Joachim Bandau (1936)

Schermafbeelding 2020-10-04 om 16.15.57

This German sculptor is from the generation of LeWitt, Andre and Judd, but outside Germany his minimal works are not that well now. Thanks to the gallery PHOEBUS in Rotterdam, he was introduced to the Dutch collectors and a large retrospectibve in 1990 established his name in the low countries.

I love his works…sober, playful and strict at the same time. At auction i almost was lucky enought to acquire a work by Bandau, but a better bid won the item. Perhaps in the future who knows, because i will be following his career, exhibitions and the works at auction.

Paul Van Biervliet

Schermafbeelding 2019-07-10 om 15.52.47

I bought the book , because it looked to me as a very nice publication on a Belgian artist, but surprisingly the paintings and drawings within the book i found fascinating enough to read the book. It appeared that van Biervliet his works have been on show at the Muhka and that one of his first exhibitions was at the gallery that was one of the very first to present the works by Luc Tuymans.  I can not explain why the artist attracted me with his art.

Some of the early paintings reminded me of the golden ones by Rajlich or maybe it was the resemblance i noticed with some of the drawings by Marcel van Eeden i do not know, but what i do know is that Van Biervliet is original in his art  and because of the architectural compositions his art in not too abstract, which can be one of the reasons for many to appreciate it. The book on Paul van Biervliet is available at www.ftn-books.com

Marlene Dumas and the MD publication

Schermafbeelding 2018-12-09 om 16.17.49

Another blog on Dumas….. an artist i admire very much and who’s name is now settled in the art world as one of the great living contemporay artists. It is important these last few words….. This last sentence shows the appreciation of Dumas worldwide, but still there are institutions like eBay, Pinterest, Facebook and Instagram that are so shortsighted and puritan that they can not recognize a great work of art because it shows some nudity. It is allowed to say and write the most horrible things and even show complete massacres on these sites but a great work of art is removed because it shows a nipple or a womans breast. Unfair for the artist and it shows the puritan nature of those who manage the greatest sites and social network on this earth. So specially for those of you who like myself still admire Marlene Dumas and her great watercolours , here are some examples from her MD publication which was made for her travelling exhibition and showed at MUHKA, Henie Onstad and the Camden Art center. The book is available at www.ftn-books.com and lets please keep an open mind on nudity in photographs and paintings.

Sculpture 10 days… Day 8 ..Richard Deacon (1949)

Schermafbeelding 2017-06-08 om 13.54.57

Perhaps a little bit forgotten, but still a very important sculptor is Richard Deacon. His works can be found in the Bonnefanten Museum and the Caldic collection ( all great sculptors can be found there;-)) and in the MUHKA, but you really have to search on the internet to find Deacon’s larger works on show. The constructions he makes are not intuitive , but constructed of little parts and pieces, screwed and bolted to each other making a construction typical Deacon. This is not an easy on the eye sort of art, but when you take your time , see the work interact with its surrounding, you must recognize that these are great sculptures. Deacon’s books are to be found at www.ftn-books.com
