Sometimes you know a book exists, never seen it, but from stories heard and publications read there is only one conclusion…it must be out there…somewhere.

Cervo Pendulum by Pieter Laurens Mol is such a publication. I learned the book was printed by Rosbeek. At the times i visited this printer in the late Nineties i had never seen a copy. All the times i visited book fairs, markets etc….no copy found. But now finally after over 24 years  i have a copy at www.ftn-books.com available.

This book is rare, that is for certain, but it is also important. It is one of those little artists books which is worth collecting. Printed by Rosbeek and published on the occasion of the opening of the new medical faculty building of the University of Utrecht. Edition is said to be 250 copies only and of these few will have survived. Text is in dutch and in english, which makes this important book accessible to english collectors too.  An absolute “must have” for the Pieter Laurens Mol collector and it is not very likely that it will show up again in the coming years.

Sigurður Guðmundsson / Gudmundsson(1942)…humor in art

My admiration for Gudmundsson started when i first saw his “paper boat” in an edition of only 20 copies. The reason i was attracted to this work was because the same boat was depicted in a painting by Massimo Rao and for years both works were combined in my living room.

Now i have only the boat nearby and it has not lost its appeal in 20+ years. The edition was bought after i had traded in a Pieter Laurens Mol which was not the right piece of art in the right place and so the Gudmundsson was bought to make the Rao more complete and it stayed in my collection. It has pure humor and because of its presentation in a show case it still has a lot of style. This edition is only 20 copies and it was bought at DE EXPEDITIE in Amsterdam and is of course sold out now for decades , but i know of a special edition of a unique life size large paper boat which is/was in the collection of the AMC Amsterdam which is even more unique than the smaller i have on my windowsill.

Pieter Laurens Mol (1946) an artists artist

Pieter Laurens Mol has had his exhibitions over the last 4 decades and is appreciated by many of his fellow conceptual artists, but is lesser known by the greater public and collectors alike. His works are a hard act to follow. The concept is always there, but with being there it is almost always impossible to truly like and enjoy the work because of its appearance. Mol has created his own dreamlike world in which he lives and which produces now and then some great imaginative art, but beside his strong circle of admirers he stays an artists artist.

This dreamlike world and control over his world, resulted in some great publications of which many of them are more or less complete artists books. Linnen bound , some numbered or signed make them highly collectable books and www.ftn-books.com has some of them available.  You never can fathom the depths of his works, but a nice way to start with his world is to learn something about it by reading these books.
