Harm Kamerlingh Onnes (1893-1985)

Schermafbeelding 2020-06-23 om 13.29.02

Harm Kamerlingh Onnes, born in the city of Leiden was an artist whose works were hardly known and appreciated during his life. He made drawings, gouaches, Oil paintings and ceramics, but if you ask me …can you mention one monumental work by him…. I can not produce any, but bis smaller works that I encountered at auction I appreciate. Postal stamp design and small humoristic sketches on daily life I have seen and admired.

His work was influenced by modernism in the period between 1915 and 1925 and in 1918 he designed some stained windows for JJP Oud’s vacation home ” DE VONK “. From 1925 until his death daily life is his only subject for his art. From this year on his work is only figurative.

http://www.ftn-books has some Kamerlingh Onnes publications available.

Jurriaan van Hall (1962)

Schermafbeelding 2020-09-01 om 16.24.34

van Hall is from a generation that rediscovered realism in painting. Specially they were interested in the human body.  Peter Klashorst founded the group “After Nature” and soon after was joined by Jurriaan van Hall who also is a painter” pur sang”

Jurriaan van Hall (1962) is a painter and sculptor. He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, the Rijksakademie voor beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam and the Royal College of Art in London. Together with Peter Klashorst and Bart Domburg he founded the notorious artists’ collective, After Nature, which created a commotion in the early 1990s with its controversial painting performances. The artists’ nudes, still lifes, self-portraits and landscapes, painted with loose brushstrokes and intense use of colour, prompted a major revival of figurative painting, with exhibitions in the Netherlands and the United States. Praised and vilified – but never overlooked – the group disbanded in 1993 and the artists went their separate ways.

Looking at his work I find the same approach and “rawness” that i also see in the works of Freud. The human body is not perfect and this is shown without any holding back by van Hall.

It takes some time to recognize the quality of his works but look a little longer and you will discover these paintings being timeless and his painting, raw, blunt, colourful and…..perfect. The above publication by de Lakenhal is available at http://www.ftn-books.com

Piet Mondriaan….Molen bij Avond

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-31 om 14.18.10

Two days ago i was so lucky to have a camera ( phone) at hand. We were planning to have a little boat ride in the evening, but…..suddenly it started to rain and we decided not to go. However, 10 minutes later it stopped raining and while we were having a cup of coffee we decided it was still worth it to go to Vlietlanden for a 2 hour trip. We left at 18.45 hr. and were returning at aprox 20.10 when we passed this windmill just near our home. I asked for my telephone and took this photograph. 5 seconds sooner and it would not have had the effect it has now. 5 seconds later and we would have been blinded by the light of the sun. But with this result i am so pleased. I have not done anything with the photograph, because i think it is 100% ok, but 24 hrs later Google send me the same photograph which they had worked over with some filters and this is the result they produced ( second photograph).

The moment i saw it it reminded me of the Mondrian. Molen bij Avond i know so well from the years i worked at the Gemeentemuseum. There is 100 years between them, but these pictures show that there is still a very scenic the Netherlands to be found near the largest cities of this country. I have many of Mondrian’s publications available at http://www.ftn-books.com

the Analogy between Jan Saudek and Katharina Behrend

When you literally strip all from your subject and leave her standing in front of a chosen background there is not much difference.

There is 70 years between these 2 photographs but when you tell me it is only 10 years i would believe it too. Katharina Eleonore Behrend made her photographs between 1904 and 1928 and the entire series which was still within her family was left to the Stichting Nederlands Fotoarchief in Leiden. The series shows an artistic point of view on daily life in the beginning of the 20th century and gives a perfect impression of the Netherlands around 1910. The art nude is somehow different….. it is classic in its pose and shows why photography can be great art too. Beautiful light and the perfect intriguing picture.

The Katharina Eleonore Behrend 1904-1928 book is available at www.ftn-books.com

100 years ….DE STIJL

It was 50 years ago Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles was released on the 1st of June, but 50 years before that date the DE STIJL group was founded in Leiden in 1917 with the publishing of the book de NIEUWE BEWEGING IN DE SCHILDERKUNST by Theo van Doesburg. Leiden , Utrecht ( home of the famous Rietveld huis) and Den Haag ( largest Mondrian/de Stijl collection in the world will be presenting exhibitions on DE STIJL and its influence on Modern Art. One basic thing about DE STIJL. Use of primary colors, dividing the surface in abstract elements. Mondrian and van Doesburg were originally friends and worked along these lines until van Doesburg thought his works were limited by the use of horizontal and vertical lines and wanted to use the “diagonal” too. This cooled down the friendship and van Doesburg decided to leave the group in 1924. Was it the end of the DE STIJL…no certainly not . The group stopped, but the ideas were there and were later found in BAUHAUS and constructivist modern art. To acknowledge the importance of DE STIJL is done now by these many exhibitions and certainly more than a few will be well worth visiting. Prepare yourself and look at the many DES TIJL/ Mondrian /van Doesburg publications available at www.ftn-books.com

PS . there is a very special bank by Ko Verzuu in blue and yellow which is exclusively available at ww.ftn-books.com. This was a prestige edition by the makers of ADO.
