Mario Deluigi (1901-1978)

Schermafbeelding 2021-07-07 om 16.41.09

Mario Deluigi is another painter from the stable of Galleria del Cavallino. He is one of the painters i like the most and his works remind me of the works from the early Seventies Sol LeWitt made for some italian publishers. Perhapd they have known eachother, but what remains is that the works by Deluigi are not cheap , but far less expensive than those of Sol LeWitt. Great art and still available at art galleries at a much more affordable price

Mario Deluigi was born in Treviso in 1901. The artist’s production was characterized by the use of grattage, a technique that required creating marks in negative, engraved on the surface layers of the painting, characterized by a lumpy and material surface. Color and light were the foundations of the artist’s research and the grattage works, fulcrum of his artistic production, were conceived and created in harmony with the spatialist current to which the artist adhered. The little book below is available at www.ftn-books.com

Gianni Dova (1925-1991)

Schermafbeelding 2021-07-08 om 15.19.41

This i would call typical Sixties art. In almost every country i can find an artists who works the same and makes the same kind of art . Still, GIanni Dova was part of the illustrous galleria del Cavallino. Making him part of a stable of respected artists. (www.ftn-books.com has some nice publications by the gallery available.

Perhaps the future will bring anew the admiration and appreciation for this artist, but for now i can indicate better artists than Dova in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe. Still art is very personal and if you are the admirer of Dova, please do not take any of my personal information too serious…it is just my personal point of view.

Eugenio Carmi (1920-2016)

Schermafbeelding 2021-07-07 om 15.52.12

Without realizing it i have collected some nice collectable items by Eugenio Carmi which are all available at www.ftn-books.com

Carmi was one of the first Modern Abstract painters in Italy. By chance i collected some works, but finding info on him was musch harder so here is the text i found on Wikipedia.

He is considered to have been one of the main exponents of abstractionism in Italy.

Born in Genoa, in 1938 Carmi moved to Switzerland because of the racial laws imposed by Benito Mussolini. He graduated in Chemistry at the ETH Zurich. Carmi returned to Italy after the war, where he studied painting with Felice Casorati and sculpture with Guido Galletti.

In the early 1950s, Carmi abandoned the informal style and adopted a geometric rigor in his works. His works often used factory materials such as welded steel and iron.[1]

Between 1958 and 1965 Carmi collaborated with the steel company Italsider (later Ilva) as their responsible for the image. In 1963 he founded with Flavio Costantini and Emanuele Luzzati the cooperative of artists Galleria del Deposito. A close friend of Umberto Eco, he collaborated with him on several projects.] He also taught in several academies

Franco Canilla (1911-1985)

Schermafbeelding 2021-07-07 om 15.24.31

Because of the purchase of a catalogue collection of the galleria del Cavallino i discovered over 2 dozens of Italian artists that i did not know of. One of the discoveries is the sculptor/goldsmith Franco Canilla. I learned …. agreat nam in the Sixties but nowadaus forgotten. Stil a great way to start to learn about these almost forgotten names in Italian art. The series of Galleria del Cavallino catalogues is now available at www.ftn-books.com

Italian sculptor and painter Franco Cannilla was also a talented jewelry maker. Although he was recognized internationally for his art, Cannilla’s jewels were a more intimate expression of his practice. These pieces were oftentimes produced in small or limited quantities and are regarded as true expressions of his art—small sculptures that were intended to be worn, or as Alexander Calder described, “living works of art.” Best known for his unique and ornate jewelry designs, often in gold, Cannilla first exhibited his jewelry in Milan in 1949. His career was prolific, and also featured many successful collaborations with other Italian designers.

Franco Gentilini(1909-1981)

Another artist who was represented by Galleria del Cavallino was the italian painter and ceramic artist Franco Gentilini.. He had several shows during his career at the galleria del Cavallino. (the 1960 publication for the Cavallino gallery is available at www.ftn-books.com). Perhaps his fame was partly thanks to being a collaborator to Giorgio Morandi, with whom he had made several objects  in Bologna. He took part in numerous editions of the Venice Biennale, beginning with the acceptance of his work for the 17th Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte della Città di Venezia in 1930, when he also visited Paris.

He moved to Rome in 1932 and held his first solo show at the Galleria di Roma with works in an archaic style inspired by pre-Renaissance Italian art. He also established himself as a fresco painter. He took part in the 5th Esposizione Internazionale delle Arti Decorative in Milan in 1933 and the 2nd Quadriennale Nazionale d’Arte in Rome in 1935, on which occasion the city’s governing body bought one of his works. It was in the late 1930s that he began to associate with the artists of the Roman School. There was considerable demand for his work among private Italian collectors after World War II, not least because of his participation in numerous exhibitions.

Galleria del Cavallino / Venice

Schermafbeelding 2021-05-24 om 09.28.47

The driving force of the gallery was Carlo Cardazzo. The man was a visionary and  presented many great italian and foreign artists in his gallery at the San Marco square in Venice. The importance of the gallery was recognized by the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation who organised an exhibition aroud Cardazzo and his galleria del Cavallino in 2008

The distinctive component of Cardazzo’s new vision of art was his precocious realization of the importance of networking and collaboration that would mark the art world of the future. On 25 April 1942, on the Riva degli Schiavoni in Venice, he inaugurated the celebrated Galleria del Cavallino, in the same year that Peggy Guggenheim opened her New York museum-gallery Art of This Century. In 1946, he opened the Galleria del Naviglio in the center of Milan, initiating a series of relations with critics and intellectuals, travelling constantly between Europe and the USA, bringing together artists of different generations as well as avant-garde architects, and printing outstanding publications that projected the image of his persona to the wider public. He was the first dealer to contract Lucio Fontana, after Fontana’s return from Argentina, and it was for the Galleria del Naviglio in Milan that Fontana conceived his Spatial Ambience with Black Light.

Cardazzo was a creative powerhouse of the art world, a beacon to collectors, museum directors and gallerists. Peggy Guggenheim herself acknowledged his central position in promoting the new avant-gardes. They shared several of their concerns for modern art: the promotion of American art, their dedication to the historic avant-gardes, to Kurt Schwitters, Joan Miró, Sonia Delaunay, Pablo Picasso, Jean Arp, Giacomo Balla, Vasily Kandinsky, artists whom Cardazzo exhibited several times, sometimes with Guggenheim’s help, while he in turn brought to her attention artists whose work was to enter her collection. From the time of her arrival in Venice, Guggenheim sustained a dialogue with Cardazzo that was dense with contacts, proposals and exchanges of opinion about artists and movements: works by Victor Brauner, Matta, Emilio Vedova and Asger Jorn were purchased by Guggenheim from Cardazzo, and still belong to her Venetian museum. Again, it was due to Cardazzo that Guggenheim discovered and patronized Tancredi Parmeggiani, Giuseppe Santomaso, and Vinicio Vianello. Postwar art, especially Italian, concludes Guggenheim’s journey of discovery of the artistic avant-gardes that she had begun in London in 1938.
