Most art lovers abroad do not know that within a distance of 10km of the Boymans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, another great museum can be found. The museum itself much …much smaller…. but for its collection it deserves to be mentioned beside the Boymans. the STEDELIJK MUSEUM SCHIEDAM has had its collecting focus during the last 30 years on Cobra and The INFORMELEN and Zero art and build a collection which must be visited.
Situated in an old building in the center of Schiedam it is now being renovated to present its Cobra collection in the best way possible. So make a mental note when you are visiting Rotterdam. Threads, rags and tissues, these combined are part of the installations and “paintings” by Seet van Hout. These works are far more complex than one would think when seen for the first time. Hard labour, sewing, broidering and painting the tissues that brought all together, make a new work of art. In many cases a very large work which needs enough space to be admired. Nature and abstract forms are used for the composition and because of the method of “contruction” it must take some time before the work is finished. I noticed that her works are in the largest public and corporate collections, but because of theiir size you seldom come accross one which is for show…. a pity because thes colorful works must be admired by many than the occasional spectator.

This time a double bill of Renato Guttuso and Alan Davie. Two exhibions both held at the Stedelijk Museum at the end of 1962. It is rumored that this poster was designed by Sandberg , but the execution of it done by ten Have. Still i love this poster .. The red and green indicate the hand of Sandberg and the simplicity of it makes this a highly important historical poster for the Stedelijk Museum. After 1989 there was a change in the relationship between Western Europe and Russia. The result of an exchange of exhibitions and the beginning of a fruitful collaboration between the Russian State museums and the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.
There was, of course, a highly successful and visited in large numbers Pusjkin collection exhibition and on a much smaller scale a few years later the Russian Avant-Garde exhibition at the Paleis Lange Voorhout Museum curated by Franz Kaiser. An exquisite exhibition with a selection chosen from the Abram Chudnovsky collection. personally i think this was, after the Malevich exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum a few years earlier, an exhibition which showed the quality of Russian art in the beginning of 20th Century. Great paintings from a visionary collector who collected his fellow country men and since never has been seen again in one of the European Museums. This blog it is the combibnation of the Crouwel designed poster and catalogue for the Mataré exhibition in 1964 at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. They are quite different. Where the poster was inspired by earlier lay out and typography. The catalogue was a highly original one . Special cover, excellent lay out for the inside. I like both, but perhaps i favor the catalogue design over the poster design.

Ever since i added to my personal collection of Stedelijk Museum catalogues the Willem Sandberg designed exhibition catalogue for the Campigli / 1950 exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum i became an admirer of this italian artist. Combining abstract element with figurative painting he developed a style of his own which is time less and authentic and very typical for Italian art.
His paintings have a sense of friendliness and “Joie de vivre” nd are still rooted in classic Italian art. This artist is a true Italian master painter, but also made some beautiful and highly collectible lithographs and etchings. If you look into Campigli his exhibition history you will notice that somehow people has lost interest in this great Italian artist, possibly considered “old fashioned” since one of his last major exhibitions was held in 2000 ( catalogue available at www.ftn-books.com). Still i am a fan and consider him one of the founders of great Italian Modern Art in the 20th century.
This time i focus on the Frank Stella exhibition from 1970, which was at that time a first for the Stedelijk Museum. A great poster and catalogue designed by Wim Crouwel completed the exhibition, The cover of the catalogue was embossed and this made it very special.

Just leaving the path of Crouwel /Sandberg designed posters for this Daniel Spoerri designed extraordinary poster for his 1971 exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum. In the early Seventies the Stedelijk Museum commissioned some of the exhibiting artist to design their own publicity posters . Tinguely was one of them and so was Daniel Spoerri, who made one of the very best Seventies posters ever. Just for your self…..
