Years prior to the 1940 inauguration of the Walker Art Center, T. B. Walker envisioned a dedicated space for the arts and sciences for his community. A prominent entrepreneur with interests ranging from Minnesota to California timber, Walker started amassing his collection in the 1860s. He later launched the Walker Art Gallery in downtown Minneapolis in 1879\u2014frequently recognized as the inaugural public gallery west of the Mississippi\u2014which showcased various paintings, sculptures, jades, and ceramics. In 1916, he acquired property south of the city center, which he proposed donating to Minneapolis three years later, provided a facility incorporating a library, science center, and gallery was constructed on the site. Following five years of failed discussions, he retracted the proposal and established the Walker Art Galleries in 1927 at the institution\u2019s current location. By the time of his passing in 1928, he had set up a private endowment to ensure the gallery’s continued operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transition from a gallery to a comprehensive art center commenced in 1938, fueled by the collaboration of the local populace, the Walker heirs, and the Minnesota Arts Council (MAC). The MAC, an early iteration of the Minnesota State Arts Board, suggested utilizing the space to display works by living Minnesota creators. By securing federal funding through the Works Progress Administration\u2019s Federal Arts Project and launching a community-wide fundraising appeal, the council gathered sufficient resources to overhaul the galleries and launch an arts education program for all ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The institution finalized this shift during the 1940s by pivoting its focus toward contemporary holdings. Bolstered by ongoing patronage from the Walker family, the museum began acquiring pieces from artists such as Edward Hopper, Irene Rice Pereira, and Franz Marc. This established a lasting dedication to modern creative production, a mandate that facilitated the simultaneous rise of the center\u2019s film, performing arts, and educational initiatives to national prominence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
