Marlo Broekmans (1953)

Schermafbeelding 2020-03-06 om 14.46.18

I always have had an admiration for the photographs of Marlo Broekmans and sold her publications in the bookstore of the Haags Gemeentemuseum from the early 80’s. She is a master of lights and shadows and plays with them to enhance her models and subjects . This quality make her photographs stand out and make them recognizable at the same time.

The black and white photographs of her nudes are of a classic beauty and some of these were purchased by the Stedelijk Museum for their photography collection. In many of the photographs from the collection of the Stedelijk Museum, Marlo Broekmans is her own model , which gives these photographs an extra “:personal” layer and make them self reflecting documents.

Jo van Katwijk (1953)

Schermafbeelding 2020-03-05 om 15.46.30

For me personally i find that Jo van Katwijk/ Joke van Katwijk  has had  a fascinating career. I noticed her works some 15 years ago and started to visit her gallery exhibitions. Because I admired her Heliogravures i began to study her other photographs and found that they too had a quality i admired in black and white photography.

Beside her heliogravures i very much liked her nudes and still lives and recently i finally found the book i was looking for for a long time . The book is the KWAK & VAN DALEN & RONDAY publication which was published  on the occasion of the Grafiekprijs they initiated. It is a shared publication with POL TAVERNE, but for me the interesting part is the van Katwijk part which has some of her best Heliogravures published. This second copy that i now have( beside my personal copy ) is in great condition and now available at www.ftn-books.com

Bill Brandt (1904-1983)…body parts

Schermafbeelding 2018-09-03 om 14.52.46

Yesterday….  a blog on Marianne Brandt, today the subject is Bill Brandt. Not related in anyway  and an age difference of some 50 years, but both working with photography. But where Marianne cut up photographs to make some excellent photomontages, Bill Brandt uses the angle of the lens to make some very impressive photographs. For me Brandt is together with Lucien Clergue one of the very best nude photographers from last century. He uses the angle of the lens to photograph parts of the body and with this technique his photos are like the sculptures of Maillol and Moore in which body parts are enhanced and polished into almost abstract sculptures.

This technique makes him quite unique among photographers and with this quality he stands out. Add the use of Black and White film and Bill Brandt becomes a very recognizable photographer. His nudes are among the very best photographs from the last century and it took me only a minute to find some of the examples that show in an excellent way that what i tried to explain in words. www.ftn-books.com has some Bill Brandt titles avaialble.

Andre de Dienes (1913-1985)

Dienes began work as a professional photographer for the Communist newspaper L’Humanité, and was employed by the Associated Press until 1936, when the Parisian couturier Captain Molyneux noted his work and urged him to become a fashion photographer.

In 1938 the editor of Esquire, Arnold Gingrich offered him work in New York City, and helped fund Dienes’ passage to the United States. Once in the United States Dienes worked for Vogue and Life magazines as well as Esquire.

When not working as a fashion photographer Dienes travelled the USA photographing Native American culture, including the Apache, Hopi, and Navajo reservations and their inhabitants. Dissatisfied with his life as a fashion photographer in New York, Dienes moved to California in 1944, where he began to specialize in nudes and landscapes.

As well as Monroe, Dienes also photographed such notable actors as Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Henry Fonda, Shirley Temple, Ingrid Bergman, Ronald Reagan, Jane Russell, Anita Ekberg and Fred Astaire.

De Dienes married twice, and died of cancer on April 11, 1985, in Hollywood.

Lucien Clergue (1934-2014)

Schermafbeelding 2018-02-24 om 10.32.00

Here is a classic photographer who made his name with the Corrida, Picasso and the southern French nudes. There is a story on Clergue and myself. In the early Seventies there was a gallery in the Kazernestraat in Den Haag called Arta. In the gallery graphic art was sold to members at really affordable prices and i, as a young student, could afford me some graphic works by young artists who sold their works for as little as 20 guilders. A small sum to be paid for an original work of art by mainly dutch artist, but there were exceptions which were also on offer, some sets with multiple etchings and the occasional photograph…one of them an original photograph by Lucien Clergue. A nude in the sea, sand around her torso , no face…just a body….but such an impressive photograph i had to have it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I took a loan with my parents and bought it and since , it has been in my collection. Later i learned the photograph came from one of the most famous series Lucien Clergue has ever made on THE SEA, shot in the Camargue in France in 1972 and resulting in one of the most iconic nude photo series any photographer has made . The photograph has now become for sale at FTN art.  This is a classic Clergue photograph in a small edition , stamped ,signed and numbered by Lucien Clergue and in immaculate condition.

Schermafbeelding 2017-08-20 om 10.12.01

You possibly know the name Herb Ritts from his many celebrity photographs he has made through the years, but if the name does not ring a bell immediately…just have a look at his site. http://www.herbritts.com and you will recognize so many known faces. You will find Gwen Stefani, but also Ronald Reagan ao.

But beside these portrait photographs, Ritts has made so many iconic stylized staged photographs in which he plays a game with shadows and light that makes him stand out from all the others from his generation. I strongly recommend you to visit the Herb Ritts site because you will discover so many great photographs over there and have fun with all the short (commercial) movies of there. Here is one as a preview
