Steven Aalders (1959) … and Irma Boom

Schermafbeelding 2018-06-18 om 11.59.12

There are 3 reasons why i like the works by Steven Aalders.

  • First of all these are contructivist paintings which i think belong to the best produced in the Netherlands these days
  • Second . One of the best exhibitions held at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag was the Steven Aalders exhibition held in 2010
  • Third.. With the exhibition an Irma Boom designed catalogue was sold at the Gemeentemuseum shop and i think this is one of the best Irma Boom ordinary books she has made in the last 10 years. ( This book is available at www.ftn-books.com)

enough reasons to write this blog on Steven Aalders and recommend to follow this artist in the future, because his art is a little different from the other constructivist painter and deserves to be known outside the Netherlands too.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Steven Aalders is well known for his exact painted constructive oil paintings, where he deals with and continues the concept of modernism of Piet Mondrian, De Stijl and American Minimal Art. At his first exhibition in Munich Aalders shows a new body of work on the issue “Red, Yellow and Blue”, where the areas of the color fields follow the “Golden Ration”. An extensive retrospective catalogue was published in 2010 for his solo exhibited at the Gemeentemuseum, Den Haag. Steven Aalders, born in 1959, lives and works in Amsterdam.

Piet Klaasse ( 1918 – 2001 )

Schermafbeelding 2018-06-17 om 11.13.05

My first encounter with work by Piet Klaasse was the time i bought a book on music, illustrated by Piet Klaasse. It certainly was not my kind of art i was interested in, but later i saw the quality of his illustrations. Specially his drawings and paintings of horses are of a rare quality. I compared his work with Rien Poortvliet’s but where Poortvliet tells a story with his illustrations, Klaasse doesn’t. HIs works stand as individual works of art and each tell  a story of their own and are much more mature than those by Poortvliet. I will never buy a Klaasse for my collection but i know of people very much interested in his works. For those …know that www.ftn-books.com has the famous PIET KLAASSE TEKENT PAARDEN in its inventory.

Pierre et Gilles … not always controversial, but fortunately they still are.

Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard, also known as Pierre et Gilles, are French artists and romantic partners. They have been producing works together since 1976, creating a world where painting and photography meet. Their art is peopled by their friends and family, anonymous and famous, who appear in sophisticated life-size sets the artists build in their studio. They meticulously apply paint to the photographs once printed on canvas. Accomplished image creators, Pierre and Gilles have built up an extraordinary contemporary iconography on the frontier between art history and popular culture.

Pierre et Gilles have sometimes attracted controversy. For example, in 2012 there was a public outcry in Austria when their work entitled Vive la France was displayed on large street posters.

It depicts three naked French footballers with their genitals fully revealed: the first black, the second Arab/Muslim and the third white, to represent the multi-ethnic composition of modern French society. The ensuing controversy led to an act of self-censorship by the artists, who decided that the largest street posters should be changed, and instead use coloured ribbons to hide the players’ genitals. Personally i understand that this self censorship is the right thing to do when one choses to show these photographs in public places, however sex, gay subjects and male nudity are frequently present in their photographs making it difficult to avoid these photographs because these are such an integral part of their oeuvre. Are these typically 80’s /90’s photographs?….i do not think so. These are “classic” highly creative and original photographs with one signature, as if they were made by one and the same person. Pierre et Gilles is not two, but artistically one person/artist. www.ftn-books.com has a number of Pierre et Gilles publications available.

Giacomo Manzu (1908-1991)

My first impression was that Manzu is the illegitimate brother of Monsieur Hulot ( Jacques Tati). On the left there is Manzu and on the right Monsieur Hulot… there is certainly a resemblance.

But nothing of this, Giacomo Manzu  ( Giacomo Manzoni) is a typical Fifties Italian sculptor. A sculptor who had his conflicts with the fascist government but spent the Forties and early Fifties at teaching positions all over Italy . His latest being one in Brera and Torino ,after which he moved to Salzburg where he married his wife who was modeling for him.

His works are in the most prestigious museum and private collections. Although he was an atheist,] he was a personal friend of Pope John XXIII and had important liturgical commissions for the Vatican. In the United States, architect Minoru Yamasaki commissioned him the Passo di Danza (dance step) sculpture at the One Woodward Avenue building in Detroit. He also carved the Nymph and Faun at Wayne State University’s McGreagor Memorial Sculpture Garden. www.ftn-books.com has some rare Manzu publications available.

Wim Crouwel and the van Abbemuseum

Schermafbeelding 2018-06-11 om 12.20.40

Before Wim Crouwel became the main designer for all publications published by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in in the 60’s, 70’s and early Eighties (TD). There was a short 4 years that he made some beautiful publications for the van Abbemuseum Eindhoven. In these you can recognize the early Wim Crouwel. Size, use of multiple ( colored) papers, typography and layout are all typical for the early Wim Crouwel. www.ftn-books.com is fortunate to have a nice selection of these early WimCrouwel designed publications. Pictures tell a better story than words can . In this case , this certainly true. So here are some nice van Abbemuseum publications by Wim Crouwel.

IJmuider Kring

ijmuider foto

The book that is for sale at www.ftn-books.com is also in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. There are several reasons for it; First the IJmuider Kring is growing more important each year.

Schermafbeelding 2018-06-08 om 15.32.09

Guy Molin made a short 46 min documentary on the IJmuider Kring in 1986 and since art collectors began to realize the importance of the Kring and the importance of the participating artists grew steadily. Who where the participating artist in the IJMUIDER KRING:

Pieter Defesche, Gerard van den Eerenbeemt, Theo Kuypers, Jon Marten, Lei Molin, Jaap Mooy and Reyer Kras

The foreword in this important book was written by famous dutch author Bert Schierbeek and the publisher Reflex made a wonderful publication on the Kring. Worth collecting , hence the objectnumber. in the Stedelijk Museum collection.

Pop Art exhibitions in the Low Countries.

According to my information the first large scale Pop Art exhibitions in the Netherlands took place in 1964. With it was the famous Wim Crouwel designed catalogue published with the upper right corner  “folded”.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A spectacular cover and an example for many other designers to follow this and being inspired by this cover for the years to come. Since, other exhibition  followed of which many publications are available at www.ftn-books.com. One other has certainly to be mentioned because it followed in the year after the Stedelijk Museum exhibition took place. In this case POP ART was combined with the French/Belgium wave which followed in the steps of Pop Art, Le NOUVEAU REALISME.

pop art belgie

This way the United States Pop Art mouvement was combined with the European Pop Art artist like Martial Raysse.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Since other Pop Art exhibitions took place all over Europe, but the Netherlands  and Belgium stayed interested in this fascinating art. I remember recent exhibitions in Schiedam, Nijmegen, Kunsthal Rotterdam, Brussels and the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag all being successful, making Pop Art an established art form…Pop Art is here to stay.

Vassilakis Takis (1925)

Schermafbeelding 2018-03-19 om 11.29.49

Day 4 of my “forgotten artists” blogs is devoted to Vassilakis Takis. Now 92 years of age, but forgotten by most. It used to be different because in the 60’s his name was quite known among art lovers , specially the one interested in Kinetic art. His Grec origins never showed in his works , no classical sculptures for him, but investigating the relations between art and science, resulting in Kinetic works which were original. Still he never became the household name as others from his generation have become. No Soto, Staudt or Agam stature for Takis, but he had his moments in art, which resulted in some nice and very hard to find catalogues. 2 of them available at www.ftnbooks.com. Since the early 1950s, he has been exploring these new aesthetic territories, creating three-dimensional works of art that incorporate invisible energies as a fourth, active element. Takis, who describes himself as an “instinctive scientist,” employs powerful, elemental forces to generate the forms, movements, and musical sounds of both his static and kinetic works but never became famous for his kinetic art and that is a pity, because his approach is original, which resulted in somne nice works of which some of them are in some pubic collections ( mainly in France).
