Robert-Victor-Félix Delaunay entered this world on April 12, 1885, in the city of lights, Paris. After completing his secondary education, he chose to apprentice in a studio that specialized in creating theatrical sets in Belleville. In 1903, he delved into the world of painting, and by the following year, his pieces were being displayed in exhibitions. This trend continued in 1906 at Salon d’Automne and before World War I at the Salon des Indépendants. During this period, he developed a close bond with Henri Rousseau and Jean Metzinger and studied the theories of color presented by Michel-Eugène Chevreul. Delaunay’s style during these years was heavily influenced by Neo-Impressionism and the works of Paul Cézanne. After completing military service from 1907 to 1908 in Laon, Delaunay reconnected with the Cubists upon his return to Paris. It was during this time that his unique style started to surface, and he painted his first Eiffel Tower piece in 1909. In 1910, he tied the knot with fellow painter Sonia Terk, who later became his partner in many joint projects.
The year 1911 marked Delaunay’s initiation into the German art scene, thanks to Vasily Kandinsky, who invited him to be a part of the first Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) exhibition at Moderne Galerie in Munich, owned by Heinrich Thannhauser. It was during this period that he also grew close to Guillaume Apollinaire, Albert Gleizes, and Henri Le Fauconnier. In 1912, Delaunay held his first solo exhibition at Galerie Barbazanges in Paris, and this was also the year he began his famous Windows series. Circular forms and discs became a prominent feature in Delaunay’s paintings starting in 1913.
Between 1914 and 1920, Delaunay resided in Spain and Portugal, where he made friends with the likes of Sergei Diaghilev, Leonide Massine, Diego Rivera, and Igor Stravinsky. He even designed sets for the Ballets Russes in 1918. In 1920, Delaunay returned to Paris and held an exhibition of his work at Galerie Paul Guillaume in 1922. It was also in this year that he started his second Eiffel Tower series. He then explored the theme of runners in 1924 and worked on frescoes for the Palais de l’Ambassade de France at the prestigious Exposition of 1925.
