Since 1993, Henri Jacobs has maintained his residence and professional practice in Brussels. His formal artistic education comprised studies at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, as well as the St. Joost Academy in Breda and the Academy for Visual Arts in Rotterdam. Throughout his career, his paintings and illustrations have been featured in numerous solo and collective exhibitions across international cultural hubs, including Paris, New York, Venice, and various cities throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. Furthermore, his portfolio features a broad range of public and private art commissions, notably situated in The Hague and Amsterdam.
In 2003, Jacobs initiated an ongoing project involving the creation of daily drawings, which he consistently uploads to his digital platform. This collection culminated in the September 2013 publication of “Henri Jacobs – Journal Drawings,” a comprehensive volume documenting nine years of his creative output. Featuring drawings numbered 001 through 666, the book provides insights into his process by highlighting selected development phases for particular pieces. Through this sequence, the reader can observe both the progression of individual works and the overarching shift in Jacobs’ stylistic approach. The compilation serves as a meticulously curated visual dialogue, allowing the observer to interpret the complex interplay between the images.
Jacobs undertook a two-year research project at Amsterdam’s Rietveld Academy starting in 2009. His tenure began with a practice-led exploration of the concept of the palimpsest, subsequently moving toward an analysis of themes related to creation and destruction, which ultimately matured into an inquiry concerning iconoclasm and idolatry.
