A.R. Penck in Amsterdam (1988)

A.R. Penck

The year is 1988 and Penck was exhibiting in Den Haag ands AMsterdam at the same time. We witnessed at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag a fierce drum session at the opening of his exhibition and at the same time we could sell a beautiful box with original photographs taken at the opening of the gallery Aschenbach exhibition. Photographs by Scholtens and Schrijver. Now this scarce item which was published in an edition of only 20 copies by Stok & Hollanders has become for sale at www.ftn-books.com. A truly remarkable Penck collectors item and since this is probably the only time i can sell this i have documented the box so it can be shared with all Penck enthousiasts.

Frans Haks (2008)

After many years , Frans Haks waved goodbye in 2008 to his beloved Groninger Museum and with this fareweel a beautiful publication designed by Swip Stolk was published. In it , contributions by all that mattered during the Eighties and Nineties in the dutch Museum world. Contributions by Wim Crouwel, Henk van Os, Peter Struycken and of course Swip Stolk, make this book very special. A well deserved farewell present to Frans Haks who made  the Groninger Mudeum one of the most important and trend setting museums in the Netherlands. Micha Klein special ( continued )

A few years ago i wrote a blog on Micha Klein. Klein is slightly younger than Erwin Olaf , but has a carrer which resembles the career of Erwin Olaf. Both are embraced by interior decorators all over the world for their large blown up photographs, but where Olaf creates an atmosphere of classic “SIXTIES” scenes and dark historic scenes, Klein is much more “light” in his compositions.

Futuristic, colorful and modern scenes are his trademark. A few months ago i found another copy of the Micha Klein / Groninger Museum catalogue and put it up for sale, but months later an even far more scarce item was added to the Micha Klein inventory. It is the Micha Klein exhibition poster. Design by Swip Stolk and of a rare quality. The poster is MINT and is perfect for framing. Swip Stolk meets Keith Haring (1992)

This is still possibel, since 2 year after his death the Groninger Museum used one of Keith Haring Subway drawings as the leading image for all the publications that were published around the theme of Subway graffiti art.  An exhibition which was held at the Groninger Museumin 1992.

Swip Stolk interpreted in his own special way this drawing and transformed into a spectacular exhibition poster. A few years earlier Stolk took an interest in graffiti art and integrated this art form into a poster devoted to the collection of the Groninger Museum. Micha Klein (1964)

Micha Klein in s probably the first dutch Computer artist. He studied at the Rietveld academy and was there the firts to complete his studies as a video / computer artist. Using the dance scene as one of his first sources of inspiration he soon became known for his use of bright colors and the use of  “beautiful People” .

His art stands out since you can immediately see that his photographs or stills are worked over by computer. The result is an artificial kind of photograph which does not corresponds with reality. Together with Erwin Olaf and Ruud van Empel he forms a new generation of photographers who use the computer as an extra lense to make their photographs perfect. www.ftn-books.com has the Groninger Museum publication on Micha Klein available.

Swip Stolk (1944-2019)

 

Schermafbeelding 2019-03-12 om 11.13.44Swip Stolk is certainly one of the great names in dutch graphic design. He died last sunday at the age of 75 . There are some iconic designs by Stolk that are worldwide famous. Specially the peeing poster for the Serrano exhibition drew attention from all over the world. There was a typical Swip Stolk styke of design. He broke with the minimal designs of the sixties ( Crouwel and Wissing) and invented his own exuberant style of design which was soon to become the “house style” of the Groninger Museum for which museum he made for nearly two decades many important book and publication designs.

Holland in Vorm 1987

I remember it well. It was the first time i met with Jan van Capellen, the responsible person who had the same  function at the Boymans van Beuningen Museum as i had with the Gemeentemuseum at that time and we carried box after box with one of the heaviest catalogues ever produced by the combined (important) dutch museums. Within the project the Stedelijk Museum, Haags Gemeentemuseum, Arnhem Gemeentemuseum, Museum Boymans van Beuningen and Centraal Museum Utrecht all participated and all had a different approach and subject on dutch design. The overall design of posters and catalogues was executed by Anthon Beeke and Swip Stolk. Unfortunately the catalogue was at that time not the success the museums had hoped it would be , but now…. over 30 years later, it is a sought after collectable catalogue. One that inspires and was at the start of the dutch design mouvement which is now collected all over the world. Catalogue and exhibition posters are available at www.ftn-books.com

Alessandro Mendini

Because of a recent sale , i was reminded that there are so many important designs made by this master of ALCHIMIA. The design group that made the most remarkable designs in the eighties. Beside these designs he made for Alchimia, he also was a gifted architect and book designer. A multi talented artist who made some of the most iconic designs and in the Netherland was partly responsible for the architecture of the Groninger Museum. The Groninger Museum got his new building in 1994. At that time it was one of the most spectacular Museum buildings in the world.

This was possibly the building that paved the way for many more avant garde museum buildings. For instance the Gehry building which was made for the Guggenheim museum was opened in 1997, 3 year after the opening of the Groninger Museum. Since, the Groninger Museum always has had a special interest in design and their own publications have for the greatest part been of the highest possible quality. In many of them Swip Stolk had a role and they always show the influence of Alessandro Mendini .
