sculpture i had seen at the Artoteek. It sparked the interest in Ossip and his art and since i have visited numerous times his studio and made frequent purchases.

Ossip name was becoming more and more familiar among collectors and it meant that prices for his works were on the rise.

But in a period of over 15 years i have bought frequently and managed to collect some very nice works through galleries and auctions. It is time to contact him once again and see for myself what kind of works he is making this time, because every time i visit his studio he amazes me with the progress and inventions he makes with his figures and mobiles. Some very nice Ossip publications are available at www.ftn-books.com

Jan Roëde ( continued )

Schermafbeelding 2020-04-28 om 11.00.08One of my personal favourite painters is Jan Roëde. Not very well known outside the Netherlands, but in the Netherlands, he has build a name for himself with frequent gallery and museum exhibitions. One thing I want to share with the readers of this blog is the frequent return of some elements in his paintings. Children, parents and some animals are to be found on his colourful paintings, but the one I like personally most is this “bird he puts in many cases next to his signature.

Schermafbeelding 2020-04-28 om 10.55.14

It is a typical Roëde element which makes his paintings immediately recognized.  A fun fact, but also a part of the paintings which has the function of an extra signature, because the Roëde bird is one of a kind and no other bird in the world has this shape and can be found in so many colours.

There are some nice Roëde publications available at www.ftn-books.com

Jan Roëde (1914-2007)

Jan Roëde was a contemporary of Piet Ouborg, Jaap Nanninga and Wim Sinemus, whom he met regularly in The Hague at the cafe DE POSTHOORN.. He was influenced by Miró’s form of abstract Surrealism. His paintings, populated by figures and shapes, are the result of a search for a world of forms that arose from him personally. Abstract or figurative was all the same to him. In fact the process of painting was more important than the forms that came out of it. In the last 2 decades. The Miro liked shaped forms almost disappeared from his painting and in their place came almost childish figures that populated the canvasses from that time on. On many a small bird appeared like a sort of extra signature.

Jan Roede is now part of our collection, since we managed to buy a very nice painting at auction last October. Jan Roëde was married to the sister of Will Leewens another artist which is in our collection and both have in common that during the 70’s and 80’s both sold their work on a regular basis to the Artoteek/HEDEN. This work, like so many others, comes originally from the HEDEN collection.

www.ftn-books.com has of course some nice publications on Jan Roëde

Will Leewens (1923-1986).. playful abstract painting

Schermafbeelding 2018-01-20 om 15.25.25

Without knowing , many people have contributed to the popularity of this artist and his works nowadays. He was one of the key artist who first started making his works available through dutch “Artotheeks” and art libraries. This started in the late Sixties and continued until the mid eighties. Art Libraries were fond of his works , because they were very colorful, abstract and even a little mystic, making them attractive for many of their members. These works are now recognized as typical Sixties/Seventies works of abstract art and belong to the best and most appreciated art works from these decades in the Netherlands. They are the colorful paintings Willem Hussem would have made when he still had lived . They are far less affordable  than a decade ago, but still very affordable and promiss a steep increase in value for the decades to come. Start searching in art databases and visit some galeries who have a nice selection of these works available and start here ….. www.ftn-books.com ( Ftn art ) has a beautiful painting for sale and for some reading search for Leewens at www.ftn-books.com

Frans Zwartjes (1927)

Schermafbeelding 2017-05-25 om 08.33.51

One of the dutch pioneers in dutch video and film art is certainly Frans Zwartjes. He is known for his experimental form of movie making. Somewhat psychedelic and always with a different camera point of view. Let his art speak for himself and look at SPECTATOR from 1970

There is a nice book available at www.ftn-books.com which was published on the occasion of Zwartjes receiving the Ouborg price.
