While his tendency to integrate consumer goods into his art invites comparisons to pop icons like Andy Warhol, César’s core aesthetic was firmly rooted in the formalist lineage of Modernist sculpture, drawing inspiration from masters such as Alberto Giacometti. After honing his skills at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he finished his studies in 1948, he underwent a significant artistic evolution. He once reflected that his initial classical training was fundamentally transformed by his interaction with industrial refuse, noting that immersing himself in factory environments allowed him to master the distinct “language” of discarded materials. His career was marked by prestige, including his role representing France at the 1995 Venice Biennale. Today, his legacy endures through the permanent collections of elite global institutions, such as New York’s MoMA, London’s Tate Gallery, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
