Tapio Wirkkala (continued)

The masterful Finnish designer and glassmaker, Tapio Wirkkala, has graced the Netherlands with his exceptional exhibitions. However, none were quite as significant as his showcase at the Stedelijk Museum in 1976. The Stedelijk Museum showed a keen interest in Wirkkala’s work and acquired numerous stunning pieces from him and his wife, Rut Bryk. Interestingly, Bryk had her own exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in 1970, even before Wirkkala himself. The catalogues for both exhibitions were skillfully designed by Wim Crouwel and have now become highly coveted collector’s items.

Wirkkala’s profound designs for Iittala continue to be in production to this day. I only wish I had more publications on Wirkkala and his wife, as they are quite rare. The few I have were all obtained from the Stedelijk Museum. One is a monograph while the other two are group exhibitions focused on Finnish glass and design.

Please visit www.ftn-books.com for more on Wirkkala and other great design artists.

Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) an Iittala visionary.

Like Andries Copier in Netherlands, you probably have seen and perhaps are even using the designs by Tapio Wirkkala. Born in Finland his designs are certainly influenced by Scandinavia design. They are without any unnecessary details , clean and clear. Most of them have been published by Iittala and among them there are such iconic designs like the Thule and Tapio glass series .

But he also had his free projects in which he developed beautiful ceramics. Wirkkala had a solo exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in 1976 for which Wim Crouwel designed the exquisite catalogue. The catalogue itself has become rare since there have been a worldwide recognition of Wirkkala as a truly original designer and artist, but www.ftn-books.com has this catalogue available together with other catalogues on Finnish designs and art.

Alvar Aalto

First tine i ever heard of Alvar Aalto was when i bought a vase for my wife….design by Alvar Aalto. When i got further read on and got acquainted with the person Aalto i noticed that he was a tremendous architect and a great furniture designer . That is the time i started collecting the books on Aalto and in the last decades i built a great collection of books for myself. When you are such an avid collector it happens once in a while that encounter a book which you already have in your collection and these books were the first to appear in my own store at www.ftn-books.com

( look at the similarities between the shape of the vase and the buildings)

Through the years i visited, whenever in the neighbourhood, the architectural masterpieces by Aalto in Germany, but never had the chance to go to Finland where the main part of his buildings is to be found. Maybe in the future, but in the meantime i have my Aalto books.

So check my store when you are collecting Aalto or architectural books and maybe you can complete your collection with the ones on offer.
