Tom Heerschop (1972)

Schermafbeelding 2020-02-25 om 15.55.21

Already at an early age, some people know what they are about. Not what they want to become, but what they are. Tom draws. He has been drawing all his life. His source is life itself. His work flows from his hand. It cleans the grit from his veins. It sweeps along his body. He is at its mercy.

For his drawings, Tom uses many different formats. He always works on paper and with a diversity of drawing materials: pen, pencil, paint, ink, marker. The stream of work that pours from his hands marks the intensity with which Tom experiences and perceives life. With head, hands and heart.

This how the text starts at the Tom Heerschop site. A very nice site which shows the qualities in which he excels. Drawing is his second nature.

The reason why i visited his site and was impressed was the recent acquisition of a METIS publication on Heerschop. Edition of only 500 copies and available at www.ftn-books.com and please take a look at the Heerschop site for yourself.

Rodney Graham (1949)

Schermafbeelding 2020-02-25 om 15.39.37

Recently i encountered some works by Rodney Graham at the Voorlinden Museum near Wassenaar. Graham depicts himself in situations where he acts the main role. His works are a bit like the ones by Cindy Sherman, but less bizar. Everything in his photographs is specially made for the photograph and built exactly according to the specifications of the artist. This reminded me of the latest photographs by Erwin Olaf who’s compositions were built according to a specific plan by one of the masters of this kind of setup…Floris Vos.

Rodney Graham is a Canadian Conceptual Artist who’s works belong to the Vancouver School. His photographs are extremely large , staged and tell a story of their own.

www.ftn-books.com has some nice Rodney Graham books available .

Julia Aventura (1952) ….continued

Schermafbeelding 2020-02-24 om 15.12.33

Since my latest blog on Julia Ventura i took a personal interest in her works and acquired some more nice publications for my personal library. Among them there is the Museu Serralves publication which was published in cooperation with the Kroller Muller Museum. It is a true Retrospective p book which covers works from 1982 until 2003. I have put it on my shelf until i recently discovered another copy on my local bookmarket. I bought this too and concluded once again that Ventura her art is very personal indeed and of the highest quality. From now on i will be on the look out for any of her works that will appear at auction. From this moment i will offer this second copy at www.ftn-books.com. I truly can recommend this one.

The Lefebre Gallery was established in 1960 by John and Ljuba Lefebre at 47 East 77th Street in Manhattan, New York. John Lefebre became known for his photographs from the artist he presented, but the collection is from his exhibitions only.

The gallery’s inaugural exhibition, “A Collector in Paris becomes an Art Dealer in New York” was based on the Lefebre’s’ personal collection, which included artists who were part of The School of Paris in the 1950’s.  As Annette Michelson noted in her introductory text for the exhibition’s catalogue, “ There is an idea of a gallery –the almost ideal gallery- in which every painter represented, every painting, represents a personal taste, in which every canvas bears the mark of a private affection or of a passion (..) These canvases bear the stamp of a milieu (Paris), a period (the post-war years) and a particular sensibility; all have matured together.”

From this inaugural exhibition, the Lefebre Gallery established a reputation for mounting important exhibitions of post-war European art. Lefebre was the only American art dealer to represent Cobra artists such as Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Carl-Henning Pedersen, and Reinhold. Other artists represented by the Lefebre Gallery included Horst Antes, Pol Bury, Julius Bissier, Klaus Fussmann, Hans Hartung, Serge Polikoff, Antonio Segui, Wallasse Ting, among others.

The gallery closed following the death of John Lefebre in 1986.

Piet Dirkx weekly

A small exhibition at HEDEN in Den Haag was held in 2009. On this occasion a special book ( like a Moleskine) was published by Piet Dirkx and HEDEN. edition of only 400 copies. This was the invitation for the opening of the exhibition.
