VIII Bienal 65 at Sao Paulo by Jurriaan Schrofer

Schermafbeelding 2021-01-14 om 16.31.06

For many years this was the last time a dutch group of artists presented diutch art at the Sao Paulo Bienal exhibition. For several reasons the Bienal was boycotted and only in the late Eighties dutch art was presented once again at the Sao Paulo Bienal.

But the reason for this blog is not the presence of dutch art in SAo Paulo….no….. the reason is that this 1965 catalogue for the dutch pavillion was designed by Jurriaan Schrofer, who made this catalogue a very special one. The idea came from a leporello in which each fold contains a small catalogue. The artists present are for the official contribution: Co Westerik adnPeter Vos and for the special room: Melle, Carel Willink, Charles Roelofsz and Pyke Koch.

Schrofer managed to include all these artist in a very special way in this catalogue in which all the artists received their own small book. Cover design is special too in which the title spirals away….I really am a great fan of this catalogie which is now available at www.ftn-books.com.

Rodney Graham (1949)

Recently i encountered some works by Rodney Graham at the Voorlinden Museum near Wassenaar. Graham depicts himself in situations where he acts the main role. His works are a bit like the ones by Cindy Sherman, but less bizar. Everything in his photographs is specially made for the photograph and built exactly according to the specifications of the artist. This reminded me of the latest photographs by Erwin Olaf who’s compositions were built according to a specific plan by one of the masters of this kind of setup…Floris Vos.

Rodney Graham is a Canadian Conceptual Artist who’s works belong to the Vancouver School. His photographs are extremely large , staged and tell a story of their own.

http://www.ftn-books.com has some nice Rodney Graham books available .

Erwin Olaf special 1:1 by Floris Vos

It has been some years ago that there was an exhibition by Erwin Olaf. The sets/ stage design was done by Floris Vos who recently died. Floris Vos was important to Erwin Olaf since the staging of his photographs is so important and a part which makes his photographs recognizable and stand out. Every detail counts and the result is a photograph which is truly remarkable. Of course the talent of Erwin Olaf is undoubtedly present in every photograph he takes, but the staging by Floris Vos will be missed in the future. I dare to say that the future Olaf photographs will be different and that is probably not a bad thing, because now Olaf must use a different set director, which means different photographs for sure and taking a new road into the staged photography he excels in.
