If i would make a top 10 of my favorit Stedelijk Museum publications this Jan van Munster publication from 1970 would be ceertainly somewhere in my top 10.

Published in 1970. It is typical Wim Crouwel design, but some details make it exceptional. First there is the use of a viny cover which has a silkscreened print in bright red on cover and backside. The vinyl cover is used as a portfolio for just one 2 page publication. Printed recto/verso and protected by a blank sheet of white paper. This publication is very special and instead of being a full catalogue with the exhibition , this is a true artist publication making this much more valuable for all Stedelijk Museum collectors and Jan van Munster admirers. Wim Crouwel designed series for Museum Fodor

Around 1972 , Wim Crouwel started to use a computer design inspired layout for the Museum Fodor publications. A bright orange/red color with in the background a pattern of fine white dot. Just below the middle a tin white line. Fodor in Pink. On the left half the exhibition in info and in Most cases above the white line the artist name. Over 40 publications have appreared within these series and nearly all belong to the very best of Crouwel designs from the Seventies. http://www.ftn-books.com has many of these publications available. This is a typical connoiseurs choice, not expensive and with all the qualities of a Seventies Crouwel designed publication.

Uwe Loesch (1943)

I did not realize that many of the posters for the Ruhrlandmuseum in Essen were designed by Uwe Loesch. For me Loesch has the same graphic qualities as i find with the designs by Wim Crouwel. His posters are of a rare quality, inventive and timeless.

Andre Volten ( 1925-2002)

Schermafbeelding 2020-11-18 om 16.53.14.png Over the years I have seen many Wim Crouwel designed catalogues. But one is definitely in my personal top 10 of Crowel designed catalogues.

It is the 1966 ANDRÉ VOLTEN catalogue he made for the Voltens Stedelijk Museum exhibition. Just some features of this great catalogue. The size. It has never been better than the size of the catalogues he designed in the early Sixties. The back has that typical Crouwel designed element. The lettering. Just look at the E of Andre. is has a hardly noticable accent aigu making it the perfect É. And than there is this graphical element taken from a Volten sculpture . It is there , but it also underlines is a very subtle way the name of Volten.

Than there is the inside cover. A shiny silver . Just that one page but a very very powerful elemnt in the catalogue. All pages have a tranquility with lots of space, making the catalogue breath. Photography is top with a brilliant Volten portrait in his studio at work…… a lovely and highly collectable catalogue and still for sale at www.ftn-books.com

One of the most iconic sets is the catalogue and poster for the 1965 Raysse exhibition. Pure french Pop Art whith a poster that shows the neon elements for which aysse became famous. Both poster and book belong to the best Crouwel has designed in the Sixties for the Stedelijk …..

Posters by Willem Sandberg and Wim Crouwel…part 9

Another iconic duo from the early Sixties is the Wim Crouwel designed poster for the Etienne martin exhibition in 1963 and the catalogue he did design for the same exhibition. The catalogue is still influenced by the designs of Willem Sandberg, but the poster is completely different and a 100% Wim Crouwel design. The Martin poster has become the starting point of a series of iconic posters he made for the Stedelijk Museum. Both publications are now available at http://www.ftn-books.com.

Posters by Willem Sandberg and Wim Crouwel…part 8

This blog it is the combibnation of the Crouwel designed poster and catalogue for the Mataré exhibition in 1964 at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. They are quite different. Where the poster was inspired by earlier lay out and typography. The catalogue was a highly original one . Special cover, excellent lay out for the inside. I like both, but perhaps i favor the catalogue design over the poster design.

This time i focus on the Frank Stella exhibition from 1970, which was at that time a first for the Stedelijk Museum. A great poster and catalogue designed by Wim Crouwel completed the exhibition, The cover of the catalogue was embossed and this made it very special.

Daniel Spoerri ( 1971 poster)

Just leaving the path of Crouwel /Sandberg designed posters for this Daniel Spoerri designed extraordinary poster for his 1971 exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum. In the early Seventies the Stedelijk Museum commissioned some of the exhibiting artist to design their own publicity posters .
