Christopher Knowles (born 1959) is an American poet and painter. He was born in New York City on May 4, 1959, and has received a diagnosis of possible brain damage. He is often referred to as autistic. In 1976, his poetry was used by Robert Wilson for the avant-garde minimalist Philip Glass opera, Einstein on the Beach. Wilson describes his discovery of the then 13-year-old Knowles in the extended notes to the Tomato Records release of Einstein on the Beach
In early 1973 a man … gave me an audio tape … I was fascinated. The tape was entitled “Emily Likes the TV”. On it a young man’s voice spoke continuously creating repetitions and variations on phrases about Emily watching the TV. I began to realize that the words flowed to a patterned rhythm whose logic was self-supporting. It was a piece coded much like music. Like a cantata or fugue it worked with conjugations of thoughts repeated in variations…

The first time I heard about Knowles was when the Boymans van Beuningen museum presented an exhibition on the artists and the BEBERT publishers published one of the best books from the Eighties on this hardly known artist.
For this occasion Jannes Linders, a Rotterdam photographer made the press material. Knowles name did not grow , but the book and his great art remain and are available at http://www.ftn-books.com and so are the press ( original) photographs .
Pablo van Dijk is an illustrious name in dutch publishing. van Dijk founded the publishing house Bebert ( named after the cat of Celine).
This publisher took the initiative to publish many , now famous and widely collected, art publications. There were the Pandora boxes ( named after his former wife Pandora) containing a multiple of works by contemporary artists. Among them Mapplethorpe and Vautier, but there were also lesser prestigious publications commissioned by art institutions and one of them was EEN GESPREK. An interview with Joseph Beuys by longtime admirer and collector Frits Bless. The book was published on the occasion of the van Reekum exhibition in 1987. A typical Bebert publication, spiral bound with carton cover and with an original photograph on the cover by Caroline Tisdall.

Robin Winters has had his exhibitions in the Netherlands. Both in museums and galleries he was presented in solo exhibitions during the 90’s. These days, Winters is represented by the Deweer gallery in Belgium, but in the Nineties there were several who thought this artist was interesting enough to develop special publications with Winters. One of these “specials” was produced by Bebert. It is a large cotton sheet printed with heads which are so typical for Winters his art.

Robin Winters and Europe are possibly a better match than Robin Winters and the US. There have been many shows and important museum presentations in Europe, possibly more than there ever have been in the US. This presence meant a great circle of admirers and some extremely nice publications of which i consider the large printed cotton canvas the very best of them. ( available at www.ftn-books.com ). This extraordinary work measures 150 x 130 cm. and comes with an original Winters drawing printed on paper and signed and dated in pencil by Winters. The cotton work was published in an edition of only 169 copies and shows the best qualities of the art of Robin Winters. Published by publishing house Bebert in 1986.

Robin Winters (born 1950 in Benicia, California) is an American conceptual artist and teacher based in New York. Winters is known for creating solo exhibitions containing an interactive durational performance component to his installations, sometimes lasting up to two months. As an early practitioner of “Relational Aesthetics” Winters has incorporated such devices as blind dates, double dates, dinners, fortune telling, and free consultation in his performances. Throughout his career he has engaged in a wide variety of media, such as performance art, film, video, writing prose and poetry, photography, installation art, printmaking, drawing, painting, ceramic sculpture, bronze sculpture, and glassblowing. Why Tuzina in this blog. Tuzina is one of those artists who remained true to a certain principle in art and researched it over 40 years now. Het started with a line in one corner and developed his art from there on. Tilted rectangles, which are crossed from corner to corner in different kinds of colors is the main figure used by Tuzina and is very recognizable and one can find an excellent walldrawing with this “window” in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.
The Gemeentemuseun was one of the first who presented his works and in the eighties Pablo van Dijk commissioned Tuzina to make 55 separate drawings in different colors for his Bebert publishing house. The one depicted here is one of these 55. Signed and dated by Tuzina and in excellent mint condition. This one is available at www.ftn-books.com and soon there will be a second “green” one listed from the same series. Impressive art from an artist who can be considered as a post minimal artist.

Günter Tuzina studied at the Hamburg Art Academy between 1971 and 1977. He has been exploring the fundamental principles underlying painting since 1975. Günter Tuzina combines lines, squares, rectangles and Colour Fields within a frame in a fascinating and inexhaustibly rich quest for equilibrium and tension. In its stringent simplicity Tuzina’s work is based on Minimal art and the principles laid down by Theo van Doesburg and De Stijl.
Tuzina was awarded a Villa Romana Prize in Florence in 1981. A retrospective was mounted in 1985 at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, for which Tuzina executed a mural two years later that was, unfortunately, lost when the museum was restored.
From 1982 until 1999 Tuzina lived and worked in Cologne but now lives in Berlin. He has had numerous exhibitions: at the David Nolan Gallery in New York (1991), the Cologne Kunstverein (1992), the “Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus” in Munich (1993) and again at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague in 2002.
