Mario Ceroli (1938)

Schermafbeelding 2018-10-11 om 16.20.14

This is what his site says about the artist:

Mario Ceroli is one of the most important representatives of contemporary art in Italy.  As an eclectic artist, sculpture, designer, architect, painter and scenographer, he has been able to transform, during his long career, such powerful raw material as wood in breathtaking one of a kind art pieces. Born in 1938 in a small town of the province of Chieti, Italy, he moved for the first time to Rome in the early 60’s. This was the emerging period of the pop art in Italy; a motivating moment of the traditional contemporary art in which he distinguished himself with his capacity to combine tradition with modern. Mario’s creativity runs from reinterpreting famous art to creating new open spaces, furnishing theatrical plays to the realization of great sculptures en plein air including references to material reality and symbolic figures. Ceroli recognized, other than his masterpieces, as a pioneer in starting a wave of expression in art and demonstrating with a strong conviction that experimenting with new materials is the beginning of professional growth in a real artist.

His great artistic talent allows him to obtain from natural elements such as wood, glass, earth and ice, a blend of geometrical figures, inlaids, marvellous works that can be only created by a master mind.  When Ceroli talks about wood, he states, “It’s the only material that allows me to right away give form to my imagination and ideas; it’s from the material that the images jump out of me”.

Ceroli known in the world especially for his horses, sculpted in bronze and wood, symbolizing salvation and aspiration, the founder one is the bronze horse that we can find in the middle of the Rai Headquarters in Rome. Although he is at the top of contemporary art in Italy, his work also mirrors the research of “The Beautiful Ideal” from Winckelmann in the late XVIII century. With the unusual form that his sculpted furniture takes place, you can perceive the presence of the metaphysic paintings of Giorgio De Chirico in such way that it actually honors him.  Ceroli’s art offers a one of a kind esthetic experience; an encounter between past and present and a total immersion in beauty.

Please visit his site, because it is well worth your visit:

Furniture catalogues…. impressive and highly collectable

furniture cat a

Many of you have sometime in their lives took home a furniture catalogue. No, not the one from IKEA  or Habitat, but one from one of the more prestigious designers like Vitra, Herman Miller, Alessi, Foscarelli or Cassina. These are the ones that matter and because they have almost unlimited funds for promotion at their sisposal their catalogues belong to the very best. The best photographers, designers and printers are selected and with them they make beautiful timeless books/catalogues/editions for their products. Even better….because they are just promotional material many of these are lost or replaced making them scarce and highly collectable items. To start a collection ….just visit your local furnituer mall, selct the best store with the most prestigious furniture name and ask them for some product catalogues so you can do your choosing at home. My guess is you will leave the store with a bundle of catalogues and have started your own collection. Beside these free publications some of these companies have their own line of publications. One of them is Cassina who have produced several prestigious books on their products and designers over the decades. www.ftn-books.com has the ones on Le Corbusier and Mackintosh now for sale.

Josef Albers Museum / Quadrat Bottrop and its amazing poster publications.

It must have been in december some eight years ago that me, my wife and Ellis my sister in law decided to make a small detour to Bottrop after vsiting the Alsace region. When we arrived there were were impressed by the surroundings of the museum. a park and a sculpture garden next door to the museum building itself. Of coursse we came over there to see the Josef Albers paintings, but after the visit we started to see what wonderful items the bookshop was selling. Among them….posters, special prints and Josef Albers furniture.

I bought the posters , because they were there for sale in all sorts of appearances. Specila prints, silks screened, signed and even limited editions and they were not exported or could not be ordered only bought on site. That is the reason why we returned one year later and i bought more of them. Making them a substantial part of my inventory. Most of them are sold out now, but i am fortunate to be able to offer them. These are among the very best exhibition poster sin the world by some of the grewatest names in Art today. Willem Hendrik Gispen (1890-1981)

Schermafbeelding 2017-08-31 om 15.06.53

Sometimes when you search on the large WWW and try to find some information on an artist or subject it is hard to find a site with a good clean design, filled with sensible information and a joy to visit. Of course you must first look at www.ftn-books.com for books on Gispen, but after you have done just that…. please visit http://www.whgispen.nl

This site gives the best possible insight in Gispen and his works, unfortunately only in dutch, but the designs speak for themselves. Gispen is one of the true inventors of dutch design, being one of the first to design furniture out of tubular frames and making them suitable for offices and home interiors. The result is that many dutch families know of Gispen, because they lived their lives among Gispen furniture, but never knew the story of its designer. Please visit the Gispen site and do not forget that www.ftn-books.com has some nice books on Gispen.

Kho Liang Ie ( 1927-1975) and dutch design

Schermafbeelding 2017-05-09 om 11.12.16

It was the late 50’s and early sixties that a new generation of dutch designers stood up and almost all of them have been of great influence on corporate, furniture and book design all over the world. Kho LIang Ie was one of them. Less known than Sandberg and Crouwel , but still one who’s influence on design is still there. As i understand Pastoe is still making his couch C653, but not only furniture was designed by Kho Lian Ie.

Architect, designer and glass artist. Bořek Šípek sipek was  one of the leading artist in the eighties and influenced many young artist . Named the father of Neo Baroque and  together with the designers of Memphis Bořek Šípek he first became famous for his glass designs. He was presented in the Netherlands by galerie Steltman and it was at one of the first exhibitions held in the gallery that i met the artist. The interior furniture in the Steltman gallery , (Spuistraat location), was specially commissioned by Steltman and some of those were produced in a very small limited editions. This  was the start of the exhibitions by Steltman resulting in many more exhibitions and over 200 signed and numbered editions. On more than one occasion Sipek worked together with Erwin Olaf who at that time started to make a name as a photographer and this friendship resulted in some remarkable books.

Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971)

Danish design…Hot in the sixties and now timeless in 21th century. If you look at Danish design over the last 70 years you conclude one thing and that is these Danisg designers are masters with plywood. This technology of molding wood is also used by Ray and Charles Eames, but for me Arne Jacobsen is the greatest. He made so many beautiful and classic designs, one could wish one had a bigger house to show all this beautiful furniture.

But beside furniture Jacobsen had another discipline in which he excelled….architecture

also simple and beautiful  and because these architectural designs are not extravagant they are truly timeless like his furniture is. In the 50’s this true artist met Willem Sandberg and resulted in an excellent exhibition which was organized by the Stedelijk Museum in 1959. Accompanied by a typical and one of the best Sandberg designed catalogues from the Fifties. books available at www.ftn-books.com

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976)… a multi talent

schermafbeelding-2017-01-11-om-13-47-44
Alvar Aalto

First tine i ever heard of Alvar Aalto was when i bought a vase for my wife….design by Alvar Aalto. When i got further read on and got acquainted with the person Aalto i noticed that he was a tremendous architect and a great furniture designer . That is the time i started collecting the books on Aalto and in the last decades i built a great collection of books for myself. When you are such an avid collector it happens once in a while that encounter a book which you already have in your collection and these books were the first to appear in my own store at www.ftn-books.com

( look at the similarities between the shape of the vase and the buildings)

Through the years i visited, whenever in the neighbourhood, the architectural masterpieces by Aalto in Germany, but never had the chance to go to Finland where the main part of his buildings is to be found. Maybe in the future, but in the meantime i have my Aalto books.

So check my store when you are collecting Aalto or architectural books and maybe you can complete your collection with the ones on offer.
