Frank van Hemert works in series. Paintings and drawings can have the same title and be totally different from each other in size and composition. However there is one element which is fixed. In the ZEVEN ( Seven) series its is the sequential numbering of 1,2,3,4,5,6

The Seven is not used, but the ZEVEN title completes this series of numbers. To van Hemert, the number seven is a symbol for the person who has “fulfilled” himself, become a whole person. The fact that the number itself is not included in the image indicated that this stage has not yet been attained; This “not yet” is suggested by the incomplete number sequence.

Because many of these paintings have been painted with the pink/red that has to been proven instable. Many of these paintings have been damaged or at least can not been shown and stored properly.

This SEVEN series has become of the most iconic and important series by Frank van Hemert and fact is that from these series part of the paintings can be considered to be lost because of the paint van Hemert used. Still some are in excellent condition and i have been fortunate to buy one of these large paintings which is in excellent condition. It comes the former Buhrmann Ubbens collection and has been preserved in an excellent way and has become now one of the highlights from our collection.

I have tried to find some from examples from the series of ZEVEN paintings and of course i will start with the one from our collection…our own ….ZEVEN

Flowers and Art…it is springtime

This morning after visiting a local flowershop, setup every year near a field where these are grown, i realized that we always have a lot of flowers at home. The owner cut the flowers from the field while i was there. It is a wide variety of sorts that is now available and they all give color and atmosphere to the house.

The moment he came to me with the 2 freshly cut bundles of wild and cultivated flowers i knew the subject for todays blog, because at this moment the realization occurred to me ,that flowers are important in art too. Many artists have used the subject of flowers in their works. From very realistic. like Erik Andriesse to more abstract like Leo van Gestel ( from both http://www.ftn-books.com has publications available).

But for many these will not be very well known or familiar names, but there are many more…… How about Monet? a flower painter “pur sang” and Vincent van Gogh.

Just look at all the great names in art, even the almost abstract painters, They all draw inspiration from flowers. Perhaps the most beautiful ones come from Georgia Ao’Keeffe. Realistic, dreamlike and mystic these are perhaps the very best flower paintings in the world.

Saatchi Art and online art dealing

This morning i was surprised to see an annual report on online Art dealing by Saatchi. According to Saatchi there is a tremendous growth in on online art business, but you have to be careful which artists to pick to make a sound investment. I must say…..works by some of these artists really look good and prices are still on the verge of affordable ( $ 1000-$5000) . But what struck me most is that Saatchi is creating a market for artist who THEY represent. This is only a very small percentage of artists in the world who are creating their works but, do not have the representation nor the time and money to wait before a sale is realized.

My advise to build a small collection, is to find the artist(s) you really like, visit his or her studio, start building a relation as a collector with the artist and follow him/her over the years and when you have some money to spare buy directly from the artist and support them in every other way you can, by introducing them to friends/ collectors and keeping contact to follow him/her. This way you are helping the artist to build a following of supporters and you will support them with your appreciation and your purchase(s) over the years. This is much nicer than to make an online purchase and have the work send to your home address in a “beautiful “crate and not having seen where it comes from. To appreciate a work in the best way, is to see where it was created and to meet the person that created it. It makes the picture complete and the art you look at has not become a piece of decoration but a true work of art that you chose by yourself by having a choice from many other works that were created over a much longer period than the new ” last years models” which are presented by online galleries.
