Otto Egberts… SCHAAMSTREKEN vol. 4

Schermafbeelding 2017-10-28 om 14.14.14

Here is the fourth and final volume within the series Schaamstreken by Otto Egberts. And again totally different. Shadows of animal figures are combined with geometrical compositions making it completely different from the other volumes. Beautifully executed small paintings on Danish and German maps this time. Because of the thick paper used for these maps these paintings feel like real paintings , bound again in goat leather. This series has been a joy to photograph and in my opinion one of the best artist books series by a contemporary artist. Let me know what you think about it.

measures : 39,5 x 10,9 cm.

contains : 28 pages plus goat leather cover

contains : 11 “paintingss” on old geographical maps spread over 2 pages and 2 paintings on  a singular page

signed and dated, 2000 by Otto Egberts at the end page in pencil.

Otto Egberts … SCHAAMSTREKEN vol. 3

Schermafbeelding 2017-10-28 om 14.13.53

Here is the third volume within the series Schaamstreken by Otto Egberts. For me the most spectacular art book ever! It has a Bacon like quality…poetic, raw, explicit. Beautifully executed small paintings on German and Swedish old maps. Because of the thick paper used for these maps these paintings feel like real paintings , bound in goat leather. The scenes are personal and explicit, but above all …theye never loose their artistic quality, making this for me the ultimate artist book. enjoy the pages of this volume no. 3 and look closely at the photo which i took from the very first page. The scene explicit, but it has a dream like quality.  Next week the last volume within this series which is again totally different.

measures : 39,5 x 10,9 cm.

contains : 30 pages plus goat leather cover

contains : 11 “paintingss” on old geographical maps spread over 2 pages and 2 paintings on  a singular page

signed and dated, 2000 by Otto Egberts at the end page in pencil.

Otto Egberts .. SCHAAMSTREKEN vol. 2

Schermafbeelding 2017-10-28 om 14.13.39

Here is the second volume within the series Schaamstreken by Otto Egberts. At first glance this looks the least spectacular, but study it closely and you see that each page is worked over. Erased inks, sandpapered surfaces, folds and stamped “vervallen” (dilapidated). These were original maps too and i found some names which make it look like these come from the German Dutch Wadden region.

measures : 39,5 x 10,9 cm.

contains : 38 pages plus goat leather cover

contains : 32 “drawings” on old geographical maps

signed and dated, 2000 by Otto Egberts at the end page in pencil

Saul Steinberg (1914-1999)

Schermafbeelding 2017-09-22 om 14.12.33

What have the Maeght foundation , Museum Boymans van Beuningen and the Stedelijk Museum in common? They all three organized exhibitions with Saul Steinberg. This is what i thought of before i started to look at information on the internet and found the foundation of Saul Steinberg  / saulsteinbergfoundation.org. This site starts with giving an overview on his life , but soon you discover that this is one of the great sites on art on the internet totally dedicated to Saul Steinberg. Try it and if interested in the artist you soon will loose yourself completely and spent a long time on this site discovering why Saul Steinberg was important. Here is the short intro from the Steinberg foundation on the artist and please do not forget that www.ftn-books.com has some nice publications available.

Famed worldwide for giving graphic definition to the postwar age, Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) had one of the most remarkable careers in American art. While renowned for the covers and drawings that appeared in The New Yorker for nearly six decades, he was equally acclaimed for the drawings, paintings, prints, collages, and sculptures he exhibited internationally in galleries and museums.

Steinberg crafted a rich and ever-evolving idiom that found full expression through these parallel yet integrated careers. Such many-leveled art, however, resists conventional critical categories. “I don’t quite belong to the art, cartoon or magazine world, so the art world doesn’t quite know where to place me,” he said. 1 He was a modernist without portfolio, constantly crossing boundaries into uncharted visual territory. In subject matter and styles, he made no distinction between high and low art, which he freely conflated in an oeuvre that is stylistically diverse yet consistent in depth and visual imagination.

Hans Sonnenberg (1928-2017)

Schermafbeelding 2017-10-03 om 13.36.24

Yesterday il learned that one of the icons in the dutch gallery scene has died. Hans Sonnenberg founded Delta gallery in Rotterdam, which opened its doors on 8 January 1962 and it was the first gallery in Rotterdam that concentrated exclusively on contemporary art. The role that Hans Sonnenberg played as gallery owner and collector in the Rotterdam art world cannot be overestimated. He succeeded time and again in bringing international developments to the harbour city. In addition, he was aware of the importance of a platform for Rotterdam artists. Sonnenberg has run Delta for an uninterrupted period of fifty years. In his opinion, the gallery owner should ideally be closely connected with the gallery. “The gallery and the gallery owner are one. They call me Mister Delta, but Delta is Hans Sonnenberg”, says the gallery owner in a recent publication.
www.ftn-books.com has some nice gallery Delta publications available.

Paul van Eerden (1954)

Best way to start a blog on van Eerden is this very informative video .

It explains what he sees and how he works. The result….highly original drawings and for this he has become for me personally one of the great contemporary artists in the Netherlands . Good and Slow observations are the fundaments for his drawings, which take a long time to finish with highly detailed parts which look simple but take a long time to execute and finish. The publications do justice to his drawings because they maybe even take longer to finish and some of them are available at www.ftn-books.com

Sculpture 10 days… Day 5 ..Carel Visser ( 1928-2015)

Schermafbeelding 2017-06-08 om 12.24.22

One sculptor you must mention in these sculpture 10 days is Carel Visser. 2 years ago Visser died, but his works remain and are present in every important dutch museum collection. His works are in many cases ” assemblages of found material, but during the last 3 decade of his life he made statues from Corten steel and these are the works that can be found frequently in many places in the Netherlands . His sculptures from window screens are less suitable to be presented in the streets ,

Schermafbeelding 2017-06-08 om 12.29.49

but these are in the museums and can be seen there. It is time for a large retrospective on his works, because beside his sculpture there is also his print making in which he excelled. For many publications on Carel Visser please visit www.ftn-books.com

Sculpture 10 days… Day 4 ..Tony Cragg ( 1949)

Schermafbeelding 2017-06-08 om 12.16.36

Tony Cragg, british and famous in the Nineties, but nowadays he almost looks forgotten. No more great shows , nor great assignments…..but his works are still there. Present in great collections like the Boymans van Beuningen, Tate and Caldic collection. Maybe it is time to rediscover Cragg, because his works are highly original and well worth seeing. In many cases the scale is large and because these large sculptures can not be dismissed they often impress. Take a look at the books available at www.ftn-books.com and if interested visit the Caldic collection for this and other great sculptures by contemporary artists.

Walter de Maria (1935-2013)

Schermafbeelding 2017-05-03 om 06.45.54

Wim Beeren was the first curator /director of the Stedelijk Museum who bought for the collection of the SM a Walter de Maria. Others in the Netherlands, ao the Museum Boymans van Beuningen, would follow, but still there are not many works by de Maria to be found in dutch collections. Probably the main reason is not their appeal, but these works are hard to collect because of their sheer size and complexity. They need space….. a lot of space……

Complete rooms or even outside spaces have to be dedicated to one work ( see lightning field, de Maria’s most famous work) and that is for many Museums and collectors the main reason not to include a de Maria. Still whenever there is a retrospective in a museum, visitors are impressed and one can easily see why. Look at the video and get a nice impression of his qualities of his form of LAND ART.

Sigmar Polke (1941-2010)

It took a long time for me to finally appreciate the art by Sigmar Polke, but once i did i became a fan and realized that he must be one of the true great artists from last century. Born in the middle of WWII he soon became in the early sixties one of the leading German artists that started their career after this terrible war. The trademark of his works became the use of polka dots in grids as an overlay and he stayed with the use of these polka dots technique throughout his entire career. Side stepping to photography and almost monochrome paintings his oeuvre became very diversified, but always recognizable. Turning point for me was the Polke i saw within a Beyeler Museum exhibition. I do not remember which show it was, but i remember the technique of the polka dots as an overlay to the picture, which reminded me to Marcel van Eeden. Where van Eeden uses small intimate sizes, Polke uses large canvasses. Magnified pictures within a different context are part of his works and sometimes even lean towards surrealism. There is one work i have to see sometime in my life. It is the work he created for the reopening of the Reichstag in Berlin in 1999. When i visit Berlin this will be a must see for me.

There are some nice publications in the inventory of www.ftn-books.com
