Luciano Fabro at Christian Stein, 1988

Schermafbeelding 2019-12-10 om 09.44.42

Christian Stein was the preferred location for Fabro to present his latest works on a regular basis.

Fabro was born in Turin, so this was a natural choice , and he moved to Udine, in the Friuli region after his father’s death. He was influenced by artists such as Yves Klein, and Lucio Fontana; he was also close to the artists involved in Azimut, such as Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani. In 1958, after he saw Lucio Fontana’s work at Venice Biennale, Fabro moved to Milan where he spent the rest of his life pursuing his artistic career.

Fabro was involved in the Arte Povera group, which was interested in experimenting with industrial and natural materials, focusing on process, language and the body. Fabro’s best known works were sculptural reliefs of Italy made out of glass, steel, bronze, gold and even soft leather. The signature unorthodox, ‘poor’ materials in his works include steel tubes, cloth, newspapers, and wax;[3] the artist, however, often used also traditional and expensive art materials such as gold, marble, and bronze.[4]

He died on 22 June 2007 in Milan following a heart attack.

The Stein location presented some wonderful works and together with these exhibitions some great art related material was produced. Here is the invitation for the 1988 exhibition which is now for sale at www.ftn-books.com. A fold out card with prints on both sides.

Allen Ruppersberg (1944)

Schermafbeelding 2019-06-19 om 15.37.20

Allen Ruppersberg and the Netherlands is a combination which feels natural. It is a little bit the same like with Lawrence Weiner. Both were supported by Willem Sandberg and had their first major exhibitions outside the US in the Stedelijk Museum and after?……they kept a strong link with the Netherlands since both were represented by the Art & Project gallery who published with both important Bulletins within their series of Bulletins. Both these artists are considered by many as the next worldwide greatest, since Conceptual Art is becoming more and more important in time and admiration for these two is growing significantly.

I like both , but perhaps i more have a weakness for Weiner since his work at the Gemeentemuseum was present all the time i was working there and it never stopped impressing me. But Ruppersberg….. certainly a close second and perhaps in the long run i will like him even more. www.ftn-books.com has soem of the mentioned Ruppersberg items still available.

Paul Citroen (1896-1983)

Schermafbeelding 2020-02-28 om 14.30.03At one time , many years ago, i was living in Wassenaar. Me and my ex wife had a small apartment in a newly build apartment building and just around the corner there was a “classic” dutch house. I learned that Paul Citroen , the dutch Bauhaus artist lived there. I know the drawings by Citroen, because i had seen them at Pulchri Studio, but what i learned many years later was that he was influenced by Bauhaus and was one of the great collage artists. I

t was an aspect of his work that i had never known before but was very appealing to me. It was the extra layer i was looking for in his art. Where his drawinsg and photographs were very personal and recognizable, his collages were inspired by his fellow artists at the Bauhaus. Since i i always remember Paul Citroen when i pass his old house and remember the great art he stands for.

I recently added an intriguing book from 1957 in which drawings and photographs by and on Paul Citroen are depicted.

Tom Heerschop (1972)

Schermafbeelding 2020-02-25 om 15.55.21

Already at an early age, some people know what they are about. Not what they want to become, but what they are. Tom draws. He has been drawing all his life. His source is life itself. His work flows from his hand. It cleans the grit from his veins. It sweeps along his body. He is at its mercy.

For his drawings, Tom uses many different formats. He always works on paper and with a diversity of drawing materials: pen, pencil, paint, ink, marker. The stream of work that pours from his hands marks the intensity with which Tom experiences and perceives life. With head, hands and heart.

This how the text starts at the Tom Heerschop site. A very nice site which shows the qualities in which he excels. Drawing is his second nature.

https://www.tomheerschop.nl

The reason why i visited his site and was impressed was the recent acquisition of a METIS publication on Heerschop. Edition of only 500 copies and available at www.ftn-books.com and please take a look at the Heerschop site for yourself.

Rodney Graham (1949)

Schermafbeelding 2020-02-25 om 15.39.37

Recently i encountered some works by Rodney Graham at the Voorlinden Museum near Wassenaar. Graham depicts himself in situations where he acts the main role. His works are a bit like the ones by Cindy Sherman, but less bizar. Everything in his photographs is specially made for the photograph and built exactly according to the specifications of the artist. This reminded me of the latest photographs by Erwin Olaf who’s compositions were built according to a specific plan by one of the masters of this kind of setup…Floris Vos.

Rodney Graham is a Canadian Conceptual Artist who’s works belong to the Vancouver School. His photographs are extremely large , staged and tell a story of their own.

www.ftn-books.com has some nice Rodney Graham books available .

Daan van Golden and Mick Jagger

Schermafbeelding 2020-02-24 om 15.24.38

At first sight an unlikely combination for the dutch Pop Art artist Daan van Golden. Still…van Golden made an hommage to Mick Jagger in 1967. The silkscreen was printed in an edition of 10 copies and is now sought after as being one of the most iconic of his works. It is a large silkscreen measuring 123 x 106 cm. and this copy of the Stadscollectie Rotterdam was acquired at the famous dDelta gallery who was at that time the representing gallery of van Golden. The image of the silkscreen was used in 1988 for the cover of the book published on the occasion of the presentation of the Stadscollectie Rotterdam . This book is now available at www.ftn-books.com.

Julia Aventura (1952) ….continued

Schermafbeelding 2020-02-24 om 15.12.33

Since my latest blog on Julia Ventura i took a personal interest in her works and acquired some more nice publications for my personal library. Among them there is the Museu Serralves publication which was published in cooperation with the Kroller Muller Museum. It is a true Retrospective p book which covers works from 1982 until 2003. I have put it on my shelf until i recently discovered another copy on my local bookmarket. I bought this too and concluded once again that Ventura her art is very personal indeed and of the highest quality. From now on i will be on the look out for any of her works that will appear at auction. From this moment i will offer this second copy at www.ftn-books.com. I truly can recommend this one.
