And in doing so, she changed the industry forever.

Born in 1941 in Glossop, England, Westwood trained as a teacher before her life took a sharp turn. In the early 1970s, she partnered with Malcolm McLaren, manager of the Sex Pistols, and together they opened a boutique on London’s King’s Road. The shop went through several names — Let It Rock, Too Fast to Live Too Young to Die, SEX — and became the epicenter of a new movement: punk.

Westwood’s designs during this era were raw and confrontational. Ripped fabrics, safety pins, bondage gear, and provocative slogans turned clothing into a form of protest. She wasn’t just dressing the punk scene — she was helping invent its visual language.

As punk faded, Westwood evolved. Through the 1980s and beyond, she moved into more structured, historically inspired designs, drawing on 18th-century tailoring, corsetry, and traditional British textiles like tweed and tartan. Collections such as Pirates, Buffalo, and Mini-Crini showcased her ability to blend historical reference with rebellious energy.

She launched her own label and eventually showed on runways in Paris and London, earning a reputation as a designer who could be both intellectually rigorous and gleefully subversive.

Westwood was named British Designer of the Year twice, in 1990 and 1991, and was appointed OBE and later DBE for her services to fashion. She became known not only for her clothes but for her outspoken activism — on climate change, human rights, and civil liberties — often using her runway shows and public appearances as platforms for advocacy.

She continued designing until her death in December 2022, leaving behind a body of work that fused punk defiance with couture craftsmanship.

www.ftn-books.com has 2 iconic publications on Westwood now available.

Vivienne Westwood: The Rebel Who Redefined Fashion Vivienne Westwood didn’t set out to become one of the most influential designers in fashion history — she set out to provoke.
