A new look and feel for the daily FTN blog and FTN art.

These pages with the daily blogs on “books and art” needed some changes. I had to give the “Piet Dirkx daily” a more prominent spot, the place it deserves and made a new and better focus on FTN art . I found a better template and layout and because of that the items which are for sale are far more easy to access. A search option for blog and art is now included in a much better place.

The new blog site will be changed and adjusted in the coming weeks. I have to find out what works best and how to make it better, but for the moment ….enjoy!

PS. I am sorry if i published some test versions and you were wrongly notified for the new blogs published.

A very special M.C. ESCHER book by the Fung Ping Shan Museum from 1994.

Schermafbeelding 2017-10-26 om 13.46.27

It was 5 years ago that i discovered an Escher title that i never had encountered before.

escher fung a

This can be explained easily, because the publications was initiated by the Fung Ping Shan museum, which is now not only a museum but also a University and Art gallery in Hong Kong. Publication by this museum are rare and it is even more exceptional to encounter one of their publications in Europe. This is one of the smaller museums in the world and i do not know how they managed to get an Escher exhibition, but i suspect it was bought from Cordon Art. Cordon Art is the sole owner of the reproduction rights of the works by M.C Escher and probably has still the largest collection of original works by the artist. It was 1994 that this book was published and what strikes me most is that the reproduction and print quality is the best that was possible in those days. The book outshines other Escher publications from that era and is possibly the best that was published on the artist in the nineties. Escher is always present in the inventory of , but this one is rare and probably a one time offer .

the M.C. Escher vase

It must have been 20 years ago that the first of the limited edition M.C. Escher oval vases was published by Cordon Art. Cordon Art are the rightful representatives and copyright holders for all the works by M.C. Escher and they decided to expand this right with several editions. Of course there was the sphere which is in high demand nowadays, but there was also the very first oval vase. The Vase was produced by Schoonhoven ceramics and came with a certificate of authenticity. A limited edition of only 450 copies and all vases signed with a signature of M.C. Escher and hand numbered on the vase itself. A beautiful object and an object worthy of the design of M.C. Escher. The vase sold out quickly and inspired Cordon Art to launch several other ceramic products. Among them a plate , a ceramic box and a newly designed vase. You can imagine that these were sold out within a year or so.

All the above products were at one time for sale at

The succes of the above products meant the edition of  another vase and this being the last one of the early vases i know of. This vase was bought and sold by me several times and now the end of my inventory is near. I only have 2 vases left of this beautiful “SKY and WATER vase”. A vase from a limited edition of 450 copies, signed with a (printed) signature, hand numbered and with certificate of Authenticity in its original box. Only this weekend the price will still be USD 495,–, after the 9th of February 2017 the vase will be USD 795,–

Interested? use the code: Vase300    and you will receive the $300.00 discount at One vase only available at this price.

A large increase in price but a necessary one, because i just learned from a colleague he had sold the same vase to the US for USD. 1000,–

Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita teached Maurits Cornelis Escher

Schermafbeelding 2016-08-31 om 09.38.31.png

Did you know that Jessurun de Mesquita was the teacher of M.C. Escher?

Escher developed his woodcutting skills under the supervision of Jessurun de Mesquita. From both sides there was a great admiration and respect for the other and Escher wrote the text on the commemorative exhibition Jessurun de Mesquita and Mendes da Costa received right after WWII in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. An exhibition curated by another “star” from the forties an fifties, Willem Sandberg. Sandberg started right after WWII with this exhibition because he wanted to show the world the great loss of these 2 great jewish artists that did not survive the war. But lets focus on the works by Jessurun de Mesquita. Technically one of the very best at that time and with subjects that stood very nearby daily life and some surrealistic / Sensivistic drawings.

Many animals were depicted because the Artis Zoo was allways nearby and a much appreciated source for all his animal drawings and woodcuts.  Nature, art deco and the best possible technique in the art of the woodcut print resulted in almost all of the cases in the best dutch art prints from that time.

Some excellent publications at and for those reading the blog and want to order the very special Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita by Wassenaar/van Es  from 1928. Use the code JESSURUNes and receive 10% discount on this title. Only 1 available and valid in september 2016.

This title from 1928 is the highlight in the book publications by Jessurun de Mesquita. It contains 2 original woodcuts on the inside and one original on the cover ( owl).

There is one other publication i can recommend and it is the monograph on Jessurun de Mesquita by the late Jonieke van Es, who wrote it and put one of the most complete catalogue Raisone’s together on any artist. This one for Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita is very special indeed.

And finally . for all readers of this blog….I have a nice set of Jessurun de Mesquita available 7 postcards for $15.00 including Worldwide shipping.

M.C. Escher….not only prints

Maurits Cornelis Escher was one of the most gifted pupils of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868-1944). His teacher died at the end of WWII in a Nazi concentration camp and was commemorated by Escher in a text which was published in a catalogue on the art of Jessurun de Mesquita and Mendes da Costa  ( 1863-1939) who had an exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam right after the war to honor them both.

This is believed to be the first printed text by Escher. The catalogue with this text is still available at

and is one of the first to be published by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam after WWII. Since, Escher has had many other publications with text and of course prints , but the text on his former teacher is special and touching. The design of the book is done by Willem Sandberg himself and all these ingredients put together in one publication makes it very special indeed. I very much like the works by Jessurun de Mesquita and admire the artist he was. His woodcuts are fabulous and when you admire the Escher prints, do not forget that perhaps his teacher Jessurun de Mesquita was even a greater artist, but unfortunately has not become as famous as his pupil. ( later this month a blog on Jessurun de Mesquita with a special offer).
