Guillaume Le Roy a Triptych

Schermafbeelding 2018-04-04 om 12.04.10

Just a short story how i found the Triptych by Guillaume Le Roy. I have been impressed by the graphic art of Guillaume Le Roy for over 15 years now. Since i began visiting specialized book auctions, i found that his works were offered on some occasions. In the beginnig i was not interested in buying them , but some 10 years ago i bought my first ” lot” which included 4 large prints ( ca. 120 x 80 cm). I began to admire his techniques and his compositions were fascinating to look at.

This was the beginning of a small collection of works by Le Roy. His black and /white ( now some are for sale at ftn art ) prints showed within the limit of the use of only black and white so many detail and shades that come alive as soon as you put them on a wall. So far the earliest of history on Le Roy and me as a collector.

2 years ago , at the november sale of which i could not visit the viewing days,  my interest was raised in the catalogue when i saw a description of an item that looked to be an early print by Guillaume Le Roy. The description was not that clear but i recognized his graphic signature. I placed a written bid and i won the item…… picked it up at the auctionhouse and discovered it was a genuine Guillaume Le Roy . …. a Triptych.

Two folding panels covered on both sides with etchings and in the middle another 2 etchings. In total 6 etchings and another discovery….it was signed, numbered and dated. very hard to discover the signature, but it was there , together with the other edition information ( see the photograph with the item).

One problem, i do not have the place to present it properly, so decided to put it up for sale and now it is available for the true admirer who values and cherishes Le Roy works too.

galerie Nouvelles Images…”the end”

A few days ago it was a shock for me to learn that gallery Nouvelles Images will close its doors permanently. This gallery has been a long time institution in the dutch art world and one of the galleries that gave direction to the dutch art world. Ton Berends and later on Erik Bos were visionary gallery owners that meant a lot to the young artists and because of their influence opened doors to museums and foreign galleries. Beside that they were great art dealers who presented and represented many artists for the very first time in the Netherlands and on art shows.

I visited the gallery dozens of times and i always enjoyed the spacious rooms. My personal favorites were of course Dirkx, van Hemert, Geurts and Willem Hussem who’s heirs they have  represented for more than 30 years now. Nouvelles Images will not exist any more in the near future. So take a look at a great art institution in The Hague while you can. The gallery will close on the 1st of October 2018.

www.ftn-books.com has many Nouvelles Images available

Piet Dirkx….and now for something completely….special.

Schermafbeelding 2018-04-04 om 12.22.34

Readers following the “Piet Dirkx daily” know of my admiration for Piet’s his work.

We now have had over 600 cigarboxes and another 300 works to come. Among them cigarboxes, large paintings on wood and works on paper. Within the last category you will find the special of today. Piet made in 2005 some drawings/ gouaches to be sold in the shop of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and yes….i bought 3 of them and because i can only hang 2 from those three, i decided to sell the one that is still in one of my drawers.

Piet Dirkx, compositie, 2005
Piet Dirkx, compositie, 2005

It is certainly not the least out of those three and because if had first pick from the set which was to be sold i chose what i think were the best. Here it is …..A drawing like a series of open books and buildings, with a typical Piet Dirks mouth drawn in pencil upon them. Colorful, detailed and executed on perfectly square paper . It is the ideal Piet Dirkx composition upon a limited surface. (29,8 x 29,8 cm.)

Herman de Vries/ Random Shapes cat. 578

This is one of those catalogues that has become famous. When i started collecting Stedelijk Museum catalogues some 20 years ago. The first “lot” i bought contained 2 of these and my first thought was….who in the world is interested in these catalogues, but his has changed over the years. 2 reasons….

1st. Herman de Vries has become one of the most important artists since he first presented his works in the Stedelijk Museum.

2nd. What i did not realize at that time, but which is realized by many nowadays is that these catalogues were not a catalogue at all, but true multiples that were published on the occasion af an exhibition. Among them, Soto, Hamilton, Paolozzi, Arp, Calder and…. certainly this RANDOM SHAPES by Herman de Vries.

It was published with no 578 and contained a white cover which contained a see through envelope containing the Random shapes by de Vries a6 page folder with explanation in dutch made it complete.

The Random Shapes has become iconic for the Stedelijk Museum catalogues and finally after a long time i managed to find me another copy which is available at www.ftn-books.com

Gerard Petrus Fieret / 2 drawings

Schermafbeelding 2018-04-01 om 13.41.09

It was years ago that i bought a poetry book by Gerard Pedtrus Fieret and found 2 drawings from 1982 by him within. The drawings are rapid sketches as he now and then made for friends. These 2 sketches were done for Jopie. I do not know who Jopie is , but in both is a woman depicted so i think Jopie was a female friend of Fieret. Both these drawings are now for sale at ftn art. In the near future i will publish some  “Bierviltjes”and letters i have in my collection. These drawings and letters were written to a friend of mine and are an important piece of Fieret history. But now the 2 drawings by Fieret.

Janusz Haka (1951)

Schermafbeelding 2018-03-27 om 14.32.15

I first heard of Janusz Haka when i received an invitation in 1980 by the Jurka gallery in Amsterdam. They held an exhibition with the polish artist Janusz Haka. Since the list of his exhibitions is a very very long one and because of his subjects his art was appreciated in many places all over the world. I would say that his art has influences of Walasse Ting and Leroy Neiman, but Haka is as original as the ones just mentioned. His style is recognizable and his paintings have in most cases an erotic element but never offend. His paintings are appreciated by both men and women and because of the many colorful elements these are joyful accessible paintings. FTN art is now selling one of these majestic large oils on paper. It is the one which was modelled after “l’origine du monde” by Manet.

Arie van Geest (1948)

Schermafbeelding 2018-03-25 om 12.13.21

Without realizing i have collected a beautiful small collection with works by Arie van Geest. Born in Maasland he stayed in the region and had several studios in Rotterdam. The friendship with Pat Andrea shows in his early works which were a little surreal, but in the mid eighties he changed in the approach of his painting. His works became abstract with realistic elements and that is the time i met Arie and bought my first drawing. Together with Mariette Josephus Jitta, as the curator in charge, he made the Tableau Mourant exhibition in which 98 watercolors were shown. This series was later bought by the van Gogh Museum. For the exhibition in the Gemeentemuseum 2 editions were made. One “ordinary edition” designed by Paul Stoute and the other a linnen bound one, with a drawing/watercolor by van Geest.

The style changed dramatically and personally i prefer this “new” Arie van Geest above his more realistic style. He stayed loyal to this new found abstract style for almost 20 years and changed again to a more a realistic way of painting in 2002. All three periods are important, but when you look at the museums that bought Arie van Geest ( Gemeentemuseum, Stedelijk Museum, Boymans van Beuningen ) , They all made their acquisitions in the abstract period, except for the Athens Museum which made purchases from his most recent period. Arie van Geest was represented by Delta Gallery. He now has frequent shows with Livingstone gallery.  I have decided to sell part of my Arie van Geest works, so please have a look at FTN art and for the book related material visit www.ftn-books.com

Dick Cassee (1931)

Schermafbeelding 2018-02-25 om 15.17.05

Try to find a biography on Dick Cassee and you will not find it. I found some information through the documentation site of art in Overijssel, but no biography, no site, no museum information, no exhibitions …..nothing! But Cassee is an important dutch artist from the sixties and seventies and his art was really avant-garde at that time. It was recognized as important for many dutch museum too, because they started to follow this artist and made some purchases. Among them, the van Abbemuseum, Stedelijk Museum and the Haags Gemeentemuseum. What makes his work characteristic . is the continuous bend line in his compositions. Making abstract city scapes and skylines.

Others form landscapes and again later works are a combination off al these together. His works fascinate me and because i recently encountered a work at auction and could buy it for ftn art, i started to search for information on Cassee…..none to be found… his artistic life is now still a mystery to me, but i have decided to put the work i bought up for sale at FTN art. Here it is .

title : VENASCLE, from 1975 in an edition of 60 numbered and signed copies.

Tomitaro Nachi (1924-2007)

nachi cata f

Tomitaro Nachi was one of the first japanese artist ever to have an exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum. Wim Crouwel designed the catalogue for his exhibition and what makes it extra special is that the catalogue included a rare and beautiful multiple. There is wonderful short movie about this artist which was made at the time of his exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in 1974.

The catalogue shines. It is like a minimal artist book and reflects the spirit of “Zero” and Kinetic art and was forgotten by most until recently it was sold at a local book auction and fetched a steep price of euro 120,– because it had the original multiple included. www.ftn-books.com has both copies available. The one with and the one without the multiple. Both are worth collecting, but as lng as it is there i would chose the one with the multiple included.
