Helena van der Kraan (1940-2020, continued)

A few months ago i wrote a short ” IN MEMORIAM” on the occasion of Helena van der Kraan’s passing away on her birthday at the age of 80 years,Bbut what i did not mention was that there was a very nice retropective on her ” Bears ” series at the Fotomuseum Den Haag, only one problem……Covid 19 made it for us almost possible to visit, but now that the museums can be visited again, we went to the Fotomuseum, Gem and Kunstmuseum to get an artistic “update” including the Bear series retrospective by Helena van der Kraan.

Personally i love her  almost classic  way of photography, Linda was less charmed, but both we agreed that the combination of GEM and Fotomuseum ( also a Wegman exhibition) was time very well spend. Another reason to write this short blog is that i found a signed copy of the 1986 book published by van Beveren/Haags Gemeentemuseum and perhaps this shows best why i think that Helena will be remembered as one of our great photographers. Every photo is “classic” and timeless and where the photographs of her compatriot Saudek are getting more and more dated, the photographs of Helena grow on you and ripen and gain in quality by the year.

The exhibition shoudl have been closed on the 21tgh of UAgust , but because programs are continued at many of the museums the Helena van der Kraan Bear series is still to be viewed at the Fotomuseum. I do not know how long it still will be there, but i urge you to go when you have a chance.

Iris van Dongen (1975)

About the same time the Hadassah Emmerich exhibition was held at the GEM museum, Roel Arkesteijn curated another iconic exhibition. It was the NOX NOCTIS exhibition by Iris van Dongen. van Dongen has become a force in modern dutch painting. Her symbolic/dark paintings remind me of the best by Gustav Klimt, but they are certainly not copies.

These are highly original works of art that would grace any modern art collection. A nice insight movie by HOLLANDSE MEESTERS show van Dongen at work in her studio:

Hadassah Emmerich (1974)

The first time i heard about the artist Hadassah Emmerich was at the time she had an exhibition at GEM. Curated by Roel Arkesteijn this exhibition was one of the first at the GEM museum. The Neighbor of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and dedicated to contemporary art. I think her paintings are overwhelming, extremely attractive, but far too exuberant to add to any private collection beside a museum collection. Still i admire her paintings, because there is no artist alike and her works are highly original.

In her paintings, work on paper and painterly installations Hadassah Emmerich interweaves varied themes such as identity and the body, representations of the exotic and the dialogue between abstraction and figuration.
Emmerich selects material from a variety of sources including vintage photography books, texts, advertising and art historical reference books, which are fused together through a process of photomontage which is then transferred onto the canvas using a combination of painting and printing.
Negotiating a universe where tropical colors merge effortlessly with cold grey tones, where graphic silhouettes inhabit ephemeral spaces and where references to modernist painting are incorporated into urban space, Emmerich creates a fictionalized narrative in which ‘multiculturalism’ is questioned in a painterly sense.
Displaying monumental and immersive qualities, the viewer is confronted with a visceral immediacy, urging to engage conceptually as well as physically. In continuing the legacy of female ‘pop’ artists such as Evelyn Axell or Angela Garcia, Emmerich pursues a practice that combines a bold visual language with an investigation into the undercurrent of visual culture.

David Bade (1970)

It must have been round 2002 that i first saw a sculpture by David Bade. It was the Yellow one/ BIG FISH DAY  that was placed at the entrance of the GEM, the contemporary museum next door to the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.  A bright yellow sculpture with a stork ( weapon of THE HAGUE) in top .

My personal thought is that this is a monstrosity and over the nearly 20 years now that it is at this spot i never learned to appreciate it. Last week i walked by it , looked at the sculpture and noticed it was worn at some places and a thin layer of green algae is covering the sculpture, so perhaps in short time the sculpture will be removed from its spot and placed elsewhere. So far the negative on David Bade, because one always must have an open mind and when i leafed through the 2010 David Bade catalogue i was impressed….powerful sculptures, great paintings and drawings which reminded me of the great Expressionist painters . So there is a shift towards the positive. It does not mean that i now admire the sculpture outside GEM, but i definitely makes me look different to David Bade his art. Bruno Perrament ( 1962)

Over 1200 blogs now and this is a first. I could not find a single portrait of Bruno Perrament. A french contemporary artist who had one of his first important shows at the GEM museum in Den Haag. A very nice exhibition curated by Roel Arkesteijn. With the exhibition a great Perrament publication was published at that time. The publication is now available at http://www.ftn-books.com .Perrament was and is one of my favorite new contemporary artists and when i look at his works some 15 years later. I must confess that i am still a fan. The way he mixes abstraction with realistic scenes and landscapes makes his work stand out from many of his contemporaries. Intriguing, sexy and impressive are his larger paintings. If you are looking for a great introduction to his work , the UPON THE RIVERS catalogue is a great starting point.

Aaron van Erp (1978)

No better text on the works by Aaron van Erp than the one which was published on the occasion of his Gemeentemusem/ GEM exhibition from 2008. It looks a really long time ago, but nowadays his works are more or less the same. Their subjects hardly any different and the way they are painted has not changed at all. van Erp is an important “young” painter and i will be following his career from a short distance because his paintings fascinate me.

“Horrible things frequently also have a funny side.” This is how Aaron van Erp (b. 1978) explains how his paintings, despite their often brutal subjects, can raise a laugh thanks to their bizarre titles. Since graduating from the St Joost school of art and design in ’s-Hertogenbosch in 2001, Aaron van Erp has become a rising star of the art world. His weird paintings have been acquired for numerous collections in the Netherlands and abroad, including the trendsetting Saatchi collection. Aaron van Erp opens his first ever one-man museum exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag: an overview of paintings and drawings produced since leaving art school, with the emphasis on his most recent work.

Jars of peanut butter

Van Erp’s paintings often include familiar objects from the world around us: shopping trolleys, meatballs, jars of peanut butter, supermarket bags and washing machines. These are located in bare, desert-like landscapes or huge empty interiors. His colourful pictures sometimes refer to well-known paintings of the past (The Meatball Eaters, 2000) or appear to allude to social issues like terrorism, problems in the health care system or child abuse. His painting The Child Tamer (2006), for example, featuring a shadowy figure keeping order with a whip, immediately suggests child abuse. But, despite its sadistic undertone, the work is painted in a humorous way. The green boots of the ‘tamer’, the title, the use of colour and the absurd setting all undermine the sense of violence.

Theme

Another important theme in Van Erp’s paintings is that of victims versus attackers. Medical Personnel at the Meatball Plantation (2005/06) is a good illustration: at first glance, the painting appears to show Red Cross staff attending to a victim. Look closer and you find that they are actually tearing the victim apart and turning his flesh into meatballs to hang in the leafless trees. Dividing lines between good and evil are blurred; saviours can also be attackers and vice versa.

Influence

As well as inspiration from everyday life, the paintings betray the influence of artists such as James Ensor and Francis Bacon. This is apparent in the amorphous figures, the artist’s palette, a certain surreal atmosphere, and the fragmentary way in which Van Erp paints his figures. His social and political commitment is akin to that of Francisco Goya, who also produced works denouncing violence, constraints on freedom of thought, and human suffering.

Raymond Pettibon…. Brush Life (2002)

In 2002 Raymond Pettibon made the opening exhibition for the GEM museum. The exhibition was curated by Roel Arkesteijn. Pettibon worked day and night to include over 600 drawings and designs, but he finished in time to make it a memorable exhibition. After the opening he had time to make and finish 3 comic books, which were printed ( copied ) and stapled “in house” by Chantal Sieuw. These 3 titles are since their publication date highly sought after and collectable Pettibon books , because the edition was only 100 copies for each title these are rare editions to any art collection.

The edition is numbered xx/100

The Brush Life blog is the third and final in the series on Pettibon’s GEM publications and because of its autobiographical character it is by far the most important one and has become rare and expensive. For more information please contact me . POA.

Gerard Petrus Fieret (1924-2009)

Because i visited the Gemeentemuseum on Sunday and i had another hour available i decided to visit the Fieret exhibition in the GEM museum next door , curated in an excellent way by Wim van Sinderen and giving more insight in the person Fieret was and the art/photographs he made. When you have finished the exhibition and continue within the GEM and go downstairs you pass a long corridor in which the portraits of Fieret, which were taken throughout his life are presented. Portraits by Willem Diepraam,  Koos Breukel, Helena van der Kraan and many others make a great portrait gallery on Gerard Petrus Fieret. Of course this is not the best quality, but here are the photographs. They give a great impression of the colorful figure Fieret was.
