Tajiri… a double design by Wim Crouwel

tajiri jong b

Part of the inside of both publications is the same. Covers are the same , but here comes the difference. Backcovers are different and there are less pages in the Steendrukkerij de Jong catalogue. It is clear that Steendrukkerij de Jong used the same design by Wim Crouwel he made for the van Abbemuseum for this iconic Sixties catalogue. But where the van Abbemuseum is scarce, The Steendrukkerij de Jong publication is nowhere to be found anymore. This is probably because it was a simple “handout” publication for the exhibition at the printers. My guess is only a few hundred were printed and this is one of the only surviving ones. The publication is now available at www.ftn-books.com

6 months ago i published a blog on Cas Oorthuys, but since i discovered some more titles in which Oorthuys contributed to the photography. The most important one?  ROTTERDAM…Dynamische stad. 100% filled with great Oorthuys photography. Dated 1959. You can see a city , resurrecting after the WWII bombardment which removed the heart of this great city in the Netherlands. The photographs are all printed full page or spread over 2 pages . Size is almost folio like with 12 x 10.9 inches, linnen bound with gold /relief printing on the cover makes this one of the more important Photography books in my collection. It is availabel at www.ftn-books.com

If you like dutch photography from the 20th century and specially the photography by Cas Oorthuys, you must take a look a the series of books  DE SCHOONHEID VAN ONS LAND , which were published along a general theme, depicting the typical dutch countryside, landscapes, cities , costumes and people of the fifties . The series was published by Contact over a decade. An excellent series with many photographs by Cas Oorthuys who started his career right after WWII and was contracted for this Contact series in the Fifties. Later he would publish many books of which some are available at www.ftn-books.com. His archives with over 500.000 negatives is believed to be one of the largest of any photographer. Oorthuys is a true master of dutch photography.
