Oskar Lens (1930)

This is one of those artist who is hardly known outside the Den Haag region. He knew Nanninga, was a friend of Jan Snoeck and even had a duo exhibition with him at the Museum Jan van der Togt a few years ago.

Personally i am not too familiar with the works by Lens, but when you look at them, you can see some influences of Cobra painting and ….Kees van Bohemen who he must have known from the cafes in Den Haag where the artist gathered  ( de Posthoorn is very well known). Being a member of Pulchri artist studio he regularly had his exhibitions , but it took until 2005 before he had his first major retrospective exhibition at the Jan van der Togt museum . Jan Roëde (1914-2007)

Jan Roëde was a contemporary of Piet Ouborg, Jaap Nanninga and Wim Sinemus, whom he met regularly in The Hague at the cafe DE POSTHOORN.. He was influenced by Miró’s form of abstract Surrealism. His paintings, populated by figures and shapes, are the result of a search for a world of forms that arose from him personally. Abstract or figurative was all the same to him. In fact the process of painting was more important than the forms that came out of it. In the last 2 decades. The Miro liked shaped forms almost disappeared from his painting and in their place came almost childish figures that populated the canvasses from that time on. On many a small bird appeared like a sort of extra signature.

Jan Roede is now part of our collection, since we managed to buy a very nice painting at auction last October. Jan Roëde was married to the sister of Will Leewens another artist which is in our collection and both have in common that during the 70’s and 80’s both sold their work on a regular basis to the Artoteek/HEDEN. This work, like so many others, comes originally from the HEDEN collection.

“Fugare” (1960)

First there was VERVE, later Fugare and finally de Nieuwe Haagse School.

Nowadays dutch art lovers know exactly what is meant by DE NIEUWE HAAGSE SCHOOL. it is a group of artist who lived and worked in Den Haag and met regularly in Pulchris Studio, de Posthoorn and de Haagse Kunstkring. But before this there was FUGARE. this FUGARE society was founded by George Lampe on the 26th of January 1960

The result? an artist mouvement with particpating artist that met regularly and inspired each other and held their exhibitions at the best venues in those days. Exhibitions were held at the Haags Gemeentemuseum, Stedelijk Museum, van Abbemuseum and Pulchri Studio. There was  a place for all in Fugare. Jan van Heel painted figures and Willem Hussem abstract paintings and everything in between was appreciated as long as you were an active member who visited the meetings. Fugare is impiortant for dutch abstract painting and some nice Fugare publications are availabel at www.ftn-books.com

Kees van Bohemen (1928-1985)

Yesterday i mentioned the POSTHOORNGROEP and one of its members was Kees van Bohemen.

I remember that at one time, me and my parents visited a restaurant next door to the Haagse Kunstkring on the Denneweg in Den Haag and my mother told me that at the bar was a famous The Hague artist….Kees van Bohemen. I only knew his name from the paintings i had seen at the Gemeentemuseum, but possibly this was the first time i saw a true artist/painter in the “wild”. I remember he was drinking a beer and never left the bar during our meal. Many years later we met again in the Gemeentemuseum and at that occasion van Bohemen was offering his publications and some prints to be sold at the museumstore of the Gemeentemuseum. We took some of them in consignation and since i have been following his career. Making exhibitions at Pulchri, Kunstkring and Delta gallery it always struck me that his style was typical sixties and highly recognizable. Nowadays you encounter his works at the less prestigious auctions ( Venduehuis and AAG) but this does not mean they are not to be admired, they may not be in a price bracket of the Warhol’s and Basquiat’s, but that is not what art is about. The art of van Bohemen is admirable and deserves to be collected and shown in museums and fortunately many do admire his works. Here are the publications available at www.ftn-books.com

Willem Hussem (1900-1974) and the “Posthoorngroep”

What about these glasses!….it is the first thing you see when you look at this portrait of Willem Hussem, a dutch painter from the Hague who formed together with Nanninga , Roede and Bohemen the core of the “Posthoorngroep”. The met weekly in the famous cafe de Posthoorn where they discussed art and everything else, but most of all inspired each other to some of the greatest art found in the Netherlands in those days, Among them Willem Hussem was perhaps the most diverse ( painting , sculpture and poetry), but certainly one of the most outspoken member of the group. Willem Hussem his works are spread all over the Netherlands in Museums ( Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Stedelijk Museum, Dordrechts museum) and many private collections. Jaap Nanninga (1904-1962)

Jaap Nanninga was born in Winschoten in the north of the Netherlands but after travels to Germany and Poland he settled in Den Haag in 1936, where he stayed and worked his entire life. meber of the famous Posthoorn group het met his friends artist for drinks and dinners at the POSTHOORN cafe at the Voorhout in Den Haag ( and yes…it is still there and serves the finest “Bitterballen” in Den Haag. He received his artist eductaion from Werkman and Wiegers and stayed for a short moment with Geer van Velde in Paris. These 3 artists made Nanninga the artist which we know nowadays. Abstract compositions rooted in the Fifties . a little Cobra mixed with abstract expresionism. Many dutch museum have some great Nanninga’s, but one museum i would like to mention specially is the FIGURA painting in the van Abbemuseum collection. Powerful and typically Fifties abstraction.

Jan Snoeck…world famous in DEN HAAG

If you ask a citizen of THE HAGUE who is Jan Snoeck?…. They probably do not know who he is, but ask if they know about the ceramic statues, they do know them. These statues are spread all over THE HAGUE and trademark works by this artist. Snoeck born in 1927 is one of the great masters who grew up and stayed in THE HAGUE all of his life and has parctically known all of the artists from the POSTHOORN group. Ceramics are what he is known for although he also made some graphic works and paintings. I know Snoeck from his earliest days because at one time a bought a lithograph at Arta in the early 70’s.

And now i am selling the UNICA he has made some 30 years ago

A few months ago i was contacted by a collector who wanted to sell her collection of unique plates and i agreed to help. So these weeks special unique plates by Snoeck are sold through Catawiki and the one that is for sale now can be found here.
