Ko Verzuu (continued)

Renowned designer Ko Verzuu (1901-1971) was a man of technical origins, which was evident in his intricate and masterfully crafted wooden toy designs for ADO between 1925-1962. Produced in the workshops at Berg and Bosch hospital, his toys were heavily influenced by the “de Stijl” movement promoted by Gerrit Rietveld during that time. The use of primary colors, clean lines, and simplicity were notable characteristics that could be seen in the ADO toys, such as the elegant wooden bank depicted above – a perfect representation of Verzuu’s eclectic style.

Designed with playability and practicality in mind, Verzuu tested his creations on his 11 children to ensure they were the finest wooden toys around. This level of dedication and attention to detail can also be seen in the limited edition BESTELDIENST bank featured in this blog. Only 250 copies were made, each with a certificate of authenticity, making it a prestigious and highly sought-after collectible. The project was a testament to ADO’s expertise and history in producing unparalleled wooden toys, which they showcased in a “prestige” project over 25 years ago.

This magnificent piece was meticulously handmade and painted, with each numbered and signed by the artist. A yellow edition consisting of only 50 copies was specially made for the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, while the blue and yellow version shown here was made in an edition of 250 copies. Unfortunately, the production of all ADO school furniture and other products came to a halt 12 years ago, effectively putting an end to future ADO projects. Fortunately, FTN was able to acquire the remaining stock of these exquisite toys, including the banks, beetles (which will be discussed in a future blog), and the BESTELDIENST. These last copies, complete with an original ADO box, certificate, and in mint condition, can now only be found at www.ftn-books.com. Don’t miss the opportunity to add these highly collectible pieces to your collection at a reasonable price before they’re gone for good.

www.ftn-books.com has some highly collevctable Verzuu designs available.

Thijs Rinsema (1877-1947)

Thijs Rinsema, a cobbler from Drachten, a town in the Frisian region, gained recognition as a prominent member of the famous art movement De Stijl. His work was displayed at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Tate Modern in London.

The Museum Drachten is hosting the first major retrospective exhibition of Thijs Rinsema’s (1877-1947) work. The exhibition also pays tribute to his equally exceptional brother, Evert Rinsema (1880-1958). Additionally, the Museum Belvédère in Heerenveen has a small exhibition featuring Thijs’ Stijl furniture pieces and some of his paintings.

These craftsmen are skilled in creating perfect pairs of shoes with a piece of leather, but they are also well-read and have an interest in philosophy and modern art. Thijs paints while Evert writes and, during his military service, gets to know the artist Theo van Doesburg. This encounter opens up a whole new world for the brothers.

Thijs is deeply moved by De Stijl and, in the early 1920s, transforms his shop and living room. To the amazement of the people of Drachten, these spaces are adorned with the primary colors of the art movement: white walls with yellow, red, and blue accents. It becomes an incredible sight to behold.

Rinsema is already painting at this time. He learns to paint by imitating medieval art as well as works by modern artists like Picasso and Kandinsky. Following Van Doesburg’s advice, he begins creating still lifes and portraits. “Family, neighbors, and acquaintances are all subject to his artistry,” writes Thijs Rinsema’s grandson in his study ‘Thijs and Evert Rinsema, Independent and Versatile’.

Posing for Thijs is a challenge. The cobbler-painter works slowly, and customers in the shop disrupt the process. “Naturally, they all found it quite peculiar in Drachten,” says Thijs’ grandson. However, the eccentric cobbler is unperturbed and enjoys his newfound status.

In 1923, the Dadaist Kurt Schwitters visits Drachten. Van Doesburg had written to him about two remarkable individuals in Friesland, which Schwitters finds fascinating. At the round table in the Stijl room, he creates collages with Thijs using newspaper clippings, leaves, and advertising materials. These collages, now worth a fortune, are displayed at the exhibition.

The pinnacle of their friendship is a gathering in 1923 in a hall at a local hotel. Schwitters performs and recites his poems, one of which is in the Frisian language. He also presents his famous sound-image poem with the lines: “We strive to remain w88888” (referring to the town name Dr8888 – Drachten). Thus, Drachten becomes forever connected to Dada.
www.ftn-books.com has 2 important publications on Rinsema now available.

Erwin Olaf and Eduard Manet… an analogy

Schermafbeelding 2020-11-16 om 10.08.14

A few weeks ago i decided to sell my pristine copy of the Borek Sipek / Erwin Olaf catalogue they made together with Irma Boom for the STIJL VORMT FUNCTIE exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in 1991. This is probably one of the catalogues i cherish the most, but since i have decided to sell part of my private library and only keep these books that are related to our personal collection it is now for sale. What struck me most were of course the photographs by Erwin Olaf. These are timeless and highly original in their approach of the subject…..except…. he must have been inspired by at least one painting of the impressionist period. The Eduard Manet / The bar at the Folies Bergere painting is certainly a source of inspiration for the photo het took in the early Nineties. The book is now for sale at www.ftn-books.com

Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart (1899-1962)

Schermafbeelding 2019-08-13 om 13.28.51

Beside the spectacular constructivist paintings Friedrich Vordemberg-Gildewart made, there is another aspect in his art life what made him special and important. FVG was the first artist who made abstract paintings throughout his entire career. At first glance his work is related to Mondriaan, de Stijl and Malewich, but look at it more careful and you notice that there is mus more space within the paintings. A way of painting which makes the painting seem less crowded. It is the way i like a painting to intrigue

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart was born in Osnabrück, Germany and studied architecture, interior design and sculpture at Hanover School of Art and the Technical College, Hanover. In 1924 he formed the abstract art group Gruppe K in Hanover with Hans Nitzschke and joined Der Sturm in Berlin. After meeting Theo van Doesburg, Kurt Schwitters and Hans Arp, he became a member of De Stijl in 1925. Together with Kurt Schwitters and Carl Buchheister he formed the ‘Abstrakten Hannover’ group in 1927. He was a member of a number of other artistic groups including: the Cercle et Carré, 1930, Paris and was a founding member of Abstraction-Création (1931), also in Paris. In 1937, in Munich, the Nazi regime exposed his works in the infamous Degenerate Art exhibition. Most of his works were confiscated and he was forced to leave Germany for the Netherlands.

there is a very special Bottrop publication from 1980 available at www.ftn-books.com, which contains 3 silkscreen prints by FVG.

Piet Mondriaan, studio Rue du Départ

Piet Mondriaan was famous for his studios he occupied in Paris and New York and his Paris studio at the Rue du Départ was even a subject for a special exhibition at the Beurs van Berlage who had it rebuild in their main hall in 1994.

With the exhibition they produced together with the Benschop architects an impressive model kit of the studio, which even contains some of the paintings Mondriaan made in this famous studio. During the Nineties some of the DE STIJL icons were produced in Model Kit versions ( Meudon, Rietveldhuis) but this is probably the rarest of them al, since i understand it was not sold, but only presented to the sponsor and its relations. Now for sale at www.ftn-books.com

Thijs Rinsema (1877-1947)

Schermafbeelding 2019-03-18 om 16.36.50

This Frysian artist is by most known for his DADA works he made in te beginning of his career, but he searched for a much wider appreciation and therefore changed his style into a much more figurative style.

Far less interesting, but probably a necessary step to survive as an artist. I looked into the history of Rinsema and found some interesting works which are still exhibited in the Museums in the Northern Provinces of the Netherlands, but the best exhibition was held a long time ago at the Nijmeegs Museum in 1972 for which exhibition an excellent catalogue was published , designed by Harrie Gerritz who found a loyal following of admirers soon after for his playfulk and colourful abstract compositions. This catalogue is available at ww.ftn-books.com

This catalogue is a cclassic for the Sixties and Seventies with sobre style, minimalistic designdoes it stand as a great dutch design.

de Stijl catalogue ( 1951 ) by Willem Sandberg

Schermafbeelding 2018-09-04 om 15.21.26.png

I have copies of this 1951 catalogue for sale at www.ftn-books.com for a very long time now and whenever i have a copy available it is rapidly sold, but the one i have at this moment is very special ( please inquire). It is the same book/catalogue from 1951 as the other ones i had, but it has some extra’s that none of the copies i had before had. It contains the original folder ( it is possibly designed by Willem Sandberg) in which the separate rooms in the Stedelijk are described and 2 pages of stencilled texts on de Stijl. I have never seen the folder before and it must be one of the extremely rare Stedelijk Museum collectibles. To my knowledge this makes this package the only complete publication package on the very Special de STIJL 1951 exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Otto Hamer (1938)…The Killing of Desire

Schermafbeelding 2018-05-10 om 15.00.06

Never heard of the artist before, but what a great find this is. People following the blog know that concrete and constructivist artists are among my favorites. Last week i visited the bookmarket and found an intriguing title ” OTTO HAMER : Mijnheer I.KAA EN DE KUNST” leafing through the book i noticed immediately why his art fascinates me personally . The repetitions of form(s), the use of bright colors and the feel for composition “hit” me. The book itself was a surprise too. Beautiful lay-out, excellent print quality . Designed by Otto Hamer himself together with Aernout Tas this is a highly  accomplished book. To give an impression of Hamer’s work here is the Youtube video i found:

There is not much info to be found on the artist, but i found an article in dutch:

Otto Hamer

and some photo material of his studio and works. In the coming months i will try to find more information, but for the meantime you can start with the sites supplied.

Villa Henny (1919) by Robert van ‘t Hoff

There is DE STIJL in the Netherlands , Arts, poetry and architecture were all executed along linear ways. Where Mondrian used the rectangle. Robert van ‘t Hoff exeuted his architectural along the same disciplines as the other artist of the DE STIJL group. It shows…. a little bit inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright this is one of the best dutch early architectural designs there is. The Rietveld Schroder Huis in Utrecht is more DE STIJL, but this one is far more beautiful. There are publications on DE STIJL and Rietveld available at www.ftn-books.com and since a few weeks there is the classic building cardboard kit by Piet Vollaard available too. Published by Uitgeverij 010 in the mid eighties this is a highly collectable item.
