Adolf Wölfli was a Swiss artist who was one of the first artists to be associated with the Art Brut or outsider art label.

Wölfli was born in Bern. He was abused both physically and sexually as a child, and was orphaned at the age of 10. He thereafter grew up in a series of state-run foster homes. He worked as a Verdingbub (indentured child labourer) and briefly joined the army. He often attempted to perform sexual acts on young girls – often getting away unpunished. Eventually, he was caught in the act and institutionalized for his doings. After being freed, he was re-arrested for a similar offense and in 1895 was admitted to the Waldau Clinic, a psychiatric hospital in Bern where he spent the rest of his adult life. He was very disturbed and sometimes violent on admission, leading to him being kept in isolation for his early time at hospital. He suffered from psychosis, which led to intense hallucinations and that shows in his works.

The above text comes from WIKIPEDIA, …i did not know that he was conviceted for child abuse, but because of my interest in the Stedelijk MUseum i had encountered his publication for a Wolfli exhibition before and not only the Stedelijk showed an interest in this highly original artist. In the mid Seventies there was a tour which showed his works in Switzerland and Germany ( catalogue available at www.ftn-books.com). If there is one artist i feel who is connected to this kind of work and maybe inspired it must be Gunter Brus. There is so much to discover in these paintings and drawings by Wolfli that this artist deserves to be known and remembered for his art and not for anything else.

Bernd and Hilla Becher- Furnaces

Schermafbeelding 2017-11-23 om 13.44.58

It must have been about 15 years ago that my father asked me if i had an idea for a Christmas present and because i knew of a book i could order with a 40% discount i told him that i wanted a special publication by Bernd and Hilla Becher / Hochofen. Published by Schirmer Mosel in 2002 in an edition of only 100 copies containing a beautiful original photograph of a row of Furnaces.

These industrial scenes are typical for the Bechers and because of these scenes of Industrial complexes and lonely rural buildings. their photography is highly recognizable. The photograph i own is one of the most cherished works i have in my collection. It is not the value which makes it special , but the idea that it was one of the last gifts my father gave me. Since i have been collecting Becher items and one of the best i found was a poster , published by the Josef Albers Museum in 2010 and available at www.ftn-books.com

Juergen Teller ( 1964 ) and Louis Vuitton

Schermafbeelding 2017-12-10 om 11.02.32
For Nicolas Ghesquiere first Fall 2014 womenswear collection, Louis Vuitton invited German photographer Juergen Teller for a distinctive interpretation of the collection.

Photographed from the House’s Parisian headquarters, with intimate views of the Seine and Eiffel tower, twelve models grace the Fall 2014 women’s collection in edgy attitude.

In this selection, glorious smooth, full-grain leather is contrasted with hybrid materials. Bold, bright colours are juxtaposed with muted halftones. Hand-crafted artisanal techniques are updated with high-tech twist. It was my luck to find a , in pristini/ still sealed condition special edition of this important Louis Vuitton Publication. I did not want to open it, because a collector should want it in this condition, but found some excellent photo’s by Teller on Google to support the quality of this special LOUIS VUITTON edition and perhaps this is the present you are looking for for Christmas.

Rhythm by Peter Pontiac and Ray Ahn

rhythm

Because i have a lifetime admiration for Peter Pontiac i always have carried a large inventory on the artist, but what i neglected to buy for my collection is the “Rhythm” book by Peter Pontiac which has a great part of his comics in one publication. Because of an order by an Australian customer i found one with a colleague and i must say i am very impressed with this publication. It shows in over 400 pages exactly what makes his work stand out from others from his generation. Bold, controversial and in many cases it shows the raw world the main character lives in. Beside the stories this book is beautifully published and does grace to the stories by Pontiac. I told my customer that i had found the book for his collection and beside the fact that he was delighted he pointed out an Australian publication on Ray Ahn / THE ART OF RAY AHN which is still available in a limited edition of only 200 copies at www.starmanbooks.com  for Australian Dollar 375,–

You can view an unboxing video over here:

Of course other Pontiac publications are available at www.ftn-books.com
