A few weeks ago my American friend David, wrote in a Facebook post that he truly enjoyed the classic PARADE movie by Charles and Ray Eames. Although i am a great fan of the Eames couple. I never had heard of these stop motion/animated movies and immediately opened the link . Ok…. it is not the greatest of stop motion movies that ihave seen, but it is charming and one can see that the Eames couple is trying to find a way to make this work. Music is typical for the US, a de Sousa march is backing up the movements of the figures, making this PARADE a highly enjoyable short movie”
Parade was filmed by Charles and Ray in 1952. It is a live-action pageant of mechanical toys, animals, puppets, cars, lead soldiers, and dolls–all set into motion, with colorful toy buildings and photographic and painted images of city streets used as backdrops. Hugh De Pree, the former CEO of @hermanmiller, recalls spending the night at the Eames Office, helping Charles, Ray, and Billy Wilder, wind up toys for the film until 3 AM.
Cassina is one of the most renowned producers of furniture. Together with Herman Miller and Vitra they are the top in furniture design and all are producing new and proven classics in the best way possible. What makes these producers also stand out is the meticulous way in which they produce their furniture catalogues. Excellent designs and print quality by the best designers and printers. This way of making catalogues , designing and producing catalogues for their products makes these catalogues highly desirable and collectable items.
It is always worthwile to pick these up ( for free ) when you have the chance and if you want to complete your collection , know that http://www.ftn-books.com has some of these catalogues still available.
At one time Pieter Brattinga and Henry Miller spoke about the graphic designs and specially the “KWADRAAT bladen” Brattinga made. Miller responded that he would love to participate in the project and promised to make something special for the series….and so he did in 1967. The Kwadraat series , printed by Steendrukkerij de Jong , published in 1967…extra mailing Written Language. A portfolio containing 4 watercolors by Henry Miller. 3 double paged ones and one title page. This rare and highly collectible publication is now available at www.ftn-books.com
Many of you have sometime in their lives took home a furniture catalogue. No, not the one from IKEA or Habitat, but one from one of the more prestigious designers like Vitra, Herman Miller, Alessi, Foscarelli or Cassina. These are the ones that matter and because they have almost unlimited funds for promotion at their sisposal their catalogues belong to the very best. The best photographers, designers and printers are selected and with them they make beautiful timeless books/catalogues/editions for their products. Even better….because they are just promotional material many of these are lost or replaced making them scarce and highly collectable items. To start a collection ….just visit your local furnituer mall, selct the best store with the most prestigious furniture name and ask them for some product catalogues so you can do your choosing at home. My guess is you will leave the store with a bundle of catalogues and have started your own collection. Beside these free publications some of these companies have their own line of publications. One of them is Cassina who have produced several prestigious books on their products and designers over the decades. www.ftn-books.com has the ones on Le Corbusier and Mackintosh now for sale.
A theme which inspired many artists through the ages. Of course in the 16th century dutch painters were known for their landscapes with water and skies, but water and sky remained important for all the centuries that came afterwards. Even M.C. Escher used in his prints these themes frequently and not long ago this theme was used on a scarf by Cordon Art to show the importance of the work. In the seventies Wim Crouwel made several catalogues for the Stedelijk Museum with this theme and one i admire most is the one to accompany the exhibition by artists Miller and Cameron who used the theme of sky and water in their exhibition . Boymans van Beuningen presented Lucy and Jorge Orta who presented their waterwerken and finally there is the one who is known to practically all Dutch….Anton Pieck who used the theme frequently.
