Mark Brusse (continued)

Mark Brusse (1937), a renowned sculptor, ceramicist, painter, and graphic artist, has resided in Paris since 1961. His father was the acclaimed writer and journalist Marie Joseph Brusse (1873-1941), and among his six brothers, Jan and Peter Brusse (correspondents), filmmaker Ytzen Brusse, architect Henk Brusse, and actor Kees Brusse are well known. He spent his youth in Bergen (NH) and after his father’s death, in Nijmegen where his stepfather’s house burned down during the bombing in 1944. Brusse enrolled in the academy in Arnhem in 1958 (residing at Parkstraat 20). During his studies, he developed a friendship with Klaas Gubbels, Rik van Bentem, Ted Felen, and co-founded NADA, a collective with the aim of breaking into Amsterdam’s art scene. He succeeded and received a grant from the Maison Descartes to live and work in Paris for eight months. In Paris, he encountered the Nouveaux Réalistes (led by Pierre Restany), which included Jean Tinguely and Yves Klein.

In the following years, he spent months abroad regularly, such as in New York (1965) where he met Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and others, on the recommendation of Cees Nooteboom, Berlin (1970), Japan (1983), Korea (1983), and Benin in Africa.

Death, decay, and their handling in non-Western cultures play a significant role in Brusse’s work, often described as poetic. The Japanese culture, in particular, has had a lasting influence on his art. He works extensively in ceramics and stone, creating wooden assemblages. Additionally, he employs various graphic techniques and creates large paintings.

One of Brusse’s most recognized works is “Hommage a Piet Mondriaan” from 1965, which is housed in the Stedelijk Museum.

Eva Besnyö (1910-2003)

Born in Hungary, educated by Pecsi and advized to continue her education in Berlin she met John Fernhout, the son of Charley Toorop and married him and became a dutch citizen. She worked and lived practically her entire life in the Netherlands and because of the contacts she made through her husband she became one of the most important artist photographers of her time. She contributed to many publications with her excellent photographs and for the DOLLE MINA movement ( Womens Liberation movement) she was the house photographer. Personally i find her 50’s and early sixties photographs the most intriguing . They stand out from the rest. I was surprised to find so many books with her photographs in my inventory but one has to be mentioned separately. Eva Besnyö in Bergen is special.

Mark Brusse a dutch artist and world famous in….France

Mark Brusse has been living in Paris/France now for a very long time , but he originated from the Netherlands, where he started his career as an artist in the 60’s. He is described as a “poetic” artist and works with a multitude of materials. Painting, drawing, etching and making sculptures….. a multi talented artist who was far less appreciated in his home country than in France, where has has lived now for most of his life. This is the reason why many more publications in French can be found on this artist than there are in dutch. The strength of Brusse is his simplicity. Whith a few lines, a small drawing or some well chosen colors he draws your attention into the work and because this poetic simplicity he persuades you to like and admire it. In recent months i myself experienced on at least 2 occasions the strength of his works. The first time was at auction at the Venduehuis where the BLUE SHACK was sold.

Mark Brusse… “the blue shed”

About 4 weeks ago there was an auction at Venduehuis in which the complete company collection of Imtech was sold. Among the lots were several works by Mark Brusse. There was this one painting called the BLUE SHED which was very impressive . Excellent and because of its simplicity spectacular. The outlines of a blue shed and in the background just one sombre color made it very powerful. Yesterday, i remembered the painting and decided to list the small collection of Mark Brusse titles i bought last year from a collector. Some rather obscure titles among them and because of these special titles, they should be of interest to other collectors.

Take a peek at them and go to www.ftn-books.com for more information.
