A seminal personality within the twentieth-century avant-garde movement, the poet and theorist Michel Seuphor established the humanist and literary publication *The overview* in 1921, a platform dedicated to championing abstract art, modern music, and experimental visual expression. Throughout his career, he crossed paths with influential figures such as Mondrian, Gropius, Gabo, Moholy-Nagy, and Marinetti; furthermore, he managed the international section of the journal *l’Esprit nouveau* and went on to organize the *Cercle et Carré* art collective in 1930.
His artistic output was defined by a restricted medium: pen and ink on paper, occasionally accented with paper attachments he termed “dessins à lacunes” [lacuna drawings]. By modulating the proximity of parallel lines, he cultivated a sophisticated tonal contrast of light and shadow, resulting in an intricate web of lines that birthed abstract compositions intended to suggest profound, internal realities.
