Sonia Delaunay (continued)

Working in tandem with her husband, artist Robert Delaunay, Delaunay frequently strived to create a distinct style of painting. Collaboratively, they endeavored to embellish the pavilions at the 1937 International Exposition of Arts and Techniques in Modern Life. In addition to her canvases, Delaunay also designed a series of fabrics, wallpaper, furniture, and clothing. Comparable to her paintings, Sonia’s textiles and modern design pieces are characterized by abstract geometry. In a groundbreaking event, Sonia Delaunay became the first woman to be honored with a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in 1964, while she still lived. Her esteemed contributions to the arts also granted her the privilege of being appointed as an officer of the French Legion of Honor in 1975.

www.ftn-books.com has some nice Delaunay titles available.

Albert Gleizes (1881-1953)

A misunderstanding from my part is that i always thought Gleizes to be a Suisse artist, but he isn’t, he is French and that places his works among other French Cubist artist to compare. So not Hodler was the greatest influence on his works, it is that what i thought to be true, but far more other contemporaries from the French art scene like Metzinger, Delaunay and Le Fauconier, who were his sparring partners in art. Self proclaimed founder of Cubism his works are among the best cubist works i know of and these art works build a bridge into the art of the Bauhaus that was more than interested in the ideas by Gleizes. Gleizes has not become the great name in art you should have expected, but became a “niche” artist, who received some special exhibitions in the Netherlands in the last few decades. Not the grand scale exhibitions you would expect with such an important artist. Maybe the future will bring the recognition Gleizes deserves but for the meantime you have only some nice exhibition catalogues which are available at www.ftn-books.com

Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979)

Sonia Delaunay… I always thought she was french, but she lived in France because she married Robert Delaunay, but was born in Ukrainia. She became known as the cofounder of the Orphism art movement, noted for its use of strong colors and geometric shapes. Her work extends to painting, textile design and stage set design. She was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre in 1964.

In short she was one of the first female modern artists to became known all over the world. Her patterns, tissues and paintings have been of influence to many modern artists after her, including the hard edge and kinetic artists who combined her use of colors and patterns into their own works of art. Art Deco fashion could not have existed without Delaunay tissues she had fabricated for her costumes.

A fascinating artist who’s patterns and paintings look still very modern and one of those artists who made her publications very special by using serigraphs, lithographs and pochoir prints as a cover. Making these publications stand out from the others and turning them into very desirable collectable items. There are a few available at www.ftn-books.com

Maurice Estève (1904-2001)

It is not always the great artists that appeal to you…In many cases lesser known ones take you by surprise, because of color and composition. Maurice Estève is one of them. Well known in France but hardly known outside of France. During his artistic life he had exhibitions in Many French galeries and even was presented on the Venice Biennale of 1954, but that is about all i can find of foreign exhibitions of this French artist

Starting as an assistant to Robert Delaunay he soon moved away from realism and started to paint in a lyrical abstract way, making his works stand out from his contemporaries. Bonnard, Matisse, Leger and Cezanne were his great examples, but in the end after searching for over 3 decades his lyrical abstract way of painting had become the true Maurice Estève style and he was appreciated for that…..at least in France.

search on Pinterest for Esteve and fortunately there are many examples to be found. An excellent way to meet this artist and see for your self what a great “oeuvre” this artist has.

and do not forget to have a look at the publications currently available at www.ftn-books.com
