Possibly the best known member of the NEW FIGURATION mouvement in the Netherlands is Lucassen. If i must describe his art, it is a mix between geometric colorfield and daily household objects like screens, plants and kitchenware, add some comics into it , stirr it and you have an early Lucassen painting .
Later he developed this style into a very authentic and recognizable personal style. Making abstract compositions with shapes, numbers and letters. These paintings are intuitive compositions combining , more or less at random elements from his direct surroundings, but these can not be recognized as such. The compositions, titles, execution are like small poems executed on canvas.
www.ftn-books.com, has a large selection of Lucassen titles including the catalogues he made for his galerie Espace exhibitions.
For me it is still a mystery why Theys has not become world famous with his paintings , but remained one of the lesser known Belgian painters from his generation. Yes, there are Raveel, de Keyzer and Elias. And yes , many people know that he is one of the founders of the NEW FIGURATION mouvement, but for most that is all and they really do not remember enough his qualities as an artist. He was a gifted sculptor , but above all he could depict women in a very sensuous way and include so many abstract elements in the painting that from a distance it almost looked completely abstract.
For those that admire Theys …there are frequently auctions held which include his works and the nice thing about them is that in most cases it is still very affordable and beside their quality as a work of art, are highly decorative colorful elements in any interior. Take notice of Yvan Theys whenever there is an auction or gallery exhibition. He was an artist who deserves to be known and appreciated by many. I am not the greatest fan of Roger Raveel, but occasionally i can appreciate his works. Specially the Beervelde project in the cellar corridors together with his friends from the Nieuwe Figuratie is a highlight. From his early days he has held exhibitions in the Netherlands and therefore a nice set of publications was published in the 60’s and 70’s by galerie Espace, who represented Raveel during these decades. Raveel is one of the great artists in Belgium, but beyond the Belgian borders his works are scarce. There are some in the Stedelijk Museum and van Abbemuseum, but those are the only ones i know of. Given the fact that he is not very well known outside Belgium and the Netherlands, i was surprised to find the number of publications i managed to collect over the years and which are now in my inventory.
