Bridget Riley (continued)

A captivating exhibition featuring the enigmatic paintings of Bridget Riley is currently on display at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. The large, hypnotic canvasses showcase intricate waves of vibrant color patterns that draw the viewer in. Riley’s art is one that requires time and exposure to truly appreciate. It was in the early sixties when her art career took flight, heavily influenced by renowned artist Vasarely. In no time, she emerged as one of the leaders of the op-art movement, and in 1965 she had her first major exhibition at the MOMA in New York. She was also prominently featured in the prestigious RESPONSIVE EYE exhibition. In the years since, she has honed her craft and developed a highly distinct style, diverging from traditional op-art techniques. Today, her name evokes immediate recognition in art circles. The Gemeentemuseum Den Haag has a special connection with Riley, having hosted an impressive exhibition of her works a decade ago. An exclusive leperello was published in conjunction with the event and is still available at www.ftn-books.com.

Martin Rous (1939)

Rous

Another decade or so…..and i predict that Martin Rous Jr. will be one of the most wanted artists in the Netherlands. Rous has stayed true to his abstract devisions of space and surface. Using canvas , paper and prints to make his message clear to the viewer. In the beginning i did not like the works by Martin Rous, but over time i learned to look at these fascinating works and objects. Learning to see the subtile differences in using lines and dividing space and now i am actively searching to buy some of his works. Wether it is a drawing or a large painting….. It does not matter whatever comes first has my interest. A good thing to know is that i already have a small library with his books and the duplicate copies are available at www.ftn-books.com.

Olphaert den Otter (1955)

First time i encountered work by Olphaert den Otter , was at the galerie van Kranendonk in the mid Nineties. After this occasion i saw works by den Otter in several group exhibitions ( if i remember well one at the Haags Gemeentemuseum). In a mix of realism and surrealism , den Otter presents his paintings and always surprises. One can discover several layers in his works and they never stop to amaze. In the last 2 years some of his paintings have become on sale at the Venduehuis auction, but i was not lucky enough to win. It shows that den Otter has established himself as one of the commercial succesful artists in the Netherlands, but i will keep trying to win at auction and maybe in the future we can add a work to our collection.

Olphaert den Otter (Poortugaal, 1955) studied at the Willem de Kooning Academie (1976 – 1981). He works with egg tempera, often in large series. One of these, de Refuge Morphology series consisting of 127 works, was exhibited in 2008 in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. From time to time, Den Otter creates murals in pastel on location (Malta Contemporary Art and the KetelFactory, Schiedam) and animations. Alongside his activities as visual artist, he also sings countertenor in the Retorisch Kwartet and frequently lectures on cultural and philosophical themes.

It takes some time to appreciate the sculptures by Ruud Kuijer, but as his scultures grew in their sizes i started to admire more and more his works. It must have been in the mid Eighties that we once met, shook hands and had a short conversation, but i never have met him since and i did not search for his works until a few years ago i saw pictures of his WATERWERKEN series.

Impressive, complex, extremely large sized sculptures that reminded me in their size and presence of the Richard Serra THE MATTER OF TIME, which is also extremely large and can only be admired within or from a distance. The Waterwerken series can be found on the Ruud Kuijer site, but there is much more to the sculptures by Ruud Kuijer. You can find some nice publications at www.ftn-books.com in which his earlier sculptures can be found and admired including the recently Centraal Museum catalogue from1990.kuijer centaal

The sculptor Ruud Kuijer is known for his abstract sculptures made from ordinary materials such as wood, concrete, iron, rope and threaded rod. His Waterworks project, a line of seven large sculptures situated along the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal in Utrecht, has attracted a lot of attention. Kuijer’s work is involved in many contemporary sculpture exhibitions, private- and museum collections and projects worldwide.
