van Hall is from a generation that rediscovered realism in painting. Specially they were interested in the human body.  Peter Klashorst founded the group “After Nature” and soon after was joined by Jurriaan van Hall who also is a painter” pur sang”

Jurriaan van Hall (1962) is a painter and sculptor. He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, the Rijksakademie voor beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam and the Royal College of Art in London. Together with Peter Klashorst and Bart Domburg he founded the notorious artists’ collective, After Nature, which created a commotion in the early 1990s with its controversial painting performances. The artists’ nudes, still lifes, self-portraits and landscapes, painted with loose brushstrokes and intense use of colour, prompted a major revival of figurative painting, with exhibitions in the Netherlands and the United States. Praised and vilified – but never overlooked – the group disbanded in 1993 and the artists went their separate ways.

Looking at his work I find the same approach and “rawness” that i also see in the works of Freud. The human body is not perfect and this is shown without any holding back by van Hall.

It takes some time to recognize the quality of his works but look a little longer and you will discover these paintings being timeless and his painting, raw, blunt, colourful and…..perfect. The above publication by de Lakenhal is available at www.ftn-books.com

the Analogy between Jan Saudek and Katharina Behrend

When you literally strip all from your subject and leave her standing in front of a chosen background there is not much difference.

There is 70 years between these 2 photographs but when you tell me it is only 10 years i would believe it too. Katharina Eleonore Behrend made her photographs between 1904 and 1928 and the entire series which was still within her family was left to the Stichting Nederlands Fotoarchief in Leiden. The series shows an artistic point of view on daily life in the beginning of the 20th century and gives a perfect impression of the Netherlands around 1910. The art nude is somehow different….. it is classic in its pose and shows why photography can be great art too. Beautiful light and the perfect intriguing picture.

Christie van der Haak (1950)

One of the first artist from Den Haag that i met and still admire is Christie van der Haak. A few years ago , in 2015 she won deservedly the Ouborgprijs and since her name has become even more famous in the art world. Just take a look at her great site and judge for your self

http://www.christievanderhaak.nl

Discover why her art is appreciated by so many in the art world. The patterns she “invents” and the layers she uses to make her compositions look very classic like patterns from the old days, but put them in a different surroundings, they become great new works of art.

I remember that one of her first exhibitions was the one in the van Abbemuseum curated by Rudi Fuchs, where she presented Madonna paintings. Paintings with layer over layer . patterns overpainted the typical classic madonna .

Later she presented her paintings in the Lakenhal and the Gemeentemuseum where the late Henk Overduin was an admirer and the one who initiated an exhibition with her.
