Anton Martineau (1926-2017)

One of the last painters in the Netherland who felt inspired and had strong feelings for the COBRA mouvement in the Netherlands. Her never joined Cobra, worked together with his friend and “partner in crime” Lucebert and had many one man exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad. Unfortunately his fame did not cross the borders, but his gallery ( Willy Schoots ) was loyal to him and represented him until the day he died.

My personal thoughts about Anton Martineau….. Over the years i have seen many paintings by this painter and what struck me is either the painting is good and appealing or it is not that good and i would never want to add it to a collection. Still Martineau paintings have their qualities. See and judge for yourself the examples below.

http://www.ftn-books.com has some nice Martineau publications available.

Lucebert and The Centraal Museum/ 1974

centraal lucebert b

About a year ago i mentioned in one of my blogs the excellent design and print quality of almost every publication of the Centraal Museum Utrecht they published since the early Seventies. I have encountered publications which were designed by Jan Schoonhoven  and ick Bruna and many others  and among them,…. and one of the last i discovered , is Lucebert who designed a very nice publication within the MEDEDELINGEN series in 1974. It contains almost 20 original Lucebert drawings for this publication. This will be a rare and highly collectible item in the near future, so pick up a copy if you have the chance. Know that there is now a copy available at www.ftn-books.com

Yesterday, AntonMartineau died. He proclaimed himself the last of a great generation , together with Appel and Lucebert ( personal friends) he became known as an abstract painter, but never belonged to the Cobra movement. Born in the middle of the Red Light district in Amsterdam  a fortuneteller told him in his early youth that he would become a painter and a writer. He studied with one of the great designers in these days Paul Schuitema and was successful both as a painter and a writer. www.ftn-books.com has only one title of this fascinating artist available , but it is an important one. It contains both poetry and drawings by this great dutch artist.

Lucebert (1924-1994)

Everywhere i come across Lucebert (Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk) nowadays. Re-editions of his poems, paintings at auction and exhibitions in galleries and museums. There is a huge interest in his works since 20 years or so, but before that period he was hardly known  as a painter , but nowadays he is considered as one of the leading dutch artists from the 20th century . In his early years he was very much influenced by Cobra , but soon he developed his personal style which for me is a crossing between Cobra and Art Brut. He became known for his poems, but when you ask about Lucebert nowadays, people think of him first and foremost as a painter and because of this interest it is harder and harder to find the early publications on his paintings and etchings. There are some by Nouvelles Images, but the most important ones come from the pubvlications series of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Publications in which original etchings were bound and therefore are highly collectable ( and expensive) publications. www.ftn-books.com has a nice selection of classic and collectable Lucebert publications.
