Sculpture 10 days… Day 8 ..Richard Deacon (1949)

Perhaps a little bit forgotten, but still a very important sculptor is Richard Deacon. His works can be found in the Bonnefanten Museum and the Caldic collection ( all great sculptors can be found there;-)) and in the MUHKA, but you really have to search on the internet to find Deacon’s larger works on show. The constructions he makes are not intuitive , but constructed of little parts and pieces, screwed and bolted to each other making a construction typical Deacon. This is not an easy on the eye sort of art, but when you take your time , see the work interact with its surrounding, you must recognize that these are great sculptures. Sculpture 10 days… Day 7 ..Sol LeWitt (1928-2007)

Day 7 is for me one of the most important ones. People following this blog know of my admiration for Sol LeWitt and there are 2 sculptures i would like to point out. Both have my personal interest, because these can be found nearby and were made not too far apart in time from each other. One is in the Caldic collection, the other in the collection of the Gemeentemuseum. The first is on permanent view, the work in the collection of the Gemeentemuseum is rarely exhibited , because of the shear size. You need a ground floor of roughly 40 x 20 meters to show all element together. This work, Serial project no. 1, set B, was acquired in the eighties, but is rarely shown, because it needs space and space is a rare commodity within the buildings of the Gemeentemuseum. Perhaps now that they have covered the inner garden , they could dedicate this space to the sculpture? it would make great use of this space and would be a far better solution to use this covered area instead of placing some tables for a coffee shop and a little bookstand.

To end….Gemeentemuseum make the Serial project no.1 set B visible for all. Make it on permanent view please.

Sculpture 10 days… Day 6 ..Per Kirkeby (1938)

Ever since Rudi Fuchs for the first time presented his friend and artist Per Kirkeby in the Gemeentemuseum , i have been an admirer. First and foremost an admirer of his paintings. But when in the early nineties a brick sculpture was realized in the inner garden of the Gemeentemuseum i became an instant fan of his sculptures too. His brick sculptures are typical Kirkeby and the use of bricks make these sculptures stand out from the others of his time. There is another sculpture specially made for the Caldic collection which i admire too.

Sculpture 10 days… Day 5 ..Carel Visser ( 1928-2015)

One sculptor you must mention in these sculpture 10 days is Carel Visser. 2 years ago Visser died, but his works remain and are present in every important dutch museum collection. His works are in many cases ” assemblages of found material, but during the last 3 decade of his life he made statues from Corten steel and these are the works that can be found frequently in many places in the Netherlands . His sculptures from window screens are less suitable to be presented in the streets ,

but these are in the museums and can be seen there. It is time for a large retrospective on his works, because beside his sculpture there is also his print making in which he excelled. For many publications on Carel Visser please visit www.ftn-books.com

Sculpture 10 days… Day 4 ..Tony Cragg ( 1949)

Tony Cragg, british and famous in the Nineties, but nowadays he almost looks forgotten. No more great shows , nor great assignments…..but his works are still there. Present in great collections like the Boymans van Beuningen, Tate and Caldic collection. Maybe it is time to rediscover Cragg, because his works are highly original and well worth seeing. In many cases the scale is large and because these large sculptures can not be dismissed they often impress.
